We are beekeepers and beefarmers. We want to show you all the ins and outs of beekeeping which you probably do not see, such as the amount of travelling to different farms and the handling live stock at those farms. We do not talk much so enjoy following our experiences with us together.
Moving hives to a better apiary with a little disaster along the way!
Join me today as I attempt to move a couple of hives to a better apiary which has a great honey flow. Learn how I fix a little disaster and not lose any bees in the process.

Rebuilding the apiary with 4 new VSH Queens after my worst winter of beekeeping (edited)
มุมมอง 963 หลายเดือนก่อน
After losing approximately 70% of my hives this winter, I am using fresh VSH Queen genetics from Black Mountain Honey to restart from scratch. Today I am introducing my first 4 mated Queens to the doner hives and will open them in a future video. Thanks for watching. #honeybees #beefarming #beekeeping #amsr #14x12national #bees #countryside #nature #honey #varoa

Worst feeling: removing my dead beehives from the apiary
มุมมอง 3435 หลายเดือนก่อน
Heartbreaking week, I remove the last of the dead hives from the apiary and perform initial investigation for cause of hive loss. This apiary had 10 large hives last Spring and Summer, and now are all dead. I have a lot of lessons to learn this year. #honeybees #beefarming #beekeeping #amsr #14x12national #bees #countryside #nature #honey #varoa
Worst winter hive loss since I began beekeeping
มุมมอง 3.3K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Following a couple of warmer days, inspected the hives to see which ones didn't make it and which ones need additional food. In total I have lost 75% of the hives in these apiaries :-( #honeybees #beefarming #amsr #beekeeping

They don't make sticky tape like they used to!
Thanks for sharing
Very neat and tidy, professionally cared for leads to happy bees. Archie will make an excellent beekeeper just like his dad. (Telling his dad process already) 😅😅😅🎉🎉🐝🐝
Gentle bees :-)
Don't get stung 😊
All the walking must keep you fit. I didn't realise there is so much involved in taking care of the bees, you must also have the knowledge to be able to do it.
Yes, thanks
Gentle bees ❤
I'm glad they did not sting you 🙂
Thanks for saving the bee.❤
Thanks so much for posting and look forward to the updates. At the moment I only have two fairly big colonies, so will try to do a couple of splits in a month or so (if I don't, they will swarm!). Both my queens are daughters of one of Laurence's BMH Buckfast's, they seem very calm. Cheers
Thank you, I'm going to try 10 BMH & 15 Jolanta Queens this year & will keep you all updated :-)
Why can't you speak in your videos , would be far more interesting ... nothing worse than having to read your findings..
@chrislister6161 I would but my voice would be far worse. Too many youtubers destroy their education videos by talking all over them instead of allowing the viewer to live through the experience.
Reading the other comments and your replies I conclude that most of your deadouts had queens older than 2 years and were probably daughters from your existing stock, that you didn't treat for varroa in the autumn (not seeing any mite drop doesn't mean there is no varroa in the hive, it probably is in the capped brood) and if it was a cold winter I think you need insulation round the brood box rather than just on the top. I think you are on the right track in replacing the old queens with new stock. This gives you new genetics with hopefully all the right traits. It pays huge dividands to test properly for varroa (sugar shake or alcohol wash) .in spring and autumn and treat accordingly. Do all that and you're giving your bees their best chance of getting through the winter. Good luck from a Kiwi beek.
Hi mate, thank you this is exactly what I am doing this year. VSH Queens are expensive but not as expensive as losing an entire hive to varroa.
Blocking some wind helps also. So sorry.
Does this mean all you 2+ year old queens had low or no survival rate?
Yes I'm afraid so, all were from queen cells or swarm cells so this year I'm bringing in fresh new Queens from Scotland to help restore my hives.
Varoa mite and the space you left bees with 2 hives is too much.
They were huge colonies last Autumn but the entire apiary was poisoned by accident last year :-(
Thanks for posting. I expect you will be able to use quite a few if those frames again. Look forward to seeing you do a few splits. Here in the south of the UK its normally in May that colonies really speed up and swarms occur (or not if the beekeepers keeps on top of things!)😊
We broke our golden rule not having more than 6 hives in an apiary, as we can inspect in an hour and if something happens we do not lose too many hives, but you are right about the splits I have a large order with Black Mountain Honey for April, going to give their VSH bees a go :-) Thanks for watching.
@@GrandadsAllotment All mine are descendants from a single mated Buckfast bought from Laurence a few years back, so you should do well with them.
You have to do alcohol wash a mite drop does not tell the story.Sorry for the loss of you BEES
I've a screen under the hive with sticky paper but I'll try a bee wash this year for sure.
I always intended to wash with powered sugar, it should work just as good?
Thanks so much for posting, i know its akways sad to lose colonies, but your remaining third look great, so no doubt you will be doing lots of splits. I have lost 2 out if 6. Do you think that you may have had some poorly mated queens, kr even late supersedures, again poorly mated, hence very few winter bees to keep colonies going? Please keep us updated as always good to see splits being done and queens added.
Well they were not young queens which were not superseded, maybe it's time to replace every 3 years with new queens. Thank you for watching.
Something is wrong with the volume on my computer, and I couldn't hear what you were saying. Otherwise, I would have offered opinions.
I'm afraid I cannot talk on my videos, but thank you for watching.
@@GrandadsAllotment Maybe you could use text or AI text to voice.
Well did you find out why so many died . Was there food in the super ??. What was your last mite numbers ??. We’re they queenless ??. Did some farmer spray there fields ??. What was the reason they died ??????.
One apiary with 10 large hives died in early Winter due to poisoning, but these other apiaries are not near fields which are treated so it's a head scratcher. They had plenty to eat & zero mite drop in November.
Poisoning? We're there mounds of dead bees in front of hive? Did you report it?
So sorry to see this. Did you treat for mites last fall?
We only treat when needed. For 2 years running, we have had a near zero mite drop.
Keep your good work! I know what you feel 😢 I also lost some bees this winter, to be honest 50%. th-cam.com/video/BSis9cyZF3E/w-d-xo.html The hive at 33:00, I think it’s queen-less, look how the bees raise up their abdomens 🙁
We will go again this year with new queens, fingers crossed.
@@GrandadsAllotment I plan to buy a breeder and make some of my own this year. Fingers crossed for both of us! Best regards!
It's a terrible shame. Perhaps to cold this winter, l don't know. I'm so sorry.
We will go again this year with new queens, fingers crossed.
Not this year. Swarm might have brought in mote load.
