Bring Back Planners! My 2021 Planner and Journal Lineup!

I'm advocating the return of planners for 2021. I know 2020 was a hot mess and it became hard to plan and/or almost pointless to plan things because we had to be inside, but planners don't always have to be about appointments and events! I like to use my planners to doodle, add structure to my day even if it's just a reminder to water the plants, write to-do lists, and more! I let that go the y...

    Do you have to add to the seam allowance to do french seams on these? I haven't made clothes yet (very newbie!), but I've made a tote bag that used french seams recently, and I quite liked doing those. Thanks! Appreciated coming across this video. Core is one of the pattern companies I have my eye on for trying soon.

    • @CultivatingWhims
      @CultivatingWhims ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I'm just seeing this! But the instructions actually tell you how to do the pattern within the seam allowance given so there's no extra figuring out to do on your part! Which made it quite easy and now I know exactly how to do the same thing on patterns that use the same 5/8in seam allowance without too much work!

  • @ReignBeauofTerror
    @ReignBeauofTerror ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for sharing! I appreciate seeing that there are things you're coming back to, because you can do better now. It makes me feel better about starting a project, knowing I can always improve things later. I'm just getting back into sewing, so I don't have many works in progress. Most of what I'm working on right now is fixing things. I'm patching my way through an old pair of blue jeans with red fabric, and enjoying creating patterns with hand stitches and variegated threads. I have a lightweight, batiked Indonesian coat that's torn right along one of the seams. I'm having trouble figuring out how to fix it. And I have a tank top that's been gathering dust because it requires I do a box stitch and I don't want to 😅

    • @CultivatingWhims
      @CultivatingWhims ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been interested in learning how to do more hand stitching but I haven't really gotten around to it. There's always so much do/learn and my motivation never stays high lol. But at the very least, I want to revisit some things and complete stuff i left unfinished before my hiatus. Mending is such a useful skill. Your jacket reminded me that I also have one where the lining ripped and I should take a look at it.

    • @ReignBeauofTerror
      @ReignBeauofTerror ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CultivatingWhims haha I feel you! So many hobbies, so many techniques! Hand stitching can be slow and frustrating, but so rewarding. It might seem over complicated, but I would recommend dabbling in embroidery once you learn the basics of hand sewing. You'd be amazed what you can with embroidery techniques!

    • @CultivatingWhims
      @CultivatingWhims ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll definitely do that. It's so interesting how fabric can play such a big role in how much I like a pattern. Definitely have patterns where I've had great success in one fabric but hated it in another though I haven't mastered getting it right 100% of the time. I think that comes with experience but I'm happy to experiment and share!

  • @romykruse6266

    Hi! I'm a beginner too and I have found sewing with knits quite tricky. However, the sturdier or thicker the knit, the easier it is. I also made the Tyra tee and I love it. I plan to make a few more. I have also made the Stellan tee which is a free pattern. I started with that one and it has a few fun details to try so you might like it. So a few tips I picked up for knits: use a walking foot (which you already have), use spray starch to stabilize flimsy knits, start sewing about an 1/8 to a 1/4 in so your fabric doesn't get eaten in your machine. I've also used stabilizing stretch tape to help out with seams and or fabric wash away glue (sorry I forget what the actual name is). You can use Wondertape but you'll have to wash it first since it doesn't stretch. I also don't have a serger or overlocker. I use either a lightening stitch or a really small zigzag. I have also loved using a stretch twin needle to finish sleeve and neckline seams. It's quite easy to use once you practice a little bit. Doing great!

    • @CultivatingWhims
      @CultivatingWhims 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are all great tips Romy!! I never thought about using spray starch to stabilize anything. 🤔 I did buy a twin needle because my necklines are always the most horrible part of my project, but I've been a little nervous to use it. Maybe I'll work up the courage soon because I have a few more tshirts I want to make and I want them to be much neater in that area

    • @romykruse6266
      @romykruse6266 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CultivatingWhims I'm glad! Twin needles aren't difficult to use, I promise! Just watch a video on how to thread them properly so they don't get tangled. They really elevate the look of knits and make neckline bands lay flat :)

    I'm from Japan. I understand you hated that rude police officer, however at least you got your wallet and money back which should be the main and the good thing. In Japan they have many unwritten rules and even you don't want to follow them, you can't do anything against them. I also don't like some of them, but end up giving up challenging them.

    • @CultivatingWhims
      @CultivatingWhims 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mori! First, thanks for your comment! I mentioned I did get my wallet back but it still does not excuse the officer for treating me poorly, which is why it ended up being one of my worst memories. Unfortunately, regardless of outcomes, the majority of my bad memories in Japan come from being treated unfairly, less than, or different, most times just for being a foreigner, despite me being nice or attempting to be helpful. I support you in your decision to not fight against some rules if that's what you want to do, but decent treatment isn't one of them lol. Unfortunately, his attitude was not an isolated event.

    • @morisoba2550
      @morisoba2550 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CultivatingWhims Well, I don't mean I have decided to not fight against some rules (in Japan). I'm fully aware of your emotional damage or anger at unfair mistreatment by some official person. But on the other side, I have lived long enough to recognize it's fruitless to recall your negative memory again and again. it's better to move on. Moreover, it's likely you can't change others, or do you believe you can (in the USA or anywhere) ?

    • @CultivatingWhims
      @CultivatingWhims 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mentioned ONE negative experience along with a positive one. I really can't understand why you're stuck on the negative experience but I've lived long enough to recognize that it is pointless to continue to go back and forth on the internet with people, especially about Japan. My experience is my experience and what I chose to share or not share is my decision. Thanks for stopping by.

    What patterns do you recommend for beginner beginner? (AKA never touched a pattern before ) lol

    • @CultivatingWhims
      @CultivatingWhims 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My very first clothing pattern that I completed was Closet Core Patterns Cielo top. I might attempt to do a sew along of it, but for me, the hardest part of the pattern was figuring out the dart and gathering the sleeves, but everything else is just straight forward since it's a kind of boxy shirt. Especially because of the open fit, there isnt much in terms of adjusting that needs to be done (unless you need a small/large bust adjustment. Then I'm not quite sure how it would go). Grainline studios WIllow Tank and Dress was another easy sew that doesnt have many obstacles!

      I would say look for patterns that are popular since that means you can find tons of resources online and I look at professor pincushion for help when I cant figure out the instructions

    Hello :) Those pants look great! For me, a total beginner ( I've only done 1 skirt, 2 aprons & little bathroom bag) your skills are not on a beginner level lol. They are intermediate! Thank you for sharing, I plan to buy the sewing course from closet core pattern & this pants pattern is included. I'm pretty intimidated by pants, but I'll see how it'll go. Also, I saw, that you live in Japan, that's so cool! I've lived in Kyoto for 1 1/2 year myself :)

      I tried the shorts before I tried making the pants but the trick is to just go slow and google anything you dont know lol. I'm glad my skills can pass for at least intermediate. That compliment really makes me happy! How was living in Kyoto?! I keep saying I want to try living in maybe Kansai next because people seem to love it

      @@CultivatingWhims haha, yeah, trying anything to be "quick" always leds to massive mistakes and frustration :D. you're welcome :) looking forward to your next sews! I really enjoyed living in Kyoto!! It's such a nice place. There are many touristy spots which are always overcrowded, but if you leave those main streets, there are soooo many nice places where not many tourist go to. So much to explore! Well, I cannot really compare, bc I only lived in Kansai. I guess the general impression is, that people are more layed back maybe? It is really nice there ^-^

    That quick run through the potentially big story bits like “got engaged, moved in with my fiancées family” 😂😂😂👀 ohhhh and the hoarding tip, that made me mad all over again, after I tried to hoard those limited edition or seasonal apple flavored sodas... 😱🥺😫 And I miss the batting center! 😫 Hindsight - should have gone more.

      If there's two things I learned its hoarding is always the answer and so is the batting center. Ima go three times next time I'm back in Japan 😂😭
