SIFTING Worm Castings + SHREDDING Bedding |10 Gallon Red Wiggler Worm Bin Fed | Vermicomposting
Horizontal migration begun in this 10 gallon red wiggler worm bin quite awhile ago. I have sifted some castings a few times out of this bin since then. Today we sift out a good majority of what is left. We also shred some fresh bedding to add to this bin. And this worm bin receives a sweet feeding. A much deserved one, if I must say.

Miss you too ❤️
Free food I think I may have to start an enc bin
Thanks I am using just carboard and paper so give me an idea how to work my bin I am going to try and sift as it is used on each side
Mis you ❤

Great video. I am curious if you ever figured out how to rid your bin of the springtails. I would really appreciate hearing how you did get rid of them, or if they just died off after a bit. if they did die off how long did it take, Happy worm farming.
Hello there, thank you for watching mu video. Honestly after awhile I just stopped fighting with them and let them be. They did go away after about 4-6 months or so.
Looking Great !!
Thank you 😊
What do you use for grit? Thanks
Eggshells, oats, bird feed, whole wheat flour 🙂
Hi Dee, one of your videos popped up on my suggested videos list, so I stopped in to make sure I didn't miss anything. I hope you are doing well! We have been busy as well with a new granddaughter who turns one tomorrow (wow), garden, renovations, etc. I hope to see one of your videos again soon! ~ Sandra
Hello hello, all is well, thank you for caring and thinking of me. Congratulations and happy belated birthday to your granddaughter 🎉 best wishes ❤️
There’s a worm on top of the paper layering cover, under the plastic bag! Will she be able to get down through the paper to the food and bedding?
Yes, the worms can munch its way through the paper and get back down. The worms like to gather in between there because of the moisture that sits in between the paper and plastic bag.
Love when people show stuff like this.. instead of the beautifully balanced, pristine and clean bins!! I found one mushroom in my bin today and panicked 🤣 so seeing a whole bin full of them calms my nerves a bit and made me realize - it happens! It’s my first bin and fairly new. Thanks for posting! ♥️
Thank you so much ❤️ greatly appreciate it. Nothing is always perfect. And it's good to see how it truly is. Thank you for watching 👀 Congratulations on your first bin 👏

Enjoyed your video. Thank you.
Thank you for watching !
How exciting! I just received my first ever European Nightcrawlers last Wednesday. I added more soil because they seem to like a deeper bed. I am feeding whole wheat flour, grinded oatmeal and corn meal, I will give them eggshells. I understand that the acidity of the coffee may bother them, so I just added a little bit.
That's awesome 👌 congratulations and welcome home new wormies 🪱
Are you ever concerned about chlorinated water? I’ve been filling containers & letting them sit overnight because our city water is chlorinated. I’m also using outdoor faucets because we have a water softener. Am I being to concerned about this?
Honestly I have always used faucet water and have never let it sit. I know others let it sit for a few days or use rain water. I have yet to encounter any issues. I guess it's just personal preference on what you think is best 🙂
Did you have any dead, dried out worms in the dry area or did they all make it to the bait cup area
Nope, I did not. I tried not to let it dry out too much. If I saw that it was getting a tad dry, I would moisten it.
With regards to critters introduced from outside, in woodchips, leaves etc, a tip from Captain Matt's Worms website; he microwaves that stuff for 2-3 mins to execute anybody along for the ride.
Great advice ! Thank you !
Do you think this accelerates the worm breeding or just concentrates your existing population into one area?
I'd say it does both 🤗🙂
👍🌹
🤗❤️

@@hossamhassan1310 you are so kind. Thank you !
I've watch a lot of videos with the various migration methods, but it just seems like it takes forever, and you have to plan it so far in advance. Even weeks later, it looks to me like there are still a fair number of worms in the castings. I am starting to be okay with the manual method, like Worm Ohana uses. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The "Ohana" method probably takes more total work hours spent physically handling the contents of the worm bin, but a lot less calendar time from start to finish. You can decide you want to harvest the castings from a bin, even if there is still a lot of bedding in it, and do it in an afternoon the same day you decide you want to do it. But that afternoon, you will be doing nothing but separating worms and bedding from castings.
To each their own. Everyone has they're own method that they prefer. I like the migration method because it's less hands on and sometimes I do not have 3-4 hours at once to complete it. I'm fine with 10-15 minutes at a time over let's say a month. Not so overwhelming.
@@deewormsvermicomposting Yes, I can see that advantage!
Where are you? I miss your videos
I'm still here !! Just been a busy summer and time has been flying like crazy ! Also, my oldest starts kindergarten soon, so we have been enjoying and preparing him for that. Everytime I plan on filming something always seems to change my plan. I really hope to get a video out soon !!! Thank you so much for asking !! ❤️
@@deewormsvermicomposting I am glad that everything is ok.
You have such a robust density of healthy worms! Lots of variety in ages and sizes. Maybe they moved away from the feeding zone because they finished most of the goodies? ~ Sandra
That's a good reason !! Perhaps 🙂
I think there was just too much yummy stuff in there still to get out.
Hope everything is ok! Haven’t seen any videos in a while. I must say I do miss them. Have a great day!
All is well, thank you sooo much for asking. It's been quite a busy summer. Lots of outside work and garden fun with the kids. I've been only doing quick feedings for my worm bins for the past few months and haven't filmed in awhile. I really hope to film and post a video soon! Hope all is well with you and have a wonderful day 🤗
Mushrooms grow from mycelium and the Mushrooms are just the fruits of the mycelium it will be hard to remove it
I can give you an update on that. I no longer have mushrooms growing in any of my ENC bins. Looks like keeping the bins uncovered really helped bring down the humidity and moisture and stopped their process.
I thought they dont like acidic. Onions etc anything spicy. So pineapples are okay?
Pineapple leaves are definitely ok. And small quanities are ok, but not a worm bin favorite. But the top portion they love to mingle in between the leaves.
I am super behind on videos. Hope all is well with you and your family.
I'm behind as well, just been giving my worm bins quick feedings without filming or thoroughly checking. We've been out of town as well for a bit. Hopefully soon I'll be able to film an update. Time has been flying. Hope all is well with you and your family 🤗
I've been binge watching your channel, looooove your videos. I keep trying to go at least a week before checking on my worms but fail every time!!!! 😆
Thank you soooo much. I'm hoping to put out a new video this week. It's been quite awhile since I've posted something new. But it's just been crazy busy for us. And my worm bins have been getting quick and fast feedings. Hopefully though this week I'll be able to show some love to a lucky bin 😁
@@deewormsvermicomposting looking forward to it!!
Too low volume
It's an older video, when I first began posting videos on TH-cam. I've improved that and volume now is up to par. Thank you for watching.
My bin is coconut coir as well. It's about three months old now. My red wiggler's don't look nearly as fat as yours. I wonder why. I feed them about once a week with peels very similar to yours.
Do you use anything for grit? Also, ground up oats and cornmeal helps them getting a tad bigger. But red wigglers aren't meant to get big. It might be the supplier as well.
@@deewormsvermicomposting I use ground up eggshells and coffee grounds. I put in some oats this last feeding. I purchased worms from Uncle Jim's. As I mentioned, my bin is going on 3 months. When do you think I'll see some cocoons? Gotta say I'm having hard time differentiating between the coir and the castings. Thanks for replying!!
@@romanticwarrior97 you should have many cocoons by now. They just might be a tad hard to see or find. Coco coir is more brown and stringy, while castings are more fine and darker almost black. Hence why everyone refers to it as black gold. Sifting helps with that too 🙂
@@deewormsvermicomposting Thanks for your help!
I have the same Problem. Are these mushrooms poisonous ?
I have a plastic covered container that I poked holes into it for the air. The mushroom grows from underneath the lid and peeks out of the plastic container be careful.
I don't think so. They didn't hurt my worms. Try to leave the lid off. You might have a little too much moisture in your bins making them grow even more.
@@deewormsvermicomposting Every time I open my lid for feeding I find my wigglers crawling all the way to the cover lid upside down waiting for the lid to open the mushroom growing out of lid and the worms trying to escape 🙄
@@miguelboricuapatientlongsu1855 that's due to moisture collecting on the lid as it rises it hits the lid and collects there.
@@deewormsvermicomposting I made more than 5 Holes on the lid. The mushroom grew underneath the lid super shroon .
I found one of those white mushrooms growing in my bin and I don't know what type it is 🤔
I'm not sure of the type top. But I just broke them down and mixed them within the material. Wiped the sides of the bin down. And they disappeared eventually.
@@deewormsvermicomposting The first time I saw them was 6 months ago it made me jump at the sight of them 🤦🏽
I have looked into the mushroom types and I found you there's some mushrooms that release spores into the air and inhaling the spores is not medically nice .
What a blessing finding your channel has been for me this morning. I hope you have a blessed day :) ~Kelly
Thank you so much!! Blessings and hope all is well ! See you soon 🤗
Could you explain the importance of the grit? Thank you! ~Kelly
Grit helps the worms digest their food because worms have a gizzard, the same as chickens.
Ah ok, I see how your cycle works now. Thank you for taking the time to share with us. Your videos have helped me very much this morning! ~Kelly
It's great to hear that 😊 thank you !!
I've learned more from you in 2 videos than I learned in the 4 hours of videos I watched yesterday. Seriously! I've seen holes in the bottoms of bins and around the tops of the bins and the lids on other's systems...I noticed you don't have holes. Is there a reason why they do or you don't? Thank you! ~Kelly
Some believe that lechate ( the fluid that leaks out of the worm bin) is good for their plants, when in reality it's not. It's just rotten food excess that is no good for any plant or garden. OR they are afraid of their worm bin getting too wet and having excess moisture. I personally do not need or want any holes because some bedding would fall out, which would drive me crazy and also if your proportions of browns and food scraps are correct and well balanced there shouldn't be any excess of fluids in a worm bin. Thank you so much for your kind words 😊
Oh wow, toilet paper rolls! I didn't even think about that! Mine are cardboard but they are white...would those be ok? Or are they bleached and would hurt my ecosystem? I just started researching this yesterday, so this is likely a rookie question, but...you don't ever add more layers like in the beginning, correct? You just add (and bury) your browns and foods and THAT is what makes more "soil", is that right? Subbed! Ty! ~Kelly
I would rip out a small piece of the white cardboard and test it out. I've never encountered white toilet paper tubes. 🧻 As for the layers, they are added at the start of a new worm bin and then I add little by little burying everything under the current material already in the bin.
I just shared one of your videos on my Facebook garden homepage. I’m telling everyone you’re only 51 subscribers away from hitting your 1000☺️❤️
You are too kind ❤️❤️❤️ very much appreciated 🤗 THANK YOU !!!
How come you don't use coconut coir . I think it's better than clomped up paper my reds love it good work!
Just too save money and plenty of paper bedding material at home that I can use up in the worm bins.
