(5) Playing Mah Jongg 4 Friends
Part 5 of The Absolutely Beginners Guide To American Mah Jongg: Playing Mah Jongg 4 Friends Online.
Several of my friends have expressed frustration at trying to download an app whether or not to do it on their phone or their tablet or their computer and what are the steps to setting it up and how in the heck do you play?
I downloaded the app at the beginning of my American Mah jong journey and I had no idea how to play. So somehow or another I taught myself and this is my video of you teaching the completely non-technological person how to set up the game and play.
I need to apologize. My voice is wavering because I am recovering from a respiratory illness.
In reviewing the video, I realize the first game that I showed you I didn’t show you how to do the Charleston so stay tuned because a little bit later in the video I go back through all the steps again.
I’m absolutely blown away by the number of people who have been watching these videos, clicking, like sharing them and subscribing to my channel! I’m so happy to provide these for absolute beginners in language that you can understand, at least that is my hope.
Please feel free to comment. Any suggestions you might have for future videos or particular questions you have about the game.
I have been working very hard at creating a fake American Mah Jongg card so that I can teach you how to play in the different categories. The actual card and all of its publications prior to 2024 is copyrighted. I cannot show it online.
I remind you, you must order your card through the National Mah Jongg League in New York . Other online platforms will often sell fake ones and you want the exact same card, the official one, when you go to a real game.
They will start taking orders in January for the 2025 card which should be mailed to you sometime in April 2025.

I love this video! Thank you
Love your dog in the upper right corner at the very start! So cute!
@@ChristinaConnor-m2e Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I had the app downloaded but hadn’t used it yet….now I have a better idea of how it works.
Very informative....thanks
You are a good teacher!
@@jonkiser Thank you!
Excellent video!!!
Love your video, but I have additional tiles that I thought were the flowers and you showed what I thought were the seasons.
@@patwerne8168 in American Mah Jongg there are 8 flowers. The numbers and seasons written on them mean nothing. They are just “flowers.” In other versions of the game the seasons and numbers may mean something. When you order a game, extra flowers come in the package. It helps to lay out every tile, each crack, bam and dot. Eight Jokers, the dragons etc. making sure you have the correct tiles. You can keep the extras in the pocket of your bag.
Thank you, your videos were well done and helpful. We hope you make more, suggest more on strategies.
Thank you for this video.... especially how to use the Swap Joker feature as I couldn't figure out how to make that work. I have enjoyed this series. :)
This is a major help in deciphering the card. I can't seem to find a group to play with locally so I've been playing on the Mahjong 4 Friends app using the NMJL rules and now I understand how to use the card a LOT better. I've enjoyed your whole series too. Many thanks.
@@GlennsCubingCorner Thank you I’m glad the videos helped. There’s a Facebook group where you can say your location to find groups to join.
I watched a educational video of Hong Kong Mahjong before this. I see they are 2 different ways of playing. I think the HongKong method is less detailed and easier to learn. I DO know that I might wait until I learn one style of playing first rather well rather than learning both styles when each is new to me.
@@temi4116 I think it’s easier to learn one way before attempting the other.
Is there just a generic set of score options out there that can be used rather than having to follow this arbitrary set that organization comes out with every year? IE for casual gamers just have 4 sets and a pair or something?
@@mafisk67 not that I am aware of. The majority of the hands are 25, as in $.25. The singles and pears category is always $.50 and there’s a couple thrown in there that are $.75 or $.30. It depends on the difficulty of the hand. However, where I play we don’t play for money at all so you don’t have to play for points. You can just play for fun. You are supposed to have a Mahjong card you can’t just make up hands.
@ Thank you! I thought there might be a more generic version of the game where you just had to have 4 pong and a pair or something. Appreciate it
@ Sadly no.
You r video is very clear and useful. Thank you for sharing. Should you mix matte varnish also with water? Would you use 50/50 as well? Thanks so much
@@ilanamayerson4068 I think it is worth a try to use the matte varnish at 50-50 as well. Everything I have found has been an experiment so maybe you could paint a small canvas and try it with the matte finish and see how that goes?
No CT
Where do you find such beautiful and wide washi tape? I haven't seen this type before.
I believe I found this on Amazon.
🇮🇳 Hello from Delhi India.
Hello! Thank you for watching!
Many thanks!
Great video!
Thank you so much! I had no idea there was much to learn but the way you explain this I know I will be doing well with lots of practice. 👍
You’ll do just fine. It takes several times playing the game, reading books and watching videos but you’ll find it becomes easier with practice.
This is a really great video - thank you!
😍🥰
Thank you very much for video.😘
@@yoginiya5246 you are very welcome
This is a great video. oh man thank you so much.
I am glad you enjoyed it. It is a fun game.
Learning now through your videos which are excellent! I have some questions about the cards. What part exactly do they play in the game? Are the hands formed solely based on the cards? Can the “hand examples” card that comes with instructions be used while learning? Thank you so much for your videos.
You can only win by playing the hands that are listed on the card. So you must have a card. Unfortunately, I cannot legally show any of the cards not even those from the 1990s on my videos so I am working on something that looks more like the card so I can explain it better, but go through the national Mahjong league and order the 2024 card. It will be good until April when the 2025 card comes out. Large online platforms have been known to print and sell counterfeit cards which don’t list the hands correctly.
Well done GBU all
Thank you for these videos. I got a set and had no clue on how to play. Watching your 4 videos helped a lot. We are still learning of course. Can't wait to see your next video. Thank you!!!
Excellent series! The explanations are clear and easy to understand.
How does one know in the 13579 hand. That it is 4 - 1's; 4 - 3's; 2 - 5's; 2 - 7's and 2 - 9's ?
You have to order a card. I am not allowed to show you a card because it’s copyrighted so for this video I made up the hands to look like ones that would be on the card. I am in the process of creating a fake card to try to teach players how to use the card. you would know which tiles to use because you would have a card in front of you.

...hola, desde España. Me gustaría saber si tiene usted un archivo para descargar o conseguir las guías, (TARJETAS MAH JOMGG)que usa en sus partidas para saber cómo combinar una mano de Mah Jongg. Gracias.
@@mazinger69cabuto I do not have an archive or downloadable feature to share my guides. This is my only website. I’m sorry I don’t understand the rest of your question. I’m unable to cut and paste to put your words into Google translator
I have wanted to learn for some time, but the beautiful tiles seemed overwhelming. I appreciate that you broke it down and I liked the quiz portion which helped reinforce the material. Thank you! I'll watch the rest of your series and hoping to learn the game.
You are very welcome! I’ve always wanted to play the real game as well and had no idea the game was actually much more involved than I thought! So I thought it was a good idea to do some beginner videos.
Now that’s it’s been a while, how do the coasters look? Is there any yellowing? Your coasters are fantastic!
No. No yellowing. They look the same as when I sprayed them. No chipping. No sticking. Thank you. I’m glad you like them.
Now that’s it’s been a while, how do the coasters look? Is there any yellowing? Your coasters are fantastic!
Tiles look like they did once the dried. No yellowing. No chippimg.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make these informative videos. I feel ready!
You're welcome! It’s important to play and more than OK to make mistakes.
Thank you for this video
From what I can tell in this video, every player will be playing their own mahjong hand? Meaning every player has a different goal to get mahjong?
Statistically yes. I suppose there’s a tiny slim chance that somebody might be playing the same hand that you are going for but with close to 1700 different variations that would be not a common occurrence.
@ ok great, that answers my question.
Another great lesson! Breaking down the card is VERY helpful. Question: I’m still unsure on the blue color. I’m following green and red, but what would be a good tip or definition for blue? Thanks!
OK, so the colors on the cards have nothing to do with choosing the suits. Meaning just because it’s printed in blue does not mean it has to be dots. The colors on the card on each hand designate how many suits you are supposed to use. So for example, if a hand is all in blue on the card, all of the tiles have to be the same suit. If the printed hand is blue and green, then you have to use two different suits, but it doesn’t matter which two.
@ very helpful, thank you! (By the way, has anyone ever told you your voice sounds just like the actress Kathy Bates?) :)
Oh my Gosh no. No one has said that. I’m very careful about how I talk. I’m working on sounding more interesting.
@@agould105 As a brand/marketing VP, your voice is fantastic! Kathy Bates is a compliment. I love her voice. You do a great job.

Thank you for saying so. I am planning on creating another video soon. Have you got any ideas about what kind of videos you might like to see?
@ how to choice the section? Thanks
That would be a great video! Thank you for the idea!
I’ve always wanted to learn and you do an excellent job explaining! Love the quiz. Excited to watch the rest of the videos. Thank you for doing this. 😊
Thank you so much for saying so. I’m working on video number five.
Any place we can print this information you are s howing on note cards?
I don’t have a website. I’d recommend that you try to take a screenshot with your phone. That’s usually what I do.
Best video out of so many that didn’t leave me hopeless
I’m so glad. It’s a strategy game that runs with luck. I made many mistakes when starting and was very frustrated. Keep plugging at it! If I can learn it, anyone can!
Awesome video...I'm a relative beginner but I understand the game and do alright, I'm just not ready for Vegas if you know what I mean...lol. but our group is growing and they place me with the very brand new people to assist and the card is the hardest thing for me to explain to others and this video is so perfect and thank you.
@@creecher44 I agree I think reading the card is a real challenge. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and it was helpful
Thank you for explaining the rules for using discarded tiles. I’m sure I’ll be referring back often.
I’m glad I could help.
Such a good lesson! I had my first lesson yesterday with a group, so I’m a true beginner. Your explanation of the card is excellent! And again, love your quiz to see if we’re following along.
I always like a little “check” and exercises so learning is facilitated.
@@agould105 Excited to watch your next lesson. The first 4 were fantastic!
Excellent lesson! I love how you give a quiz to see how much we’ve learned.
I have 12”x12” tiles. Any suggestions for a frame? It’s a wedding gift
You could find a 14 inch or 16 inch square of wood and paint/stain it. There are some really heavy duty glued to use. I’ve used a clear sealant to “glue” glass pieces. You’d need to attach wire on the back and it would have to be attached very well as a 12 inch square tile will be heavy. You could also go to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and see if their framing department could frame your piece in a “floating” frame.
Where is Part 2? These are great videos but unless unless there is a Part 2 which would presumably be the set up of the game. I am really disappointed!!
I’m not sure I understand. The beginning of the video shows how to set up the game. We scramble tiles then build walls to start. I hope this helps. Please let me know specifically what you’d like info on and I’ll try to make another video.
What? Copyright infringement for the card to play the game? How do you “replay” the game?
When you buy the card you use it to play the game. I chose not to use an official card in my videos. I’m not sure I understand your second question.
Thank you for your video. I have just one question. Do you need to bake when you use the triple thick?
@@GlitznDesignbyJohanna I do not bake it. I do let it cure though I would say a week. Then hand wash only.
