Will we ever see refreshed DR650 in action? :)
Thanks for watching; Perhaps...
Great video mate.. Enjoyed watching the breakdown First time to see that neat clutch basket removal tool ! You definitely have mechanical experience how you treat those bolts/screws etc..i recently did my dr250..it did not go as smoothly as this
Trust me, neither did mine; it's all in the editing ;)
dr 800 video??
Thanks for watching and unfortunately not
What you want to bet it’s harder than he makes it look?
;)
Really good video, engine seems to be in good shape inside, not sure why rebuild was necessary.
Thanks for watching; I was adding a NOVA gearbox
Boo hoo, sounds like a hater. It's hard to believe you have 30 years of experience with a response like that one. Time stamp 38:24 - read the comment ;). As for the valve stems, there was no carbon buildup where I measured the thickness; the dial indicator was measuring the surface runout. To get an accurate reading, the magnetic base had to be on a metal surface. Tell me, with your 30 years of experience, is marble magnetic... ha ha, Feliz Navidad Gringo ;)
nice video , wahts the name or brand form the Metal screwdriver ?
Thanks for watching! It's a generic impact screwdriver from amazon.
Thanks for watching, i'm glad you enjoyed it.

This will be my background tv for the next year or so now. Thankyou for uploading, very satisfying and informative

Do you have a list of the special tools I’ll need?
No special tools needed for the re-assembly apart from a clutch basket holder. For the disassembly you'll need a crankcase splitter tool and a fly wheel puller along with the clutch basket holding tool. You'll also need a ring nut socket for the crankshaft if you plan on replacing the bearing on the ring nut side. Don't attempt rebuilding the engine without JIS (japanese industrial standard) screw end bits and an impact screwdriver. Apart from that you'll be able to rebuild the engine with regular sockets, allen keys, wrenches etc. A breaker bar will save you some time and a good set of torque wrenches are essential. You'll need additional special tools to measure engine components.
Thanks for the video man! Ur the best
Thanks for watching!
Mate thank you so much for this. I'm about to buy a dr650 with 50k km on it and figured I'd be up for this soon. How much did you spend on this rebuild mate?
Thank you for watching. 50k kms or miles? The only reason I rebuilt the engine was to install the NOVA gearbox. The rebuild cost me roughly a grand euro. That's new springs, washers, seals, bushings, bearings, gaskets, OEM piston and rings. That grand isn't taking into consideration the cost for tools and the NOVA Gearbox. All in all, if you buy well and you don't change the gearbox you're looking at 1K euro for the rebuild.
@@docteurmoteur Its 50k km! The engine sounds ok and no noticeable ticking when starting. Just thinking I'll be up for a rebuild soon and came across this researching it! Thanks for the breakdown mate! Really much appreciated on that!
@@OddClancy You're OK for another 50 k kms. With that being said, it can't hurt to open the engine up and check inside. Especially the transmission; my gears had noticeable pitting. It could be a fun winter project. I can answer your questions if you have additional ones.
@@docteurmoteur Incredible I can still take this one for another 50k Ks Id love to do it over winter and get in there and tinker with it. Great idea! I'm just worried in buying into a tired engine when compared to something with 20k KMs. It's got all the bells and whistles and extras that an adventure bike needs. just that hanging over the sale. Ever considered a bigger bore kit as well? Appreciate the replies once again.
@@OddClancy Some drs will see over 100k kms some won't. A big bore kit was on my list after this rebuild but i've decided to sell my dr.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for being there from the start!
Great video love it!
Thanks for watching!
Outstanding video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
Thanks for watching !
Quick question- are you removing both sides of the plastic bearing shields or just one? Awesome video by the way, I’m sure I will watch it 1,000 times or more when it comes time to rebuild my DR.😂 Also, are you cleaning out the grease they come packed with?
Haha, thanks for watching. Remove one seal only. For the grease, it's hard to remove all of it. I don't bother changing it as engine oil will flush it away, however you can decide to wipe the accessible grease off the surface of the bearing and adding some bearing specific grease. Use heat and cold when installing the bearings. Bearings in the freezer one hour before installation, and heat the bearing hole a good minute before dropping it in. Make sure to drop them in flush, especially the OEM bearing with the pin.
Thank you so much for the reply! I will be sure to take your advice on that. Subscribed.
Sooths the soul. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
This video is a masterpiece 👌
Thanks for watching haha !
👍👍👍👍👍
I've been looking forward this video for weeks! Just about to start it now...loving the first 2 mins already 🙂 Just finished watching it. This is such a beautifully put together video...informative, relaxing, ... I could watch this style of video all day long! Well done!
Haha appreciate it and thanks for watching! Thinking about rebuilding the Yamaha r6 engine to my track bike next, any recommendations ?
@@docteurmoteur I've got a 1996 DR650SE myself as well as a '07 GSXR 750 for track days so quite a similar set of bikes to you. My DR650 is currently in bits having the frame re-powder coated. I've watched all your videos so far and I must admit that the things i keep wondering about that would be great to know are: a. What happened to his DR650 engine that required it to be rebuilt? b. Will he be rebuilding/restoring the rest of his DR650? e.g. Carb, frame, suspension, building new wheels, etc c. Who is this guy and what is the rest of his channel going to be about? Love the idea of seeing you do other engines but equally it would be great to see more on your DR650 if they are of the quality you've been doing so far... 🙂
@@OVB_NL Gsxr 750 is one sweet ride😉 My dr650 is an 01’ model; the carb and air box are stock and I don’t plan on “upgrading” that aspect of things. I have custom TFX suspension (front & rear). I’m tearing down the engine to install a NOVA gearbox. As to what’s next on the channel; I’ll only be rebuilding engines. Mainly super sport engines; think Yamaha r6 or r1. However, you guys will also see a fair shareI of smaller CC 4 stroke and 2 stroke dirt bike engines.
@@julianariel3212 Haha, I hope you're talking about the new and updated workshop manual and not the "old one" - if you were to follow the old one, you would make some costly mistakes, like incorrect head bolt installation or you would pull your hair out trying to get the engine out the wrong side of the frame - but see, i don't know ANYTHING, so i guess you should follow the original manual and see how that works out for you... ;)
Excellent! ❤
Cheers mate!
You’re a legend for this
Appreciate the comment! Part four is up this weekend.
Part 4 is up this weekend!
just as i was thinking of getting long throw gears, looked for a good video like this a while back and didnt have anything ! i know it would be a lot of work but if you could put the torque specs when putting it back together that would be so so useful ! also if you had links to the tool sused like an amazon afli link in the desciptio i would definetly use it and so would others !
Thanks for the comment, i'll make sure to link torque specs, tools and part refs. I'll look into affiliation links for the next engine! The assembly video is out next week.
@@docteurmoteur thank you so so much this information and videos you have here are invaluable !
@@gavinearls2935 Keep an eye out for part four this weekend. Torque specs, tightening sequences and refs will be linked.
Awesome!!
Thanks for watching!
At 26:54 there appears to be some discoloration from excessive heating on the crank shaft where it connects to the piston connecting rod. Is this the case and has it ever been an issue? Awesome video btw, I was almost tempted to have to go give my DR a rip just from watching this... Too bad it's too cold today where I live 😂 subbed
Not an issue for the bluing; most likely heat dating back to factory assembly. I'm uploading part 4 the assembly next week if i can get to it. I'll have all the part ref linked as well. Thanks for the sub!
Parcero para cuando la otra parte pues
A steam cleaner would make the cleaning process a lot faster.
A sand blaster is on my list!

Love the video series, man. In true Dexter fashion with the plastic wrap at the end :) :) :)
I had 88 thousand miles, on my 2003 and she was starting to smoke. Put new rings in last winter and found some single track, runs just as good as when she was new.
wow! 88k?!?! So mine has close to 20k, and it's started to smoke from exhaust on cold start. Was yours doing the same?
@@gsabella4 Yes, at first but later on she started smoking during hard throttle. New rings and she runs great no smoke now.
Thank you for posting these. I have an 09 with a noisy 3rd gear and am seriously considering a nova gear set install.
The assembly will be posted in the next week or so. Had some delays with parts.
When you removed the oil screen I saw lots of chunks in there, were any of the transmission gear circlips broken or was that all gear tooth facing that had flaked off?
The transmission was OK. I'm not sure where they came from, the crank had some pitting.
I had a closer look at the transmission and there was noticeable pitting on the gears.
Parcero pa cuanto el otro capítulo pues
Can you list your tools used for checked SPECS on engine v blocks ect and links to buy got a DR650 needing refreshing as well.

Installing the nova set for precaution. Rather not leave it to chance ;)

Brought up in the RD(RZ) era, will have NIGHTMARES about that tailpipe tonight. 😂.
I use a copper wire wheel and gas on the outside of the cases works great and takes about 10-20 min to do the entire Engine Casing :)
Good shoot, I’ll give it a shot next time!
