The Rotuma Project: 2023 Virtual Tour Work in Progress
The Rotuma Project is an innovative way to document and preserve the remote, and endangered island of Rotuma.
For the past year and a half we have made several trips to Rotuma to capture 360 degree images on the ground and in the air. Using these images and a 3D model of Rotuma we have been able to create a first ever Virtual Tour of the Island. This is the platform which we would love to introduce to all, in time.
The project for a long while has been self-funded and we have invested alot of time and resources into this project. We were blessed last year in December to be awarded a grant by the ACP-EU (African, Caribbean and Pacific-European Union) together with SPC (Pacific Community) to help us with capacity building and funds for two of our past trips to the island to help complete this stage of the project so we could meet our launch date.
We will be launching the tour in Rotuma on the 25th of October before we begin showcasing the platform at events held at various locations in Fiji and abroad. We are hoping to use these events as fundraisers also to help keep our project sustainable as we work moving forward to improve and addon to the current platform.
Do reach out to us if your community would like to host and support one of these events.
Our hope is that by bringing Rotuma to you, we will connect you back to Rotuma.

It’s very rare for a coconut tree to split. Rotuma’s legendary split coconut tree reminds us of all Rotuman people around the world. While some of us have diverged from our ancestral lands, our roots remain deep in Rotuma. This image inspired the artwork on the cover of the book “Fäeag ‘es Fūaga” Rotuman Proverbs by Elizabeth Inia. Since we launched The Rotuma Project, we have heard from Rotuma...

    The man calling out the koua for your mamasa, short cut! Please, Rotumans who are taking up the roles as Mafua, please dont pick stuff from here and there and make up your own stuff, sit with an elderly mafua and learn properly! This is sad, most people today are doing short cut style with calling out the koua and paega. It is really disapointing to see such short cut. Please Rotumans, let us keep our culture and not short cut the calling

    • @TheRotumaProject
      @TheRotumaProject ปีที่แล้ว

      Kathy here, I'm so sorry - this was not the fault of the Mafua. This was a result of the video editing process to keep the story flowing but not the fault of our hosts and we will be more conscientious in future pieces as to how the editing process affects protocols. Please forgive us as we are still learning and we appreciate you taking the time to review. Fḁiåkse‘ea.

    Hey bula vinaka, I grow up in the village of Navolau no 1 in rakiraki .ra, but I live in Aussie most of my life for almost 30 something yrs. I still remember when I was young going to church every Sunday. When times comes for prayer, we always heard some of the elders saying in their prayers every Sunday, please God help Fiji and Rotuman. And I always ask my self why they always mention this place witch is really doesn't exist In my mind or even knows where this place are. Even my step grandfather used to say that all the time he pray. So when I grow up and hear the story around the village saying that Rotuman is Fijian. Oh wow, Rotuman is Fijian Hawaii and they belong to Fiji. Yadra from the brothers from the west.
