Gibbon Pass Larch Hike, Banff National Park
Our favourite time to hike in the Rocky Mountains is here! Every year in September, the needles on the larch trees briefly turn from green to gold. It makes for a magical scene on many mountain trails, albeit a brief one. The colourful transformation doesn’t last long; there’s typically about two to three weeks to see these vibrant colours. While the most popular hikes are truly amazing, the parking situation and the trails can be over-run with hikers. Gibbon Pass is a great alternative. While not the most spectacular larch hike, there is plenty of golden colour mixed into the day hike that also includes four alpine lakes.
In summary, you’ll enjoy lots of golden larches, four mountain lakes, one mountain pass and not many people. Total distance out and back is 23 km, 713 meters net gain in elevation and 7 hours of hiking time. Better add at least three hours more for breaks, rests, and photography if you’re slow like me!

Bertha Lake backcountry campground - Waterton National Park

Don't be fooled by the short distance of this hike, the climb is steep, but the beautiful lake that is your destination is well worth it. To access Bertha Lake backcountry campground, your journey will start at the Bertha trailhead right in the town of Waterton. It’s a great alternative to Banff National Park in the Rocky Mountains, south of Calgary and just north of Glacier National Park in Mo...

I feel myself hiking ..right along with you.
Beautiful…..
Hey @papasteveonthe move, We booked El Beso for Oct 18, Is it possible to upgrade to Privilege? or is it not worth it? Just looking for amenities not the room as we have a swim up in El Beso already
My opinion only, if you have a swim up on the El Beso side, you don’t need Prestige unless you want a chair at the beach. @bradwall8913
it's now a marriott property.
Thanks for the update
Great video Papa Steve! Is there waiter service around the pools serving drinks and food? Are US dollars or pesos preferred for tipping?
There is definitely service for drinks around the pool. Food is self serve. I always found that pesos are more appreciated as the staff does not pay exchange to spend them, however dollars are gladly accepted.
Wonder what is it cost to ride the train from this hotel to term 1..
It is completely free to ride from Terminal 1 to the Alt or to terminal 3.
@@PapaSteveOnTheMove thank you so much. Just booked a room at the Alt for next summer.
Holy cow! That's great.
Keep on trekking!
Another excellent video! Can't wait for the next one. 👍7
Thanks for the support. Upcoming are day hikes to Gibbon Pass and Bertha Falls and perhaps a gear review. Then back to Mexico!
We stayed at the Cartwright on our honeymoon from September 25th to September 29th, 2024, before we continued on to L.A. A beautiful, historic hotel with lots of flair and a wonderful atmosphere. The location near Union Square and Powell Street is perfect. The staff is friendly, courteous and helpful. I am sure that my wife and I will stay at the Cartwright again on our next visit to San Francisco. Our personal tip: Breakfast at Lori's Diner, just a few steps from the Cartwright. 😋
Thanks for watching (and for the dining tip)!
Obrigado meu amigo Steve sua explicação foi muito boa
No es nada, amigo. Gracias !
Are there restrooms on the cruise boats?
There are no toilets on the boats - only in the park.
We’ve been there three times now, it’s been a wonderful experience every time!
I’ve been twice myself. Would definitely go back.
hi, thanks fir that video, question if i book platinium suites on adults side without children, can i go to the icecream shop on the kids side ? best regards.
If I recall, the ice cream bar and pirate themed restaurant were reserved for the family club only. Best to check with the resort.
Very helpful. We'll be there end of September. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Very helpful. Just a question - if i have booked a 3-4pm slot, is that the earliest i can use the shuttle from the park and ride? I assumed i could comea earlier to explore lake louise and then the transfer to moraine was 3/4pm but maybe ive got that wrong?
I think you’ll be okay. Let me know how it went.
Hi! Thank you so much for your helpful info! Was the parking area where you ride the shuttle bus busy?? I was wondering what time I should get there so I can park my car at the parking spot where the shuttle bus stops. Earlier is better?
Hi, the parking area is busy but is very large. You will find a parking spot but could be a long walk to the ticket centre if you arrive late in the day.
Oh thank you so much for your quick response! That helped me a lot!!!
Really Helpful
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Thank you for the video! I had bought the ticket to Lake Louise and with that can I also visit Moraine Lake?
Yes you can! Parks Canada offers an interlake shuttle back and forth between the two lakes.
Great Video. My brother Owns a Condo in Sutton Place and lives there. I go up there quite a bit in the winter for skiing. Really nice place
I was back there this summer! They are building a golf course close by. It’s a great spot! Thanks for watching.
thus it will be shuttle bus $8 + Park entry fee $11.75 of each?
Yes, park entry fee always applies when stopping in the park and is not included in the bus ticket.
I am impressed by this hotel after watching your content. I would like to book this hotel for a week of remote working, that means we need consistent and high speed internet for zoom calls and searches. Do you know if their WiFi is fast enough in the rooms and common areas?
I only used the wifi on my mobile devices, but had no trouble downloading movies. I think you’ll be okay. The wifi in the Prestige area was good.
@@PapaSteveOnTheMove thanks! Will you be able to access WiFi on your computers?
I don’t see why not
Love it
is it walking distance to downtown?
It’s one of the closest. Unless you have mobility challenges, it’s a short walk.
Gorgeous scenery
Taylor Lake is a fairly short day hike if you can squeeze it in to a trip in Banff National Park.
How about tipping? How often and how much did you tip?
Great questions! I usually tip US $1 or MEX 20 pesos every time someone serves me a drink or at the buffet (per person). More for a-la-carte. If the bellhop does an exceptional job delivering the bags (up many flights of stairs), I will tip $5 or 50 pesos. I’ve seen others more generous but this level always gets us great service.
@@PapaSteveOnTheMove Thanks.
If I book round trip roam transit shuttle in the morning to louis lake .can I use connector shuttles of park canada from louis lake to moraine lake and back to louis lake without booking shuttle on park canada website or do I need to book tickets for shuttle to moraine lake on park canada website.thank you
You will need to book tickets with Parks Canada to obtain a voucher. The voucher must be redeemed at the Lake Louise ski area. You are not able to board the shuttle from either lake for your first trip. Your Roam transit pass is entirely a separate ticket.
@PapaSteveOnTheMove Thank you for the reply. Can we take ticket to moraine lake through roam transit .
@aanyam6394 Yes, you can book a ticket with Roam Transit but be prepared early as there is usually very high demand for tickets
Do we need two separate reservation to park 2 cars at Park and ride or one booking will do for all paxs? What I leaned that Parking is free who reserve shuttle but would like to know how it works. TIA
Yes parking is free but each passenger needs a ticket to ride the bus
Do the rooms have clothes washer/dryer?
It has been a few years but I don’t remember having laundry in my suite.
Great video.
Thanks for watching! I’m headed back there soon.
thank !
You're welcome!
How long did it took?
We were in the rain and travelling slow and did it in three hours
@@PapaSteveOnTheMove thanks!! I'm doing it on September and will have to hike the 11 kms from the parking lit, so this is very helpful
Thank you for the video! Very informative. Is the bowling, arcade etc an extra charge to enjoy? Or is it included in the price?
Great question! I didn’t do either personally so best to verify with the resort. I’m pretty sure the bowling was included, not sure about the arcade.
So true. May you find many rainbows
I beg to disagree. Worst food. Same food over and over. Rooms ok. not too great.
Sorry to hear about your experience. The Prestige area I stayed in was very nice.
Would you recommend a swim up pool room and is the all inclusive 24 hours and does it included access to all areas or is there any additional costs
@yvonneburns3855 if you like to go directly into the pool from your suite, consider the swim up suite. It could also be useful if you prefer to sleep in. The all-inclusive nature of the resort allows access to the restaurants and bars during open hours only. Each restaurant and bar keeps its own hours. There are still some Privilege areas that require additional costs up front and allow further access to some restaurants, bars and premium drinks.
@@PapaSteveOnTheMove Thank you, I've booked a swim up room for August
@yvonneburns3855 you’re going to love it
Thank you so much! Now when you buy the bus pass online you still have to pick up a voucher somehwere is that correct? Also can you board any the bus at any time slot once youre ready for the next lake?
@J19901 you are correct that despite buying the pass online, you will still have to pick up the voucher before boarding. Once you have a voucher, it is good to hop on and off through the day.
Beautiful
Thank you!
Hi there Steve, thanks for the video. I'm looking for some advice. I will be staying at Ocean Riviera Paradise with my wife next month. Booked an Eden suite without realizing El Beso existed. Is there any benefit with either section of the resort aside from their relative locations? Such as if I stay with the Eden, will I not be able to access El Beso amenities? And for reference, El Beso is a bit cheaper.
Hi @amlegrice the biggest difference is El Beso is adults only. There is a restaurant and a pool reserved with no children. The Eden has a much nicer location very close to the ocean. It depends if you prefer the adults only or the beach. In my opinion, the beach is full of seaweed and a bit windy so I would select the El Beso. Either way, you will have an excellent vacation. Enjoy!
I usually use my puffer jacket, or stuff clothes in a bag as my pillow.
@markschrimpf7575 last few times out I have been using that lined stuff sack with clothes. Sometimes I wear my puffer to sleep if it’s very cold.
It’s specially great after a long hike… you will not have any painful muscles , a good dunk in the lake does a body good, I know that’s what we do.
Oh come in get in…… 😊
Great short my friend
Thanks for watching!
Love it
what a hero! so, basically, you can visit both lakes with just Moraine Lake ticket? thanks for the tips!
Yes indeed! One ticket for both lakes! Thanks for watching.
Lovely work my friend 👏👏
Yea
Great video! We are planning a day trip to Moraine lake from Calgary but all the time slots for shuttle to Moraine lake are fully booked so we are thinking booking the Lake Louise shuttle first and then take the Interlake shuttle from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake as that's included in the ticket. Will there be a lot of people lining up for the connecter shuttle from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake? How much buffer time should we allow us for waiting in line? Thank you!
@jizhaoli2282 it could depend on the weather and possibly the date (busier on weekends and holidays) how long the lineup for the inter lake bus will be. It’s a great idea. I’m thinking arrive 15 minutes early and check the line. Then you have the option to join or to spend a few minutes doing something else.
Thanks for the memories of Little Yoho. As a teenager I went there. My last name is Yoho. When I found the park on a map I had to see what was up. As a city boy from Ohio I was out of my element. The vastness of the forest between the massive mountains gave me my first clue of how small I really am. More, the bear prints in the ground gave me a sense of true terror. In all it was like being brought to life, awake in a new way. That was 47 years ago. Thanks, Art Yoho, from Columbus.
Hi @artyoho thanks for watching. It’s a special place for sure. I really appreciate your comments. You could see more of the area by checking the Yoho National Park playlist on the channel.
The Best! Great help!
Happy to help. It’s a special place, so busy, nobody needs the extra headache to figure out how to get there! Thanks for watching.
