Strings: Ball End vs Loop End.
This video explains the difference between loop end and ball end strings. It shows you how to look at the end of your mountain dulcimer to see which pins you have which will in turn let you know what type of strings you need.
We have many varieties of string packets available as well as individual strings. We also sell strings by the dozen.

    Hi Tim, This video really helped me do this the right way. I have a question regarding your jack. How did you mount the jack through the tailblock? Is it a factory option? Thanks.

    You don't need to remove the ball to fit it over the head of the string pin. You can push the straight end of the string through the ball and pull it until it makes a small loop that fits over the head of the string pin.

    A quick thank you to the team. My Dulcimer, this very model, arrived Saturday. What a beautiful sound it has and it is a beautiful instrument. As a beginer dulcimer player, it is outstanding and to me the best beginner dulcimer to own. I tried several at a local folk music store who had a few other brands including this one. Glad I ordered from McSpadden. All the best to the entire team.

    Micarta is an amazing material. I looked it up and suprised it was developed in 1910. It can contain, linenm canvasm paper, fiberglass, carbon fiber, or other fabric in a thermosetting plastic. (that's a mouth full). I have had knives with micarta handles and are wonderful. While I love ebony, it's price and the fact it is endangered and controled speices have prevented me from going to ebony. Thank you both for the great explaination and choosing what might work for us. I still like the traditional look of fret board matching the body. 🙂

    • @thedulcimershoppemcspadden1564
      @thedulcimershoppemcspadden1564 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The heart on a mountain dulcimer is a very common sound hole for many makers. Typically on instruments of many kinds there will be a label inside of the instrument that you can see through a sound hole. This should have some kind of information on who made it or manufacturer...

    Beautiful sound. Future request though - please add at the end a bar or two of the instruments being strummed, not just plucked. Different instruments can sound better plucked than strummed and vice versa. Having a bit of both could help.

      yes, strings with ball ends are certainly more of a challenge. Sometimes it is handy to have a friend just put their finger on the pin holding the ball on until you get a little tension on the string. That is why at the start of 2021 we changed the Ginger over to loop end strings...

    Great information for us newbies! I always wondered, with instruments, how will you know if you should change the strings? just when they break? Never heard about the suggestion to change them after about 50 hours of playing. Is it because aged strings are harder to play? just don't stay in tune? something else? I suppose changing them at set intervals makes sense to me. I'm fairly prolific at sewing and have taught sewing education for years. Old school thinking was to change your needle when it breaks. Those sewists with a bit more wisdom know to change them often. It's said the lifespan of a machine sewing needle is 8 hours for a common household machine, professional high-speed machines are about half that.) If you cannot remember when you changed your machine sewing needle just go ahead and change it. A damaged tip or eye on a needle will cause microscopic tears in the fabric and/or thread. Your finished garment or quilt will be fine and look wonderful when it's finished but wash it once or twice and you'll see the frayed fabric show up all along every seam line. (Ask me how I know - especially with knits) Your hard work of sewing will only result in a garment with a short lifespan - when it starts ripping at the seams with use. Thanks for this info on how to change my strings on my dulcimer. It's so helpful.

    • @thedulcimershoppemcspadden1564
      @thedulcimershoppemcspadden1564 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is no hard fast rule when to change your strings, but usually it is for sound quality. After time they will not "ring" quite as nicely. If your instrument still sounds good to you, there is no reason to change them. I would though recommend changing them just before you enter the recording studio when you fulfill your recording contract...
