I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your videos and free courses! I've been doing this as a hobbyist amateur for many years, but felt stuck musically and creatively until I started watching your videos. I know a lot on this topic, but you really help me to KNOW it. I love the way they are organized and the deep dives into these specific areas! 😊
Thank you very much for your kind words and for your support, my friend. I'm grateful to help you out on your musical path 😊
Nice, I really like how this sounds! Btw any chance you could make Dark synthwave (something like Dance with the dead) tutorial someday?
Thanks! The problem is that DWTD use real guitars, bass and drums so without those elements, it's almost impossible to get that sound. Possibly I could do something about other Darksynth artists like Carpenter Brut in the future 😊
@@SynthwaveDojo oooh, carpenter brut would be cool!
Thanks for this content, is amazing
My pleasure!
This sounds amazing.
Thank you my friend! 🤩
Really great tutorial man. I like that you went into such detail of the basic elements of the track, then put it all together in a nice simple arrangement and showcased what your automation was doing. You really showed an excellent example for how to create the perfect starting point that can then be developed into a full length track intuitively. Thanks for this look under the hood its definetly inspiring. Btw the song turned out great, i love it!
Thank you very much for your detailed feedback and kind words. This is very helpful for me. If you liked this tutorial you’ll very likely enjoy my Let’s Make Synthwave video series. I start an idea and turn it into 90 seconds of music totally live and in the moment. I explain everything I do in great detail. I’m always here in case you have any questions about anything that I do. Thanks for your support! 💪🏻☺️
@SynthwaveDojo thanks bro, I will definitely check your video series out!
Aww tuned in near the end, learned a lot and gonna watch from the beginning! Need to turn on notifications so I don't miss the Live stream!
awwww, well yeah great thing there's the replay. Turn on those notifications 😉. Thanks for watching!
Always need Alonso’s notifications on!
Right on! 😊
God bless U!!!
Thanks, you too!
What about drum drum pattern pack for this synth 😅 some tasty fills and basoc groove, can be cool! I will be glad to do it together if you like
Sounds like a cool idea. You can do it!
@@SynthwaveDojo i will ;) also spoke with the plugin company
@@floatinganarchychannel3204 very cool!
Compatible with MacOS Sonoma ?
I don't use MAC so I don't know, sorry
Beautiful video and very informative! So generous of you to create and share this video. Thank you. 🙏
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's my pleasure!
What a wonderful trasure!
I'm glad you found it useful my friend!
Thanks but I can't get it to show up in MAC Studio Silicon or with Rosetta enabled. Any thoughts.
Sorry that I can't help you further but possibly it has to do with using it on a MAC. Some MACs are supported but since it's a free synth that doesn't get regular updates, possibly your system isn't supported. If you check the comments here plenty of MAC users say they can't make it work: www.kvraudio.com/product/pg-8x-by-ml-vst
@@SynthwaveDojo Yep. It works on my old 2009 mac pro. But not the new mac. thanks for replying.👍
glad you found a way to make it work!
Everytime I hear that Scream Lead my hair starts blowing in the wind and my room fills with smoke. Is this normal?
Totally 🤭🫣☺️
This is absolutely awesome! Thank you. I happen to love Miami Nights 1984 and I have a hardware synth setup (Deepmind 12 and some others) and have been wondering how to get the arrangement right for these kinds of tracks. I'm going to recreate this, and your Timecop 1983 version this week. Your teaching style makes it so easy to understand. Thanks again!!
I’m glad to help out. Let me know how it goes making your tracks. I’m here in case you have any questions. Thanks so much for watching! 🤩💪🏻
@@SynthwaveDojo Hi! I made the track and it came out great! Thanks so much for this amazing tutorial. What's interesting is that the final track *sounds* so complex, even though it's just a few relatively simple parts (bass, drums, chords, lead, and I added a simple pad layer and a high twinkling atmospheric layer). I didn't know anything about mastering, but I watched some videos on that, applied some EQ, compression, and limiting, and when I play my track back-to-back with some of my favorite artists' tracks, they sound very similar! My biggest challenge wasn't the music, but getting multiple hardware synths coordinated with their respective MIDI channels, audio routing to my audio interface, etc., but it was worth learning and this was a fun way to do it! Thanks again. I'm looking forward to checking out more of your videos and applying the techniques!
Korg have just mentioned they have a sale on. Wavestation now $50!!
Oops. I missed it. Watching now. Get set. Ready. Go. Dojo.
I hope you liked it! 😉
Regarding the low volume output of Wavestation you may go at "Settings" and at the bottom it has an option "Output Gain". You may set it up to +12dB, but as i said the interface is incomprehensible...
Thanks for the tip. Thing is that the setting doesn't save for the next time you open the synth, you have to do it every time 😥
This is a message to the Guys at Korg.... Guys please hire a good UX designer and change the "advanced" settings of your M1 & Wavestation... you made the VST's and since they run in a huge screen its a pity to have such BS interface.... you suppose to make it easy for us.... please? This thing is incomprehensible at least, and probably the UX was made by engineers, not designers/musicians ... Please take a look how Arturia or UVI did it????
I feel your pain. It seems Korg wasn't too concerned with the UX when they made these plugins, they are super dated in terms of looks and hard to use. Possibly they just wanted to get the sound of the hardware and make it available as plugins as quickly as possible. Quite a bummer really
Great video! I was wondering when you transposed the toms, is there an "academically proper" guideline when you want to set the tuning of a 4 or 5 tom setup or one can tune them however he likes and thinks that sounds right?
Great question. First of all, either use 2 toms or 3, not 4 or more. Most drum kits have 3 toms or less, over 3 is very prog rock 😉. You can take two approaches: 1) Simple- make sure your toms are a good 2-4 semitones apart so they sound different to you 2) Complex - tune them a perfect 4th or perfect 5th apart. Don't try this, stick with #1 😂
@@SynthwaveDojo thanks a lot!!!!! I will try and the 2nt thing since i like to try "academic" things....
Sounding great buddy! I'm surprised I don't see you using RC-20 at all? Never tried it ?
Picked this up a while back for some ambient dnb, very excited to see what you make with it here!
You'll be surprised by the amazing synthwave stuff you can do with it 😉
@21:33 you need to a dual-pulse oscillator setup and thin-out the PW, detune the oscillators apart a little bit to get that metallic hollow sound.
Thank you very much for your input Saif. It's an honor to have a talented sound designer like yourself visit us over here 😊
@@SynthwaveDojo a pleasure to me buddy, thanks for your encouraging words 🤗
Was the Korg M1 used to make the Doogie Howser MD theme song?😂
definitely maybe! 😂
Great to see you having fun with that awesome synth! I like your setup in creating a song too. Interesting to see.
Glad you like it!
❤❤
😊
M1 was a performer's dream back in that era. It was the "plug and play" type of thing! This video was so 80s! After watching that i feel like that If I switch on the tv I will see th Material Girl video clip and if I switch channel it will show Samantha Fox 👌👍❤️
The M1 both hardware or plugin are monsters. So many great sounds to play with. I wish I’d change the channel and see Samantha Fox 🫣😆
We are sooooo spoiled these days, when we can call up a VST that sounds just like expensive 80s and 90s synths, and get all the presets at a flick of the mouse or iPad press. These are amazing times. But then again…take me back to the 80s…please! I drove my Jeep Renegade 88mph, but nothing happened. Sigh. 😊
You are so right! That’s why it’s our duty to make all the music we can! 💪🏻🙏🏻
Unusual choice of using only the Korg M1 in a Synthwave track, but it works! Great track Alonso! I still have my Korg M1, bought in January 1989. I had a lot of fun with it. I was never particularly thrilled with its drums sounds, but I like the way you processed them. The vst plugin has some things that the original instrument didn't have, and it also has all the sounds from all the existing expansions cards. The plugin was also a great buy.
I was curious too about what the result would be and I’m very happy with how it went. I’m so jealous of you having the real deal. Last night I just browsed and played patches for like an hour. That thing is a dream machine and has so many great sounds it’s insane. Thanks for watching!
@@SynthwaveDojo I'm no longer using the real workstation... It still can plays its sounds but I can't edit them due to many broken buttons. The vst plugin is better and has more sounds. 😀 Do you own any hardware synth?
Oh what a shame! I don’t have any hardware synths. Someday I want to get either a Juno X or Jupiter X
@@SynthwaveDojo Roland!Both are great choices. I bought a System-8 four years ago and I'm super happy! 👋
Very cool!
I've watched many of your synthwave tutorials these past couple of weeks as I attempted to make my own synthwave track. Seeing your composition process and various production techniques you employ was incredibly helpful. Thank you
I’m glad to help out. You can make Synthwave too, just keep going!
Amazing as always bro !!! You always inspire me to make something new.. th-cam.com/video/PP3GnVvL-hk/w-d-xo.html That my new track night lover, with a lot of techniques I've learned from you :)
6:50 that's the patch used in "I'm going slightly mad" by Queen iirc
wow, I think so too! 🤩
I think M1 has the most used samples in the music industry ever. They should have named MTV like M1TV...
Loved this advice. Will try asap. But I have a question. Isn’t it possible to set your level based on LUF of each element ? Let’s say kick at -20lufs, bass ate -18 lufs and so on ?
using loudness (LUFS) at least in my opinion is more for mastering than mixing. But do try it out and let me know how it goes!
Ohhhh...can't wait to have time for this one, Alonso. I haven't had time for anything music related, even YT videos lately. Got some catching up to do...and this will be 1st on my list! Thanks my brother!
I'm sure you'll enjoy it! 😊
Thank you! This is so inspiring and brought lyrics to mind. So I guess I have a new project to work on.
I was thinking about turning this into a track with vocals after today's session. I'm glad you enjoyed it and found some inspiration 🥳
@@SynthwaveDojo I loved it! And I would love to hear what you come up with for lyrics!
At 45 I am trying to let go and go back to the enthusiasm of the synthwave dojo. It is working. I just love making music.
making music is the best thing ever. No matter your age, never stop doing it!
I have already written ten new verses and maybe one chorus.
awesome! turn that into at least 1 track, if not more. Build your body of work!
The wonderful thing is that you need to rewatch these posts. And then you can really get the emotion. This is more than just chords and arrangement. It is about love and instinct. So contraindicative yet so integral.
thanks for your kind words. When you love what you do, I guess it shows in your work 😊
Wow. This is incredible stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I use FL and FPC. I feel it keeps the memory overload at bay and I can probably do the same thing in FPC. At least I hope so.
FL is a great DAW for synthwave. What's FPC?
This is my favourite part of the week. The Synthwave Dojo.
