Now that I am in hiding, I can finally relax…and enjoy me some vintage NASCAR, Southern Rock, and solid Toyota trucks 👊🏻
5th Gen Toyota 4Runner: Disappointing 3 Year Ownership Experience
3 year review of my unfortunate experiences owning this 2020 4Runner. Hopefully this will assist anyone looking at buying the last year of the 5th Generation 4Runner. And current owners who are still under warranty.

I've worked at 3 different dealerships and I know that what you are saying is completely true. I have seen so many people getting ripped off when they should be catered to for the amount of money they spend. I've seen used parts put on vehicles and they charge customers for brand new parts and they do nothing but lie and feed BS to customers because of seeing this at 3 different dealerships I refuse to ever buy new Beautiful looking truck though
goddamn, i was within hrs of purchasing a 2022 toyota certified 4 runner sr5 premium. like you i'm close to retirement, test drove it, liked it, was looking forward to use it for camping, cros country travels, etc. Dealership called me said someone came in, took one look at it and bought it. Thank god......After watching your video I'm glad they bought it....I know it's apples and oranges but i really like my 2016 honda civic 1.5 liter turbo, 175k of trouble free miles. I think I may go with a honda passport/pilot and stick with Honda.....Thank you for posting your troubles with Toyota / 4 Runner
I have a 2024 4 runner only had 3 miles on it when i drove it off the dealership lot it was smoking and smelt horrible. When I use my brakes it makes a wisping sound. The dealership said there was nothing wrong with the vehicle that this was normal and I would get used to the sound. Was even told to turn my music up so I wouldn't have to hear It. I drove a 4runner as a loner vehicle before I bought mine and it did not make that wisping noise. Really disappointed that I spent a lot of money on this vehicle and now I gotta listen to this crap each time I drive.
4Runners are known for their bad calipers and wheel bearings. The break issue you described sounds just like a bad caliper not a master cylinder
Why did you erase my comment now I think you are a plant lolol dare you to keep this opinion lol
Don’t author you know what cognitive dissonance is?
Wow “face down on Satan’s mattress” lol you need to use that ,in complaining to Toyota company . Either this : you prove this faulty dealer etc. and truck? Yes and lousy and dead wrong dealer, it must be called out to make you seem at most on the up and up! . Why are you not putting their name here! So hope you are not a plant since you are very good at scolding ( with humor and all this! )So with all the theatrics you sound almost now with this and all the grievances , yes that seem almost as a ( actor) like- a yes professional-? Compliment or truth lol
Why this three year warranty I only got a two year- please explain! Yes I did purchase a three yr. Extended Warranty. Now I am worried lol at 75 I only have 13, 887 miles on my 2020 SR5 boy am I going to put more on before 2025 and the end of my warranty, so thx for the heads up lol! . …I do love my 4 runner!
You are going to have those that can’t afford a Toyota -hating on it…human nature. Also those cognitive dissonance people that believe this, that they chose a different vehicle so definitely the best choice lol. Most Toyota owners will attest to it being the best hands down . Also yes my favorite mechanic SCOTTY agrees . Sorry you got a lemon and yes agree with most here- lousy dealer -report them !
You erased and manipulated this comment why ?
Haha...three different colors on this truck now! Dude, you're way too nice. Call this stupid dealership out!
There’s your problem…. You are using kph, switch over to MPH. That should sort things out!
Turdoyota has went down in quality
OMG, you poor man! They've put you through Hell. Just AWFUL!!! How much is a man supposed to put up with???? I have a 2023 OFP in Lunar Rock. You buy a Toyota to avoid going to the dealers service dept in the first place. I've been 'victimized' many times like you over the course of my 70 yrs of life. It took 3/4 of my life to realize the secret is avoiding the dealership service depts at all costs-so I buy Toyotas to avoid it! Well, from your awful experiences it appears that Toyota has miserably dropped the ball on your issues. I'm so sorry for all the troubles you've gone through. I would be raging with anger because my vehicles are very important to me-I'm not like most owners. If this happened to me, I'd be suing the shit out of them-and I don't care how much it'd cost me-it's that important to me. And the topping of the cake was the dent THEY put in it. I'd be in the insane asylum by now if this alll happened to me!!! You sound like a good honest man who goes through life trying to do the right thing. It's too bad your dealership doesnt' abide by the same attributes. YOU DESERVE BETTER! God Bless you and your family!
What do you want for this 4Runner? I will pay fair market price here in the USA.
I love my 2016 4Runner TRD PRO, it is bullet proof! My 2020 TRD Tacoma is absolutely reliable AF.
cheers to the simplicity of this guy
Thanks for sharing the challenges you had with your 5th gen 4Runner. Hopefully, you’re now in a much better circumstance. I was contemplating getting a 4Runner too as my last vehicle but then I decided to get instead a used 2021 Lexus GX460 last year. I’m glad I did that. The 4Runner and GX460 (having identical platforms with different powertrains)are both built in the same plant in Japan; so it’s not far fetched to think that the GX460 can have similar issues as that of the 4Runner. But then again, your Toyota dealer seems more to blame for the dilemma you faced. Appreciate what you do. Thanks again. 🇨🇦
I have a 2016 4Runner Limited Edition, bought it certified pre-owned in 2018 (was a prior lease at 20K miles) and have had zero issues in 6 years. Almost all your issues are the dealer's fault. My 4Runner has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It's paid off and I never intend to get rid of it. My only complaint is I wish I could have gotten it in the forest green color yours is, unfortunately it's not been a common color offered by Toyota. I'm tempted to get a 2nd one, a 2024 final 5th generation, and turn my current one into a road-tripper, they will both will keep their value for a long time and be easy on my pocketbook since most other cars end up with unexpected repairs. I would like to put on a tire carrier on the back since the stock spare placement isn't convenient, though I would keep the existing spare underneath.
Car dealerships seem to be trying to replace cable tv companies as the worst customer service possible. I made a recall appointment 8 weeks before hand with my local Nissan dealer to care for 2 transmission recalls...one hardware and one software update. I dropped the truck off the night before so they would have it all day. When I went to pick the truck up they claimed the part they needed to complete the hardware recall wasn't available...they didn't do the software update either with no explanation why.
From one Soldier to another, what an amazing Rig! We’ve all been there!
Wow! Thanks for presenting a thorough, fair report of your experience. I am planning on purchasing a 6th generaton 4Runner probably in 2025. I've been saving for over seven years in prepaation. Your balanced assessment was sobering. For what it's worth, this is the first time I ever took the time to actually respond to a report such as yours.
Well, as far as scratches and dings, I just learned o live with them. kind of giver off-road vehicle some personality and the fix is expensive and always issues the way things are handled. I just like the patina! and at the end of the day for investment People like when things are not monkeyed around with! But I understand the disappointments, such as life
You have some bad luck. Your truck seems to be a POS. Wonder if it is the norm or if it is the exception?
I bought a Brand New 2023 Limited in Aug 2022. Also Have a 2008 SR5 with almost 300k on it so I had No concerns about buying another 4Runner. This however has me a bit worried. I only have 8900 miles on the 2023 4Runner since Im still driving the 2008 SR5. Like you....I bought my Limited expecting it to be the last New vehicle I purchase before I leave this world. So far I have had no issues and HOPEFULLY that does not change however I am still concerned because I am sure the quality is not nearly as good as it was back in 2008 when I bought my First 4Runner. For one, the paint seems quite a bit thinner. Quality has declined ON EVERYTHING so I don't know what we can do about that. We are sadly at the mercy of others and can only hope that people will do the right thing. I understand the desire to not point fingers HOWEVER.......Sometimes - it is necessary. In your case--- I think giving NAMES is the ONLY way that you would get results. The Problem with situations like yours is that unfortunately as long as people are willing to keep buying 4Runners, Toyota doesn't see the needs to correct the issues. To this day......4Runners are sold out at almost every dealership.
I don't know, I'm on my 3rd 4Runner, first 2 I couldn't kill them at 200 and 280k miles, nothing but oil changes and under carriage suspensions at 150k Miles (normal, nothing last forever) axles on front on the second, equal to my 07 FJ they are bulletproof.
Sorry for your experiences
It's been a while since this was posted. I hope you're well brother. Cheers.
I’ve got the same one, same color. It’s amazing. I sleep in it, drive trails, camp in amazing places etc. pull a nice off road trailer with it. No issues so far. 71k miles already.
@@deVrieco that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Thankfully, everything has been just fine since I made this video last spring.
Would anyone recommend a 2015 trd pro 99,000 miles, dealer wants 33, clean interior?
I wouldn't buy anything else from that dealership.
So sad I hope it doesn’t happen to me or anyone else. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
That clunk in your brakes is a movement that happens in the brake cylinder on the passenger side of the brake mechanism. It does ,like you say ,hit the firewall. Driver me crazy. A simple fix is to put a pad between the part and the firewall and use a cable tie or wire to stop the movement. Sounds like that simple diy fix was not done and they replaced the whole thing improperly. It drove me nuts for a while too until I had someone hit the brakes while a watched the brake cylinder area (not sure what it’s called - master cylinder?) and saw it move. 2 years later and all is ok
I am about to trade in my jeep for a 4runner. DONT BUY A JEEP!
Now, if you want to trade in your 4runner, dealers will give you 10% to 15% less than market value due to the body work. They ruined you.
Body shops in North America sock. American craftsmanship quality for you.😂😂😂
First, your 4runner is a beautiful SUV. I have similar circumstances as you. Recently retired and wanted a solid vehicle that had a great reputation. I could have purchased the 4runner as you did but I opted to purchase a Lexus GX 460. Both of these SUVs are great vehicles and have great reputations. I went for the Lexus GX 460 because it has a V8 and a 6 speed transmission. The two SUVs have very identical drive trains in them if not the exact same parts. The GX 460 has a different back door - an older swing out version but with a lift up window. I also own an older 2006 Honda CRV which has been absolutely beyond great with very minimal problems just like your Honda van you had. I still have the CRV because it is one of the most dependable vehicles you could ever have in my estimation. I am just hoping the Lexus will prove it's worth as others have given testimonials to their durability. One thing I would mention to you is that there is an Achilles heal for both of these SUVs - the frames will rust and end up being destroyed especially if you are living in an area that is rainy or snowy.
@@ShawnWard-tp7cs yes, my wife had a 2004 Crv…same generation as your 2006. She got over 300k before trading in for the newer one. Still so many on the road 👍 I also love the GX460…love the Mark Levinson sound, heated wheel, the V8. I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to deal with the premium fuel at every fill up…but yes, a great vehicle. Thank you.
I have 2 4 runners a 5th gen 100k and 4 gen nearing 200k both have had zero issues other than normal wear and tear it’s unfortunate to hear that quality is going down, hopefully it’s not the norm. I wouldn’t buy the new model coming out until all the issues get fixed with all their new turbo engines coming out
Bro all I can say is never buy in Canada
What is the skull rear window overlay?

There was a recall for the TRD Pro Fox shocks. Just inquire about it and tell them it squeaks.
I wish we could find a way to get rid of dealerships just like Tesla. A lot people have same problems with their dealership. They just take money from you, and make you buy all the warranty that covers nothing, when you come back for service, you have to pay more other than the warranty.
For some reason this video is surprisingly soothing.
What a horror story! I purchased a 2024 TRD Pro earlier this year and this video has helped me tremendously Thank you for taking the time to make this video and I am so sorry for your experience.
This video makes me feel better about buying a used 2022 Premium XP package with 73k on it. Just accept the scratches it came with and move on. Also makes me happy that I moved wayyy out of the rust belt. F that salt and mess.
Bought a 2014 limited brand new. Have 220000 kilometers on it now. Not a single problem.
I've got a 2011 Limited with 230,000 miles. I off-road it quite often. Been solid for me.
Thanks for making this video and sorry to hear about your vehicle. You’re correct in saying the mfr. doesn’t care about you and it exists with most if not all. Yet that garnish piece issue should have been updated with a revision seeing how old this generation vehicle is. I will be cautious with even Toyota (waiting for a Gr. Highlander to arrive, but may opt for a Honda or Subaru or maybe a Mazda).
If i live like this my parents gonna kick me out like they teach me this to keep your place clean. With a example of dog, as dog wipe the place with tail before sitting anywhere
Great video Workmanship in America I don’t know about Canada has gone downhill. It’s too bad and these trucks are so expensive. They better be perfect and reliable and if they’re not, they need to fix it make it right. These corporations are making billions of dollars after Covid on everything including vehicles.
Thanks for sharing! I’m sorry you had to go through this with your 4Runner and Toyota. Similar to your thinking, and at that point in my life too, I was considering a 4Runner, buying into the “bullet proof” engine and longevity of the vehicle. Your video has helped me to remain rational when looking at the 4Runner.
My 2023 40th had a few very un toyota like issues. Brand new within 300 miles I had a bad headlight seal. That was replaced. I then had horrendous windshield rattling and nails on a chalk board scraping. That was fixed by the toyota forum, it was the plastic windshield cowl hitting up under the windshield. Toyota cut back on the sound deadening and it showed, I had to fix it myself. From new I had a vibrating sensation in the floor/seat/steering wheel. The dealership kept telling me " it's the tires" well at about 14k it got really bad and I took it into a different dealership. Dealer says "Oh no, that is definitely NOT normal." Long story short the front needle bearing was bad from the factory and was eating itself inside the front differential. Toyota paid 3k to replace the entire front diff as it was full of metal. I had the O from my toyota overlay start to fall off. Dealer fixed that. Then the grill OEM decal began to peel apart at a year old. That was just replaced. I hope It is good now at 19k. On your noting of a Jeep gladiator. I had a 2020, It was the worst vehicle I have ever owned and cured me of the NEW jeep bug, you think you had issues with your 4runner. My gladiator broke my heart, I loved and then loathed it by 20k miles. BTW keep an eye on those fox shocks. Friend of mine had a trd pro and they are toss away suspension. They failed so much he replaced them with KINGS suspension.
@@TopHatGent thank you for sharing your story. I hope the worst is over for both of us. Unfortunately, Toyota wouldn’t assist me with the Fox shock issue as it was after warranty, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind 👍
Wow! what a story, sorry to hear you have to go through all these unfortunately issue, I am the 1st year of the 5th Gen 4runner owner, I currently own a 2010 4runner SR5, I had a few air bag warnings and engine check light, but I was able to poke around and fixed it, engine light came on due to the lack of using it enough, because I have multiple car so I left it park in the garage most of the time so after I drove it a few days it went away. I don't have the rust issue due to my location, I am in Souther California so everything seems to be working fine, I did hear about the tail gate rust problem that other post on TH-cam. Toyota Truck and SUV have a big potential to have rust problem if you live in the rustbelt area.
