E6 - Does DISORIENTATION have to lead to deconstruction? | Journal of a New Generation
In this 6-part series, explore how we as followers of Jesus can respond and walk through the disorientating moments in our lives, in the complexity of today’s culture, by looking to the ancient paths of Jesus.
Kyung Chul (Charlie) Kang is your host for this podcast, joined by Dr Jason Clark in the studio as they discuss learning and unlearning as Christians.
At the start of the episode, Charlie shares his own personal story of an extremely disorientating moment in his life. From dreams of becoming a lawyer, to unexpectedly becoming a pastor, to suddenly having it all come to an end - how could he respond? In solitude all he could do was say, “God I’m here and that’s all I have”, and God spoke.
In this episode we discuss:
- Silence and solitude as valuable spiritual practices.
- How crisis can lead us to learn more of God.
- What does healthy deconstruction look like?
- What’s the purpose of learning and unlearning?
- How there’s more of God, not less of God, in these moments.
- The difference between dogma and doctrine.
- Finding space for honesty and openness.

Thank you for this and for exponentially broadening the definition of what creativity is! I kept thinking of the word "Participating" with God in who He created me to be. When Christ, Who is my life...! Walking in freedom...of what brings deep joy... I am being creative. Thank you for freeing people to know that in being image bearers we ARE creative.

Can Jason direct us to any Ignatious reading that lays out this process in greater detail. Something practical rather than academic

Alicia sounds extremely confused about prayer, which was a surprise given her role is a prayer leader.

"God doesn't run." I have a hard time picturing Jesus refusing to run, especially around children or his own brothers and sisters.

Thanks so much for your honesty in telling your story. I've been going through such a difficult unravelling season for what feels like ages and often find myself just lying on the floor unable to function. In fact that's where I was earlier today just before I saw your timely episode. Bless you 🙏

World spoken into being, the Living Word, Jesus Christ, Who creates all life and wastes nothing..perhaps "an encounter with God" is not the best expression.. Consider, God, Present- not an encounter, rather immersion, baptism, if you will. "Indwelling Spirit of God, my inhalation and exhalation, my rhythm and immeasurable heart", as brother lawrence declared, praise to You in my kitchen as at the altar.

Brilliant video for creatives around the world. Such an inspirational talk with thought provoking discussions. Such an encouragement for those who have never felt the creativeness in their heart. A very helpful and touching video, down to earth and real. Thank you for releasing this powerful teaching podcast tool. God bless! Best wishes from composer and creative Robert Steven Hunt.

This has been a really enjoyable podcast with lots of richness Charlie, thank you. There were a few points where I wondered if you wanted to deploy a big shoehorn to get Creativity into the shoe when it didnt want to be in there but you kept choosing taking it easy again which worked well and the conversation grew much bigger than the mere theme which was lovely. Maybe God's gift of wild Creativity isnt one to stay in anyone's box for long? Let alone lie still whilst it's described and defined? 😅

Hi Jason; creativity is important and an expression of Gods character and love. I felt led to set up a potter studio…never used a wheel…now I’m making and creating. Gods using it to touch others , saved and unsaved. The creative bypasses our conscious, we express the “unspeakable” in art, it’s great for mental well being. 🎉 Gill Terry 😊

Beautiful, illuminating & so helpful. Somehow I always feel that the “best” Christians are doctors or missionaries, and being a musician is less effective for God. Pete gave a completely new perspective on creativity - how we draw it from God and can rejoice in it with Him!
