How to Build a Dutch Bucket Hydroponic System - Dutch Bucket Hydroponics
Dutch bucket hydroponics is a great way to grow large and long-term plants. In this video, I'll show you step-by-step how to build a dutch bucket system.
This system can be used both indoors and outdoors. If you plan to use the system outdoors, it works best in a greenhouse or in an area where rain can’t easily contaminate the system.
If you'd like to know how dutch bucket systems work, scroll down for a brief explanation.
NOTE: In the video, I refer to using 1/2" rubber grommets. I should have said 3/4" inner diameter rubber grommets commonly used for 1/2" PVC pipe. The link below to the grommets are the correct size for this build. If you're buying grommets from another source, you'll want to use 3/4" inner diameter rubber grommets.

❓ How Dutch Bucket Hydroponics Works ❓
A Dutch bucket system is a simple recirculating drip irrigation system. A reservoir holds nutrient solution. Inside that reservoir is a pump that’s connected to an irrigation line. When the pump cycles it pushes nutrient solution up into drip or irrigation tubing that flows into the buckets.
The Dutch buckets have a drain positioned about 2” above the bottom of the bucket. When the water level reaches the drain, it flows into a drain pipe and recirculates back into the reservoir. That 2” drain position in the bucket maintains a small reserve of water in every bucket at all times.
Coarse media like perlite works well with this standing reserve of water since it won’t wick up large amounts of moisture. This reserve of water in each bucket also acts as a nice failsafe to keep plants healthy in case of a pump failure.
This system can be used both indoors and outdoors. If you plan to use the system outdoors, it works best in a greenhouse or in an area where rain can’t easily contaminate the system.

Hi, it was a great video, I learned a lot from it. But I would like to know how the calculation changes if, for example, CalMag, Silicate, or Pro Bloom is added when using NovaMax Bloom? How do I calculate the EC?
I want to design a Fogponic Dutch Bucket system soon. Great vid, thanks!
Just found this channel why did you stop posting content.
Now I can easily grow my…tomatoes.
why do you need to aerate the water when the roots of the plants are in the loose gravel substrate above the water where there should be enough air getting to them through the gravel?
Since this system is so small, how hard would it be to add goldfish to feed the veggies??
How would one go about adding a waterlevel read to the bucket ?
Does the aeration throw out the pH of the nutrient solution?
Can’t seem to find the material list
Hi thanks for your very informative videos. I have one question; could you please tell me the size/demention of the O rings you used. I cannot find them anywhere at lowes or Home Depot. I guess I will have to resort to amazon . Thanks for your help.
I use 3/4” rubber grommets from Amazon. There should be a link to them in the description.
I would love to have the PDF - thanks for sharing.

Solariver had the perfect solar air stone system..a bit pricey but built to last. I am new to this and have invested in a solar water pump. I want to do a NFT system but am trying to figure out how to keep the grow tray from draining out at night when solar not running (I am off grid) I was thinking some type of shut off valve a nutrient return ? Any suggestions would be appreciated
Oh I am a year into this and am doing a successful DWC
@@DebPainchaud a flood/drain system may work better in the case of direct solar with no power bank.
All that money spent for that. Did you ask yourself if the juice was going to be worth the squeeze?

Great video. Exactly what I was looking for
take the video down there is no store wtf
If the air pump is higher than the water level in the buckets, you won't need the check valves. Save some money , set the pump on top of a flipped over bucket or box .
Anyone know a good ph pen I can use that's reliable
No reason to beat around the bush, would this work for cannabis?
Yep
Can't access your website. Where do you get your pea seeds?
I'm very confused on dli
I see you did this a couple of years ago. I was thinking of doing a winter project like this. How did the radishes turn out and what are your thoughts on this system now? Is there anything that you would do to improve it or do you even use this anymore? Thanks for your posts!
@@davidb7130 the radishes turned out great! I would add a fill tube to make it easier to add nutrients as well as see the water level.
@@HydroHowTo thanks for the response! I was also wondering if the smaller holes for the wick restricted the water flow And is it really necessary to seal the end of the wick? I would think a frayed wick would pull more water or am I mistaken?
Vega gt
Excellent video. Couldn’t find a follow up but seen in comments you said the radishes did well. Any changes you’d make next time to improve other than staggering seed planting? I only ask as looking to create for next growing season and want to get best start possible, thanks. And a suggestion, Would love to see more follow up videos of the plants growing and maybe even different vegetables to see what works and what doesn’t, as don’t seem to be many video available like yours.
Hey! I would add a fill tube to the side. It’s handy for filling and for instantly seeing the water level in the reservoir. Thanks for watching!
I had some spare 5 gal buckets around, so i got an idea close to this, but your guide is going to make it a breeze! Thank you! Additionally, your website seems to have an SSL/Certificate error and wont show, so it would be great if others can see the work you've done there!
@@joshuahusband4196 thanks for watching, and for letting me know about the error!
Do it
Why bother with the aerator? It's not DWC where the roots can benefit from O2. It's not wicking air afterall, just water and nutrients.
You can make the same thing with less tools, less time and less work. I have made small ones with 2 liter bottles for herbs. It's like to steps. The only tools you need is a 2 liter bottle, knife and nylon string or cut strips of a T-shirt. If you don't have nylon. It takes about 5 mins to do the whole thing.
Nice job!
This was really good. It came up as a recommendation for me after I was struggling to get things right in my system. Glad to know I’m taking the right steps now.
