Fall oxalic acid treatment and thoughts on hive box setup for different seasons
In this video, I am doing one of my fall oxalic acid treatments. I wanted to share my method and then my thoughts and how I set my hive boxes up for the spring/summer honey supers and my fall setup.
I don't have a link to the Weller Bee Supply oxalic acid vaporizer. If I find one I will update the description. I am not sure if it's available anymore.

How Honeybees feed on capped honey frame - Methodical Madness!!
มุมมอง 220ปีที่แล้ว
I place a capped honey frame in a hive box (open feed) to see how the honey bees would approach feeding on it. I had thoughts on how they would do it. What do you think? Will they jump right in there or slowly devour the honey? Over three hours of film condensed to 40 minutes. I find it interesting how fast they can communicate with the rest of their colony and how they have different strategie...
Chaos- Honey bees feed on an extracted honey frame inside a hive box (open feed situation).
มุมมอง 686ปีที่แล้ว
I thought of making this video a year ago when I published the video when bees feed on an extracted frame inside a colonies hive box. In that video the bees cleaned the frame methodically... on the contrary, in this video, there seems to be no strategy except devouring the resources as fast as possible. Enjoy the video!! Thanks for watching!!
Water Treatment Plant doing its part to help Save the Bees!! Honey bee cutout and relocation.

The Ashland Water Treatment plant had honey bees in one of its buildings. We got a call to relocate them. This bigger business is definitely doing its part to help save the bees. This cutout took approximately 3-1/2 hours and was compressed to 35 minutes. Many companies won't take the time to have someone relocate bees. It gives you a good feeling to see this company is looking out for future g...
New and Improved Bee Hat 3000!!! Out with the old in with the new!!
มุมมอง 371ปีที่แล้ว
This is an absolutely ridiculous product infomercial skit. It resembles some of the old infomercials from the '80s and 90's. This video goes over some of the uses for the new and improved Bee Hat 3000. You can go on a bike ride, get a well rested nap, go for a night on the town or maybe take a river walk. I had a great time making this video and hopefully it brings viewers some laughs.
A swarm that reminds me how magical, creepy, and interesting honeybees are!!!
มุมมอง 13Kปีที่แล้ว
Large swarm... top two for sure that I have caught to date. Multiple queens with several video angles on this swarm catch. This was a two-hour swarm catch condensed to 24 minutes. Once the queen(s)were in the box, the remaining honey bees took to flight fast.
Confused Honeybees making me laugh
มุมมอง 500ปีที่แล้ว
In the middle of catching my second swarm for the day. I feel something on my hip... It's honeybees! They smell the previous queen that was in the cage from earlier. I found this funny because it felt like someone was massaging my hip and I couldn't figure out what was going on. Fun times in the bee yard!
Vault to Honeybees!! Using a Pole Vault Pole to Catch a Swarm??
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
Second swarm catch of the day! This swarm ended up being too high in the tree to get with just the paint pole by itself. We attached an old pole vaulting pole to get the job done!
Honey Bees devour honey off wax cappings - 3 hours condensed to 8 minutes
มุมมอง 8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I filmed Honey bees cleaning wax cappings from our recent honey harvest. Total filming was three hours and I reduced it to 8 minutes. It looked like rain coming about halfway through so I had to set up the canopy. I hope you enjoy the film!! …Please Subscribe. What it looks like when Honey bees clean extracted honey frame - Inside the hive
มุมมอง 2.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I thought it would be neat to film how the honey bees approach and clean an extracted honey frame inside the hive. The bees methodically cover every inch to completely clean the frame. I hope you enjoy the film!

Classic Honey Bee Swarm marching in the box - 2 QUEENS???

In this swarm catch, I caught the queen on the first shake of the tree branch. I decided to lay a small piece of drywall down so the viewers could get a good look at the marching of the bees into the box. There ended up being two Queens and it all worked out. Bees weren't quite sure yet about their new pollen feeder!

Bees weren't quite sure yet about their new pollen feeder!
A real frenzy isn’t it?
Why didn't they just acknowledge their windfall and carry on? Is it because it doesn't have their hives scent? They don't do that, as far as I know when keepers put on another box. I've seen them do splits with brood and capped honey in a smaller box but I don't remember anyone saying they uncapped that honey and moved it. Bet there was a pile of wax on the ground outside their entrance! Pretty cool! Of course all questions are just stuff in my brain, don't expect answers.
That was fun! Thanks
I love a time lapse. It's incredible it took only 3 hours with each one able to carry a very little. Awesome stuff!
You destroyed a tree that takes well over 20 years to grow that big for less than 2 lbs of bees?? Mmm, doesn't add up.
I never trust cells on the bottom of a frame took from the middle of a big colony and put in a smaller split!! I like to take at least one and put it between two frames! I have never had a small split swarm with multiple multuple cells! Good luck!
Love it!!
Wow, very nice! Super!
Thanks for watching!
We always appreciate all the time and effort you put into these videos!! Keep it up please!
Will Do! Thanks for watching!!
Formiga
? Ant?
Wow, very nice! I haven't mustered up the courage yet to try with no gloves but I am getting more comfortable with inspecting with no suit or smoke. Maybe one day I'll be like you and brave with no glove or suit lol
Go with what you are comfortable with! Learn the speed the bees like and they won't even notice you! (It will be like you are part of the colony and you don't even have to collect nectar 😁) Thanks for watching!!
I’ve heard if you have the entrance board on an upward slope to the entrance the Bees will walk up.
Putting it at a slope helps or you can put something down in the front so the step up isn't so big. Thanks for watching!!
I wonder why the bees don't take the wax as well.
I believe that since they can make the wax then it is probably more of a hassle to rework wax then to make new. I know when I put an extracted frame back in a hive the bees will cut/clean up the rough edges and then remove the little wax pieces from the hive. ..Maybe like... why buy more tupperware to store food when you already have tupperware at the house? Just my thoughts... Thanks for watching!!
@@durbees3859 I just remember reading that making new wax requires a lot of honey to fuel it.
Amazing, never get old.
Thanks for watching!!
Would love to see when you empty the vacuum into the box and the bees all start fanning!! Thanks for sharing!
I will record that on the next cutout or swarm catch that I need to use the vac. Thanks for the feedback! If you would like to see something else let me know so I can get some ideas on what viewers want to see. I would appreciate it! Thanks for watching!!
Nice cutout. Did you confirm that the queen was in the vacuum?
I haven't checked yet. On cutouts, I usually give the bees a week or so to get adjusted and get a good amount of wax and propolis on the frames. I have all the cutout comb held in the frames with rubber bands and it won't be stable for a week or 2. I can check in a few days and If I see eggs then I know she is in there and I won't look any further to disturb them. If no eggs then I will look further for the queen or queen cells. On my first few cutouts if I didn't physically catch the queen then I would keep going in and looking for her. I had a rubber band break on one of the frames and the comb dropped. After that, I don't rush anything and give them enough time to secure everything. I did go back to the water plant a few days later and vacuumed the last remaining forager bees that made their way back and clustered. The queen was definitely not in that small cluster. After the second trip, there were less than a dozen older forager bees still hanging around. Thanks for watching!!
What are you spraying on the empty frames before installing them?
I spray sugar syrup on the frames. It gets the bees on the frames and gets them drawing comb out a little faster. I learned that a few years ago from a guy I worked with.
what kind of camera equipment do you need to take this video? this kind of video is a great learning tool
I use a GoPro the only problem with it is that it overheats sometimes inside the hives. If I remember correctly I had to record this video 2x because the first time the camera shut off. Thank you for watching!!
LMAO love it
Thanks for watching!!
So crazy how it went from a few scattered bees to all the hives foragers that were in the area all on the table!
Yeah, it's amazing how well they communicate! Thanks for watching!!
Get a tripod, I got dizzy sick in the first minute
I will keep that in mind! Thanks for watching!
looks clean enough to melt!
How do they not get stuck and unable to fly? Honey is obviously extremely sticky
Usually... if you put the cappings/Honey on a surface that is flat and doesn't have edges to contain the honey then the bees will work from edges toward the middle (keeping their feet out of the honey and not getting stuck in it) or they land on the high spots of cappings which aren't that sticky. If you put the cappings in a tub that confines the honey like a pool then the bees try to go to the edge but can't really get to the edge without falling in. That situation is more like quicksand to the bees. (If I feed bees in a tub or bowl I will put straw or wood shavings on top of the cappings so the bees can at least climb out. This explanation is just my observations over the years. Thank you for watching my video!!
Are your frames homemade?
I get almost all my frames from the Amish.
@@durbees3859 interesting

No stings?!?!
Not on that particular swarm catch. I move slow enough that the bees don't mind me most times. Thanks for watching!!

You definitely don't have to call them twice for dinner. Must be as good as grandma's cooking lol.
You got that right!! 🤣🤣
I wondered what you was doing at the start with that pole. haha Nothing beats a live swarm arriving or bees marching that have been rescued. Not even harvesting honey. They kind of know when you are rescuing them. Great video! If you upload that bit that was speeded up it would make a nice relaxing video. Its theraputic watching a march. I have seen hundreds over the years in real life and still never get bored.
I agree completely... bees are therapeutic! Whether you are watching a march or standing in the middle of a swarm or even just a hive inspection... They are dangerous and yet peaceful. Working with honeybees has been the most calming thing I have ever done!! Thanks for your comment and Thanks for watching!!
I enjoy this kind of video.
Thank You for watching!!
well I do understand that if they fan their butts that's a great indicator that she with them.
Hi, used to do removals and would open feed the honey under a truck topper that was on stands. Worked great.
I bet it did!! Good idea! Thanks for watching!
If you go to the hive will you get twice eaten honey??
Honeybees have more than one stomach like a cow. They move honey around in a hive passing it mouth to mouth. It gets "eaten" just once.
@@mikeries8549 sorry I thought that honey process by a bee then taken out and processed a second time by a different bee was really good honey.
It all depends on how you look at it!😄 Any which way you look at it (collected, consumed, or eaten) the nectar/honey is passed from bee to bee until processed into honey then dried and finally stored/capped (in this case stored again🤣)
@@birther1968 I bet it is! But I think most honey is really good honey 🤣🤣. Thank You for watching!!
All honey has been "eaten" by multiple bees. That's a part of how the bees concentrate watery nectar into honey.
Your careful and patient handling of the bees was impressive. The bees evidently like you. Thank you. 😊
It took me a while to find the speed ( 🐢) so that the bees don't notice that I am there! They are wonderful creatures! 😄Thank you for watching!!
I enjoy this kind of thing...
I do as well! Thanks for watching!
2:32 Lois Griffin in the background. Also I bet you got stung a few times. This legit looks dumb and probably is using no gloves etc
🤣I rarely get stung. When I use gloves I end up smashing bees and then I do get stung. ...So no gloves equals bees stay alive and I don't get stung. 😃Thanks for watching!
Thank you. I love watching bees so bee stuff.
Thank You for watching!!
MAN, EVERYTIME I THINK YOU'RE DONE, ANOTHER BAG OF BEES, WITH ALL THOSE BEES FIT IN THAT BOX
I had the 2 original boxes used in the video then 2 weeks after the capture I had to add a third box.
Hello from Kajun Homestead, I'm Brad just found your channel. 👍
Hello! Thanks for watching!
Very nice love how gentle you are with them
Thank you! It took me a while to learn the speed that they are ok with... they let me know one way or another if they don't like what I am doing... 🤣
Thanks for sharing. Great job 👍
Thank You!
Great video! No annoying musak or boring chatter.
Thank You!
I'm not a bee keeper but I love to watch the videos. So, is each bee able to tell which box it's hive is in?
Yes, the bees know which hive is theirs by location and scent. They use location once it's established but they mainly go by scent when they swarm or if something happens to the hive. It's like a club card, LOL
I turned away then looked back at the screen and was like "WOW" there's more? I kept saying all of them were not going to be able to fit in there.
🤣That's what I was thinking as well!!
Great idea!
Thank you!
That was a monster swarm. Thanks for sharing.
That was creepy but cool. Thx for sharing!

👍🐝THANK YOU FOR THIS!! I love watching how you are with them, THE BEE WHISPERER.
Thanks for watching!!
That was crazy. And for the sub title that said the guy in the back needs a haircut he just needs a buzz cut
🤣😆
With multiple queens I would split them over as many boxes as the number of caught queens.
Good thought I will do that sometimes... but I usually go with whatever is going on in the bee yard... If I have a couple big hives that need split or perhaps a few queenless hives I may use them there as well. Thanks for watching!!
