Follow my journey as a new Pilot flying a Daher Kodiak 100 Turboprop. My goal is for this channel to help motivate new pilots and give more insight about the Kodiak 100 and why it was the aircraft of choice for me.
IFR Approach into Truckee Kodiak 100
We were the first plane to make it in for the day due to a low fog layer and clouds. Weather cleared up a bit about 15 minutes before we arrived. Sure beats flying to our alternate which was Reno.

On July 21, 2023, I embarked on a journey to Austin Texas to meet my friend Jesse and pickup the bike he had built for me over the past 2 years. The trip was filled with anticipation and excitement as I looked forward to both the flight to Austin as well as seeing my friend and finally taking delivery of my bike. The journey itself was marked by moments of reflection and a sense of adventure, a...

Did I Really Take a Commercial Check Ride In The Kodiak?
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
12 months and I’m officially a Commercial Pilot. Thanks to my mentors @FlyingwithRich and Matt Keegan for training me, and a special thanks to the professional flight sim and clown pilots on Reddit that can say they got a PPL, IFR, and Commercial rating while logging over 400 hours of Dual time in a Turbine in less than 18 months for the motivation 😉

I'd like the 100 stripped of the bottom pod and with the 900 horse pt6
With enough money you can definitely have that. Send me some pics when it’s being delivered 🙌

Dig the video's, doc. Saw you with Rich on his videos and found your channel. Something I "discovered" while training was the generic advice given on the internet was a little helpful, but everyone should take a realistic look at their own situation. Multiple people told me or suggested in general that I should take three lessons a week. I trained out of a fairly busy class C airport and it was not unusual to "lose" 15-20 minutes on the ground dealing with clearance, ground and holds waiting for jets to land/takeoff. It did not take me long to figure out the best approach there was to take two lessons a week but to ask the instructor for a longer lesson each time. That is not to say the time on the ground was wasted or training at a class C was a bad idea, the time dealing with traffic, wake turbulence, having to squeeze in a take off or landing between passenger jets and talking to ATC a ton each and every flight was very valuable as was the time at the beginning to talk to the instructor while we were in the plane on the ground without much going on. Also a little stressful and overwhelming at times...like being asked to do a rolling takeoff while a 737 is on final and you can see the landing light approaching. The hours required seem to vary so much from person to person and I guess that makes sense. It is safe to say it will likely cost more than most people think, the folks that run the school I used were very honest about it, some schools are not. My brothers both have their instrument ratings, one of them that did almost everything with an instructor paid more than he did for his initial PPL, the other was a member of a flight club and did the majority of his "training" with a safety pilot from the club and not an instructor and it cost him much less. My advice for folks would be if you can afford one lesson a week do it, it does not get cheaper as you get older. If it takes more time that is fine, but one could sit on their hands doing nothing for years waiting to be able to afford 1,000$ a week and that is not bringing one any closer to their goal. For the record, all my training has been in super crappy but well maintained older 172's. I learned on them and have absolutely no issue using a G1000 or other GPS. My opinion is one can learn a G1000 in 8-10 hours, it should not be a factor in most people's decision making.
Thanks for the feedback and watching!
you have a lovely plane
Thank you!
i missed the link to the instructor you used to prep for the Instrument check ride? Great looking plane and HUGE effort to get it all done

Hey, great videos! I like how you share your experiences with brutal honesty. Congratulations on your beautiful airplane and on your rating. Question, what are your thoughts about flying to certain altitude only unless you use oxygen? Can you do a video about that? (Or maybe you did and I missed it). Thank you again for sharing your experiences!
Thank you. I will do a video on that shortly! But we generally fly the Kodiak at 12,500ft no oxygen. If I’m alone at altitude for a while my rule is to put on oxygen just in case. With the Kodiak it’s really not a big deal.
For Canada, I hear the IFR written is fairly challenging. ut so many commercial pilots passed it, it is not that impossible. You cannot fly to many places in the world or cross oceans without the IFR.But then , you can afford a Kodiak, so insurance is a smaller expense. It is almost like the father that bought a new Corvette for his son's 16 year old birthday, the insurance will be scary, but they can afford it. You are also not using your plane to the limits, like those bush pilots in Indonesia, so you can get insurance.
The IFR was tough. But now I’m commercial/multi with a 525 jet rating. I fly the Kodiak IFR a lot. Thanks for watching.
Sounds like you have lots of money, this will overcome lots of insurance problems. Often, if you just have low time C172, the question is not what insurance will cost, but whether you are insurable at all. But then a Kodiak is not a very high performance airplane. I would not try such a big jump , from a172, I try a 206 or Piper equivalent, then a beat up Caravan that did its service with Fed Ex. But insurance is not how you feel, it is how they feel taking risks for you.
Money overcomes many problems.
Any truth to the stereotype that doctors are good at making money while being bad at handling it? That motorcycle seems to back it up. The plane and the skillset are legit though. Next video can you post footage of the bike in its transformed state as a figure skating robot?
Next video will be of this really awesome machine I just bought. It plates hot dogs in 24k gold. It’s a technical marvel. Thanks for watching.
Congratulations on winning in this life!
Was there a wait to purchase your plane or was it off the lot?
I waited a long time. I was lied to by Kodiak and the after sales support has been very poor. Doing a video on all of this shortly so stay tuned!
Is liability required to fly?
No although it’s a better idea to have to than not especially if you have an expensive airplane.
You don't need no stinkin' pavement! ;)
This was good. It's nice to put companies on notice to public to let them know sometimes they lose out on customers based on their sales team's inability to sell a product. Hope this was a wake up call to Cessna. That being said, I do agree the Kodiak looks cooler lol.
Sadly I will be doing a video regarding my 2 year ownership experience and the after sales support and unfortunately it’s sad to say I am very unhappy with how Kodiak has managed their service and warranty after purchasing the airplane. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!
@@kodiakmdoh no! I’m very sad to hear that…. Are you planning on keeping it or looking at something else? Let us know!!!! Maybe a nice tbm or a pc12 for you!
A tbm is a Daher product and I wouldn’t spend any of my hard earned money with them. Pc12 is amazing but expensive and still slow. Likely keeping the Kodiak and flying a citation m2
Sounds like you are evaluating the sales departments of both companies more than the airplanes. The Caravan is a much older design and I can use the term proven. It is easier to pick up a used Caravan. Is your wife a pilot too? An old auto salesman told me decades ago , if your upholstery and trims are nice, they will buy that car even if it got an elastic band under the hood.
Sounds like you didn’t watch the whole video…
@@kodiakmd I did watch the whole thing, but what I did not do is to pull out the specs of both planes and compare them side by side , since I am not yet in the market for one that size. A lot of your opinions are subjective, such as the Caravan feels old and less roomy inside etc , but if a buyer can save several hundred of dollars? Most buyer of this class of planes are commercial buyers and they definitely do not take their wives to see the products , as if they are buying their family car.
Wondering if you’ve ever even been in a Caravan or a Kodiak. If you are looking to save several hundred thousands of dollars definitely go with the caravan. I was buying a family airplane… to fly with my wife and kids. Similar to buying a family car…
@@kodiakmd It is rare for non commercial purchase for such airplanes, I rode in Caravans before , but so what, to be able to form a good judgement, I feel I need some stick time in both, which I do not have. The Caravan is slower and older design, that means at least a panel, engine upgrade, that will neatly eat up that cost saving.
Hi Amir. Great video! Thanks for sharing. I would like to ask you if you wouldn't mind talking to a friend who flies humanitarian aid in the Amazon region. He is raising funds to acquire a Kodiak in order to improve his missions in that area. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you.
You can email me thekodiakmd@gmail.com. Happy to help.
The Kodiak maybe great for light loads or private operators but for commercial operators in the worlds most extreme environment’s like “West Papua” (no thats not PNG) they are outperformed by the Cessna 208 and 208B. The PAC 750XL is also outed by the 208 and Kodiak. This guy brought his plane on the experience he had on the sales demo and thats great. Well done Kodiak sales team. The Kodiak has some real C of G problems and some possible control Column binding issues. The Kodiak was designed for the requirements of MAF, (Missionary Aviation Fellowship) If you don’t know who MAF is then you should research them.
Stayed tuned as I will be releasing a video shortly regarding my 2 year ownership journey and the troubles I have had receiving after sales service and terrible warranty policies on my Kodiak.
You want to fly an aircraft that, quite frankly, is a lot more than what you should be flying with your experience level. So the insurance charges you for the level or risk. And as much as you don't really want to hear this, you are high risk.
Have my type rating in a jet now… what do you own and fly captain 🧐
Great video, great content, I’ve been watching u since your video with Rich…
Thanks for watching!
"When I first got the airplane, I was having a hard time landing, I was having a hard time holding airspeed on approach." That insurance premium looks a little more understandable, doesn't it? 🤔
I just close my eyes on landing. It’s really fun. You should try it.
Whats the G rating on it
3.5 million 🤣
Thanks for story it was very informative.
Thanks for watching

Thanks for watching!!
Nice! -- QUESTION -- Could you still install the float plane option to land on water, or is that something that must be decided before it is built and bought? How big a process is it to convert it? (we are in the PNW and love water planes)
If you have a pod you can’t do floats. So you would need to remove the pod and then if you have tks you have to move the tank into the plane. It’s expensive to do that but not a big deal. The Kodiak factory will do it and it takes them a few weeks.
I used to live up by Tonopah. Miss Vegas, I am back in So Cal now. I love Havasu and it is my dream to live there. I would love to fly over the Vegas area and then go down the river to Havasu. I only get to see it from the water. This is a gorgeous plane, love the color of it.
Thanks for watching!
What lake was that?
Probably big bear
Never disregard the initial sales presentation
Agree. Probably a good sign of how future ownership will be. So far Kodiak has been great
Crazy that Cessna sh*t the bed so hard.
Most of their planes sell to cargo carriers. Very happy with my purchase. Thanks for watching
This POS steals from his fans. Wouldn't piss on Jesse if his guts were on fire
"never feel sorry for a man who owns a plane..". Anthony Hopkins in the movie The Edge. My neighbor pays 100k a year for property taxes on his home in Huntington Beach , CA.
Do you know how to make fire from ice?
So your side window is cracked as well? Seems a weak point on KODIAKS.
Yes. For whatever reason they can’t figure it out but they are replacing for free in any Kodiak regardless of age/time.
Thank you VARY much for this! The 'Dark Side' of becoming a new/or used, aircraft owner.. PPL or not, this is something when you have low hours not talked about. I Love your airplane. But it has a Price Tag long after the buying is done. This part of the pilot life is the hard-hart, of reality. Vary good info for all. Thank you!
It gets so much harder than this. I’m thinking of doing another video about it
...I like the old bike better. 😁👍
Old is gold
Would be sweet to include performance differences! But overall great video!
That’s a great idea. I can see if I can do that.
All the seasoned pilots in the comments: no instrument rating!?!?!?? Me: You didn't ask kodiak about insurance first?!?!?!😅
Kodiak’s response was that insurance would be no big deal 🤣
Nice scenery. I live on South Shore. All the pilots show videos flying into Truckee, but none going to South Shore. Why is that?
I’m unsure. We go to north star and the airport is just about 10 mins away. Super convenient.
Nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great views! Thanks for sharing!

I'm sorry you had a bad intro to the Caravan. While never involved in sales, it sounds like to nme that Cessna has a two tiered approach to sales. Intro as passenger then as pilot. In fact I'm disappointed in the first impression you had of the aircraft. it sounds like they were treating you as a paying passenger rather than a potential customer. Yes it was designed in the early 80s. And has been on the market since receiving type certificate in 84. So yes it might be a bit dated in appearance but it's proven it's worth over the last 40 years.
To each their own. I’d never spend money buying an inferior, dated product that has ancient safety certifications with zero innovation in 40 years. Thanks for watching.
Is Jesse still building bikes? How much minimum do you think I need to have him build me a bike? I always liked his bikes. I just want a real simple clean white Chopper murdered out.
He is but it takes some time. I would reach out to him. My bike is so sick.
I think you must come to my Country and you can make comparison between caravan and Kodiak when we fly in the Papuan mountains..
I watch missionarybushpilot that’s enough for me. Thanks for watching
So this is how all these doctors on the blancolirio channel are ending up as crash studies. Doctors as it turns out are just as human as everyone else and therefore make asinine/ dumb decisons. The captain of a plane should never be out of their seat unless it’s an emergency, not to mention I’ve never seen a checklist being done on a consistent basis. You may have a great profession and a lot of money but don’t get too cocky for your ego or the social media points because what’s all that if your dead. This was hard to watch.
🤣🤣 the plane has autopilot. It just flies on its own. Thanks for watching captain.
