Dead Deer Just Apart of Management Unfortunately
Good thing I did my yearly check in the field. This makes it the second straight year of finding a dead deer in the field. It's unfortunate, but nothing I can do when they become injured.

    I’ve tried multiple different feeders until I settled with (Wilderness Calls Double D) the ones I have now. The feed must be kept dry. Pellets will turn into mush, corn lasts longer but it to will ferment and stink. Also, the feeder must be raccoon proof. Once raccoons can access the food, they’ll show up constantly by the dozens and eat everything before the deer can.

      I think adding compost would work. Full of organic matter and is really good with water retention and mirconutrients. Also humic acid does good with water retention. It can be tricky with hard soil from time to time. I know a lot of people use a water soluble version of micronutrients but I think the pellet form would be the better option. Its almost like a slow release to let it absorb a little deeper into the soil. If i remember right you do a no-till system correct?

      @@willietownsend3547 It just depends on your setup has far as your planting system. Im located in Southern Indiana and we used to see alot of spikes but here in the last several years not really seeing many now. Did have a couple of forkhorns this year but they were decent sized though for 4 pts.

    All good points, pun intended. I don't mind seeing a few spikes running around, they breed the does just as well, increasing the population.

    Thanks for the info was great knowledge i have over 100 chestnut trees planted and some are pushing 7-8 foot tall. I was thinking of trimming to 6 foot tall or should i keep it shorter for nut production.

    • @MonsterBucks1451
      @MonsterBucks1451 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @arroworchard1054 I'm glad you liked it! is your goal to make the tree bush out more, or are you trying to limit the height of the tree? I am not a fan of trimming chestnut trees back unless they're limbs that cross each other or grow back to the trunk. Limiting the size of the tree limits your nut crop if that's your meaning for trimming them back to 6 feet.

    • @arroworchard1054
      @arroworchard1054 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MonsterBucks1451 yes so what I did today was basically trim to a central leader to six feet anything higher I pruned crossing y or v branches and any branches that were not the trunk that were half the size of the trunk and also rubbing them let them grow outward but most mine were just planted so they became whips to get taller soon as they hit six foot mark I let them branch

    • @MonsterBucks1451
      @MonsterBucks1451 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @arroworchard1054 ok yeah, trimming 6 ft will be good for branching purposes. That should help you with nut production.

      @Andrew-h2g1t Thank you glad you like them. yeah, I have a Coyote problem. I would say based on the sound in the video, they were just across the road, which is around 200 to 300 yards. I will be doing a hunt for them soon.

    I plan on changing my food plot process this coming year. The backbone of my plots was oats, wheat, rye, winter peas. I lost a lot of seed to turkeys due to going so long without rain. However when my winter peas came up they were doing well. Then a week later they were all gone except in exclusion cages. Deer killed them. So i am thinking about maybe radish, clover, and chicory next year in place of the peas. I used 50 lbs per acre or so of peas and still not enough.

    • @MonsterBucks1451
      @MonsterBucks1451 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jeremysilcox9362 I believe that will help with your browse pressure problems. 50 pounds sounds like a pretty good-sized food plot. I noticed that since I added so many other species, it did help take some pressure off the peas, but they still can struggle from time to time.

      @@MonsterBucks1451 I have about 4.5 acres of actual food plots and a few kill plots in the woods. I planted 200 lbs of peas and 450 lbs of grain. Plots look great, but are eaten to the ground.

    What's your recommendation on the most economical way to purchase trace minerals for food plots?

    • @MonsterBucks1451
      @MonsterBucks1451 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @paulsell2438 I would try local places like co-op, Walmart Lowes, etc. See if you can find it in bulk if needed. other than that, I shop online looking for trace minerial companies. I have and will be posting more information in the community section to help find places that sell them.

    I have some rock picking to do myself. I did some right before fall and pulled out several good sized ones. I thought some of these may be too big to pull, but they werent.. maybe 100lbs was the biggest one. I line my ditch with them... opened up some surface area for food to grow. Im ready to get to work. I love getting a head of schedule. I got some fruit trees trimmed up this past weekend and a few things around the house cleaned up. Im ready to hit the ground running.
