PC gaming should be fun, not expensive.
We're focusing on older hardware that is still usable today. A lot of PC users don't go for the latest and the greatest, and this makes older hardware quite common. Despite that, there is not a lot of coverage of older components; this channel aims to help with that.

could try strapping some 92 or 120mm case fans to the gigabyte cooler to resolve things. this is a cheap and effective method to boost GPU cooling, although bulky and kinda ugly, not to mention you usually have to use a constant DC input or a motherboard fan header rather than the GPU's fan controller (if it has one).
@@chazbotic That would work, sure. The point of the video though was that even some fanless designs rely on a fan being somewhere in the case, to force some air flow. In a PC with no forced air flow, this video card would cook. The 'Silent Cell' cooling system will not work in a fanless PC.
@@oldertechtoday i wonder if anyone has ever tried making an entire side panel of a PC as a passive cooler... surely by sheer mass and surface area it might work at some point...
I approve of your naming scheme for those 2 cards, haha. I come to your channel for the tech but I love your comments and if something happens to the batmobil, just replace the heatsink and connect the fan to a system fan header as this a much better solution than this passive cooler. Also talking about jury rigged stuff, the fan died on my hd 5670 and it was overheating, as the only thing spare that I had was an intel cooler, I removed the original fan and left the intel one which was fixed with cable ties, but it worked. Anyway, keep up the good work, looking forward for the next video, man! :)
@@gaming.teacher Thanks for the comment. Yeah, the 5670 can be fairly easy to cool. Heck, a lot of my 1GB cards use something that's almost identical to an Intel stock cooler.
Hi, i have 2 of these, a powercolour with a big fan & an amd with a blower. I have to admit i really like the look of your card, thanks for showing it
@@MJ-mk8jg Thanks. I had an MSI variant first, with one large fan. Then I got the ATI variant, with the blower style cooler. Then I got the Batmobile (the Gigabyte card) followed by the Silent Cell variant shown in this video. Both MSI and the reference card have new owners now, I kept only the two Gigabyte variants.
Is this chip same as the one on the 5770?
@@CharcharoExplorer yes. The 6770 used the exact same Juniper GPU as the 5770. The 6770 was just a rebrand.
At first I was surprised when you used green colour as text background than I realized why :P Anyway a lovely video as always, too bad you had to underclock it in Fortnite.
Thanks for the comment. That 50 MHz underclock doesn't amount to much - less than 5%. I'm not too worried about the performance loss, but rather more curious as to why. Why does the card behave like that.
@@oldertechtoday It sounds like the core has some issues and can't handle "high" frequencies?! I am no expert but it could be that some control unit is failing, maybe it's clock is not snyched with the others?!
i had palit jetstream gtx 760 every time you rewiew new graphics cards i had same verzion back then
@@mhpross1234 That's a cool coincidence, we must have similar markets.
Can you use it on windows 11?
@@maldto8564 Yes; just use the drivers for windows 10, they will work on 11.
such a good card when it was new although my 780 Ti ran much warmer than i would like, made me get better case cooling for the 1st time with a mesh airflow style case. i later got a 780 Ti that was really really powerful but it hit a "wall" in some titles where i eventually bought a 980 Ti because even now the 780 Ti can crush games before DX12, but has a terrible stop in later ones. very sad there's no fixing that besides heavy driver optimizations that probably will never come.
Unfortunately, yes. Kepler is now in legacy driver support. Even so, I'm still keeping my eyes out for a 780 or 780 ti.
Hypethreading is helpfull, I did comapre a 2C2T with a 2C4T CPU and the performance difference was like night and day, like you said, it was is not doubled, but it helped greatly, especially with "frame times" on windows and games.
I have the exact same model :D but only tested one game on it.
... Company of Heroes? I wanted to switch the cooler for another one, that looked compatible, and had a shroud. Problem is is I would need to machine off some of it to make room for some capacitors, and I don't have the tools for that. Didn't give up on the plan, but it will require some ... adaptations.
@@oldertechtoday No, it was Isonzo, I also tested it on the HD 7770. Oh, yeah, clearance issues. You could try to drill out the part where the capacitors are, so there is no need for a milling machine yet it depends on the cooler at question. If you need any help with it, like discussing on how to do it, let me know, I would like to be helpful. :)
Finally I came across these videos. I had an i5-4690 that is now running my parent's PC after almost 10 years. Also back than people said that an i3 is good enough for games, an i5 is for anything else and the i7 is an overkill, but I guess that was being said by broke students :P
Thanks for your time. There should be some more recent versions of these, in case the 2022 tests did not include the game you were interested in.
Does this card have feature level 12?
@@irfanj It does ... Check the techpowrerup page, there should be a link on the description.
One of the key advantages of GCN 2, is the fact that the 7790/260x supported VOLKAN version 1.1, which is really nice to have as an extra :)
GCN 2 defintely had better feature level support than others from the same time period. Kepler (NVidia) was just feature level 11_0; GCN 1 (AMD) was 11_1, and GCN 2 is 12_0, at least according to techpowerup.
It smells of HD7870/R9 270X/R9 270 and R9 370X. Interesting how they used different coolers on on the 200 series. It seems like they created the one just for the 270 non X, the one you have but they could have just used the cooler from the 270X or a tweaked version of 260/X, what do you think? Great video as always! I was rally interested in this one as I had an R7 370 myself for my first rig where I picked the parts. As I was young and stupid, I carried over the PSU and was limited by the fact it only had a 6 pin connector, so this was the best I could get back in 2015, but I wish I knew better, as picking the slightly more expensive R9 380, it would have been a much better buy, granted I would also need a new PSU. Well the card died after 3 years of use and being stupid again, I was limited again by the PSU but I did get the GTX 1060 3GB ( I was considering rx 560 as I was fooled by the 60 naming but now I know much better). When you compared it to the GT 1030, you should have mentioned, that the Nvidia card does not have an encoder, which can be quite a turn off. It depends on the use case of course. Keep up the good work! :)
@@gaming.teacher Thanks for the comment. Yes, the Pitcairn GPU was one of the most rebranded gpus out there. As for the R9 270, the reference design does have a single fan. Most of the partner boards would use two. The GTX 1060 is a nice card. Still, the RX 570 was getting too much attention, and NVidia decided to compete for that market segment with the 3G variant. The GT1030 is a good card for what it is. The reason I keep bringing it up is that the price is not justified. I've seen some GTX 1050 priced lower than a lot of the 1030s. And both can do without a power connector, so ...
@@oldertechtoday The GPU market is very interesting, I must admit. To me it is funny to compare prices of used components, including processors, if it is Intel or Nvidia, they are consistently higher than Radeon and AMD products at least in Slovenia. Have you considered expending to test CPUs as well? I know that this is an expensive hobby to buy components. Also, how many GPUs have you accumulated by now? :D
@@gaming.teacher I do have a few videos on the CPUs that I have (Haswell E3-1241 v3 Xeon, i5 2400). I buy mostly deffective video cards that I try to repair. I have 23 in working condition, and about a similar number that need work on them.
@@oldertechtoday Oh, I see. I will check them out. :) Is it your job to repair electronic circuits or is it just a hobby? Also if I may ask, what is the most common reason for a GPU to die, is it a defective capacitor, burnt resistor or controller or transistor? From your experience I mean. I did work a bit on Digital receivers and other similar electronics and there it was mostly capacitors that blew up.
Did you recorded with capture card? or with the driver?
@@MrJuanjo1997 With MSI Afterburner, no hardware encoding. FPS data was captured in a separate session.
My favorite little beast, used to have one 1gb ver. sold it this summer, still own that asus version r7 260x 2gb & asus r9 380 4gb strix and surprisingly this little beast performed better in 1 gb or less scenario, only cons being vram & lack of second fan or bigger heatsink.Speaking of fans beware of 4 little screws holding it, if you decide to dismount fan.
@@edindzaferovic1451 Thanks for the comment. MSI had multiple variations of the R7 260X. The one in the video is the OC v1. The OC v3 clocks the core the same as OC v1 but the memory is slower: 1250 MHz compared to the 1500 MHz on the v1. If other manufacturers had similar versions, then that might explain some of the differences.
I used to have the HD5670 1GB back in the day. HD5xxx is a great series of gpus. But recently the used market in my area is flooded with gpus and theres RX 560 4GB for only 30 euros. RX 560 is a 75W gpu, it has directx 12, it has a more recent hardware video decoder and more recent drivers + nimez drivers. Those i7 4770 office computers just need a small ssd and with RX 570 you don't need to change the PSU, while the end result is so much better for not much more investment. 👍
In my neck of the woods, an RX 570 goes for 50 USD, and the RX 560 for 40. But you do have a point, there are plenty of modern cards that require less power to deliver much more. The videos on the older GPUs are more for a market where a GT 1030 costs 40 to 50 USD. Or maybe more.
@@oldertechtoday RX 570 8GB at $50 is a steal, but it requires at least an 6 pin and a decent psu.
@@lanelesic I think that the reason they're that cheap in my country is that a lot of them are dumped by miners who want to get rid of them.

Nevertheless the raw power it delivers resembles that of the integrated GPU of the R7 5700g, so i wouldn't suggest anyone to buy this card in 2024, even on an extreme budget, i would suggest to wait for a 260x, or an HD 7850, or an R7 370 that pops at the correct value, and aim for that, since these cards will provide about the same "dead" Driver Support but with 2x the raw power, making them way stronger 720p and still somehow capable 1080p GPUs. As for "dead drivers" True, they are dead for new driver support, nevertheless last stable driver for HD7000/200/300 series was in 2022, and these gpus are compatible with Win11 and Dx12, so still no major setbacks despite the fact that "same era" Maxwell cards from Nvidia keeps receiving driver updates.
The R7 260X has got to be one of my favourites from the GCN 2.0 architecture. And yes, the 260X is slowly coming down in price, close to what the HD 7770 used to be, so it is going to be the better choice.
i love how "mainstream" tech tubers tend to consider complete beast of a GPU like the Rx 570 "close to obsolete" since it won't run a game or 2 in 1080p at 60fps average... while it still manages to do just that in most of the tittles. But yet you find much older and less powerfull GPUs that will run quite modern tittles, if you only settle your expectations in 720p for a modest legacy hardware, you can be quite happy. You might not win a tournament, but you'll play just fine even modern tittles with mid range 10yr old GPU/CPU combos like an Fx6300 or a 2nd gen i5 2400 paired with a gpu like this or maybe a GTX 570 Ti that were considered mainstream yet budget friendly builds 10 years ago. Only downside is that you MUST have 16gb of DDR3 to remove the ram limitation from an already limited PC
@@jotabe1984 It's an act of balancing your expextations with the games and the hardware available. What I'm trying to point out is that you can have fun playing games on your PC and not mortgage the house for it.
isn't the R7 360M or 450M or whatever it was called an overclocked version of this card? would it be a better choice as it's a bit more updated (later revision of the same GPU) and has some more VRAM? i think it just draws board power and it's quite cheap on the used market and easy to find.
@@chazbotic According to techpowerup, both the R9 360 OEM and R7 450 OEM use only board power. And yes, the 450 is an overclocked Cape Verde with 2 GB GDDR5. The 360 OEM however uses the Bonaire GPU. Yeah, I'd like both of them, maybe the 360 OEM better. Not that easy to find though - at least in my neck of the woods.
@@oldertechtoday the HP part numbers from their part surfer site are 917881-001 and 918359-001. might be useful to search with that as sometimes parts recyclers just use the sticker OEM part number and not the chip (if they even remove the cooler to see). some have 4GB VRAM
i really really like how you print out the tech power up gpu specs. very well done man ! i had an hd 7750 and it was great
@@ourchicken Thanks. I run Heaven while the GPU-Z window is open so that all parameters show up correctly (frequency, PCI-E version).
The latest iteration of this card's gpu line is radeon r7 450 4gb from 2018 maybe? - quite a long time in Da game for the GCN 1.0 chip:) Great content man, keep up a good work.
@@victorspencer4885 Thanks. Yes, both Cape Verde and Oland GPUs filled the low end part for quite a few generations. Same happened with Turks and Redwood (TeraScale 2 GPUs).
Great Video, keep it up, not everyone can afford the latest hardware, so it's good to see videos with older hardware. Just out of curiosity, which drivers were you using? Stock AMD drivers? Have you tried using the modified drivers? Would be good to see if the drivers make any difference, I know they add support for newer titles, but do they give a performance benefit as well 🤔👍
@@ripfoxtech I used the official drivers. In my case the platform (cpu, mobo and ram) holds it back, not the drivers.
the RX 580 8GB had such great longevity, still kinda does. 7970 vibes definitely. the RX 480 might be slightly cheaper, but is largely interchangeable. a very wide array of CPUs over the years are "suitable" for these as well, although depending on the exact model i think the PSU might be the limiting factor since it is unlikely to be "drop in" optiplex build compatible like the GTX 750 was. i feel like a cheap skylake/coffee lake build or 1st/2nd gen ryzen works pretty well with the rx 580 and these days are very cheap to put together..
@@chazbotic Yes, Polaris cards do have now the same feel like early GCN 1 cards. And just like them, the limitted driver support is more likely to be the end for Polaris. As for the next platform, I'm leaning more to AM4, but we'll see.
Full potato 🥔
still a decent card.
@@DanielCardei definitely a surprising one. There are some games out there that are more demanding, and the card will not deliver a good experience. RE4 remake for example averages in mid 30s, 1℅ lows in low 20s. The first Warzone was playable on this card; following ones? Not so much. But yes, for a lot of the esports titles and a good deal of some older single player games, the R7 260 will work fine.
I loved the video. Great with my morning coffee. Thanks for giving me that experience. Very curious about GCN 1, 2, and 3. Actually how I came across this video. Just seeing the evolution. 2021 was interesting. Have you experience with custom drivers GCN 1, 2, and 3 drivers like NimeZ or Amernime Zone? I would love to see any video you have on that. Have a lot of GCN 1, 2, and 3 that I would love so much to do modern gaming with just to see if I can pull it off. Have not yet looked into NimeZ or Amernime Zone but just though the vine I have heard both names. Edit: Appears NimeZ and Amernime is the same thing after googling. NimeZ is now known as Amernime.
what about regular DX11 mode no performance mode
@@CrocoDylianVT I don't like the extra grass that comes with dx11 or dx12. You can get rid of it, but only at the cost of rendering distance. Performance mod gets rid of it, period, no downsides.
@@oldertechtoday yes but how well or bad does it run on normal mode
What about Overclock it
still useing my r9 280x 3gb its good still in most games at least 30fps
@@pietruck1215 yes, and it also plays a good deal of the esports titles. Do you use the Nimez drivers? Or the last official package (from 2021)?
I'm curious how it would perform with Lossless Scaling

Those people still on this card prob need to upgrade 😂
@@SiliconSteak yes, if they plan to play more recent aaa games. Fortnite and other esports are still fine.
what we are talking about you spend so much more money nowdays on everything that if someone tells me he can not afford 200$ for a GPU then it must be a lie because you want to play games in 480p ? really ? people used that resolution back then in 2002 - 2006 at max, then we had 720p and now 1080p is standard and 1440p is comon the best performance for Visuals you can get. Who on earth will play video games in 480p or even 720p nowdays when ther phones provide better performance and resolutions ?
@@allxtend4005 oh ... Sometimes the gpu that costs 200 usd in one part of the world costs 400 in other places. Couple that with low income and that paints a totally different picture that what Hardware Unboxed might tell you.
It would be interesting to see the performance of these GPUs with Resizable BAR enabled, this can be done with the "AMD GOP update" (which enables UEFI support on such old GPUs), "ReBarUEFI" (adds Resizable BAR support to the motherboard BIOS. It works even on Sandy Bridge CPUs) and "Radeon-ID" (a video driver with the ability to enable Resizable BAR). If you dare to make the "AMD GOP update", it would be great to see a video of this update from you. As you will be the first to fully demonstrate it on TH-cam.
Thanks for the comment; if I'm not mistaking, the CPU and platform also need to support REBAR, right? I don't think that Haswell supports it. Me being the first to fully demonstrate it on TH-cam is a pretty big red flag: very little people would have the tech skills to reproduce that. I think more needs to be done to lower the bar before bringing this to TH-cam.
I've been using this GPU for decade And im gonna upgrade to rtx 4060 after a few months to be able to play the games that are Locked behind dx 12 And you wanna know what's my CPU?? And motherboard?? Z97-K mother board/ Intel core i7 4790k yeah im gonna get 4060 and use it on my current PC And im Not gonna change my CPU until it melts (don't care about bottleneck)/ just kidding wanna upgrade the rest of the specs later Cause pc specs are so expensive in my country The 4060 itself let's say i just wanna get the GPU if i wanna consider our money to dollar It's 450$ (yaks for fuckin mid range GPU) i either have to sell my PS5 or wait a bit longer to get 4060 to be able to play the dx 12 games This fuckin error Forces me to replace the GPU Really had great time with this GPU but unfortunately it's dead ass GPU that can't run new games because i see stupid ass dx 12 error They left me no choice but to look for new GPU/ fuck i hate these gaming devs
Even after i update my hd 6700 driver, it keep saying driver out of date, so how to fix that?
You don't. You just dismiss the pop-up that mentions the driver, the game should launch. I tested the HD 5770 recently(ish) and the game will run. Just ignore the driver popup.
It's not about the driver popup, when im playing the game on matchmaking or something when the game loads and i spawn on the map the game starts freezing and responding for some time and it sais driver out of date
@@XVIIXVIIXVIIXVII Maybe you get a 'driver timeout', which means something else - typically a hardware problem. Does this happen also when running other games? (Rocket League, DOTA2)
@@oldertechtoday Yeah i installed dota2 and it does the same problem, so yeah i'm kinda lost now and idk what to do...
@@XVIIXVIIXVIIXVII you can't, really. The latest driver for the HD6000 series was launched in 2016 I think. The driver will be out of date. It's the freezing that bothers me: if it happens in all games, then this could be a hardware issue. Could be as simple as a thermal paste change, or it can be more complicated, like not all phases on the GPU power delivery working properly.
To Be honest The R7 250x will be the main media driver for me(a lil bit of M&B warband sessions) if the price lower than 20$
I'd even give the HD7750 a try - doesn't need the 6pin power connector.
Can you test this card on uncharted 4 and alan wake 2
@@omarmohammd1572 I'd avoid these games. These are both DX11 feature level 11_0 cards. I don't think they will even launch the titles you mentioned.
I'm trying to load multiplayer casual matches with my 260 but it practically crashes at the team selection screen
I recently gave it a go with the HD 7770; not quite the same board, but it does use the same driver package. I didn't use the R7 260 recently, so this advice is more of a long shot: try a different driver; if you use the latest one (22.6.1), try the 21.5.1 version (search for a "Previous Drivers" link after typing in your card model in the AMD driver search).
HOW MUCH OSU BRO I HAVE 230 PSU WHICH OF THE GRAPHIC CARD WILL WORK?
None from this video I'm afraid. A GTX 750 Ti or 1050Ti might do, but those are not in this video.
Very helpful video, it will help reduce electronic waste because these cards can still be used for many applications with a little help. I had mine until last year. I had the problem with my HD 6850 that it had too little memory for some newer titles even in the smallest setting, it always filled up every 40 seconds, and it hung for 5-10 seconds and nothing moved in Jurassic World from 2020 as the memory was empty again. I then seriously considered switching to my integrated HD4600, which can address more memory, but was too lazy to convert it, because other older games then ran worse, and I had to look for the settings again. Because of this memory problem, instead of switching to one with 8 gigabytes as I had initially planned, I went to 16 gigabytes in order to hopefully be better equipped for it. In the past, it has been shown from time to time that it is quite good to have a little more memory in reserve, even if the card is a little weak for the amount of memory, and you wonder why it has a little too much that you don't need at first. It later turned out that many textures usually require a lot of memory but less computing power. like the successor cards 7850, which also had twice the memory and can therefore be used for games for longer.
@@askialuna7717 that's a fair point on VRAM size. One of the reasons RE4 Remake requires a lot of video memory is the texture quality and size.
