Burdens Are Lifted At Calvary
"Burdens Are Lifted At Calvary" was written by John M. Moore. This is perhaps the best known hymn of approximately 150 hymns written by Dr. Moore. He was a pastor and evangelist in both Scotland and North America. In later years he was pastor of Willowdale Baptist Church in Toronto, Ontario.

Popularized by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham Crusades, "How Great Thou Art" has become, along with "Amazing Grace", one of the most well-known and beloved hymns in the world. It's also interesting to note that the first time it was sung at a Billy Graham service was in Toronto, Canada in 1955.

In the mid 1800's the author of this hymn, Charles Fry, with his family travelled around England as "The Musical Frys". He later became associated with William Booth, the founder of The Salvation Army. It is said that Mr. Fry was the very first bandmaster of the Salvation army!

This hymn's lovely musical score was written by George Nelson Allen (1812-1877). Allen was not only a musician but was professor of Geology at Oberlin College in Ohio. The lyrics can be traced back as early as 1693.

New York author and poet Elizabeth Prentiss wrote these heart-felt lyrics, and the beautifully fitting music was composed by William H. Doane. Doane was a Cincinnati businessman who wrote music as an avocation. He often collaborated with Fanny Crosby on many of her poems, creating some of the world's best-loved hymns.
