Amazingly, BWV 4 is generally considered either Bach's earliest or 2nd earliest known cantata. Just another example of Bach's supernatural genius.

Note that Bach's works are NOT numbered by the date they were composed, but by the date they were cataloged. Bach composed this around 1725, when he was 40. The earliest cantata is generally considered to be BWV 150, although the BWV 4 is an extremely early work as well. Opening tempo seems a bit fast for a text about contemplating death: « Dear God, when shall I die? My time is always hastening away “ The repeated notes of the flute that sound like the ticking of a clock at a slower tempo seem too fast. Otherwise a fine performance.

I saw a comment elsewhere that the 1st movement was too? austere. When one considers John 3-16 on which the libretto is based, we see that the starting point is our hopeless human situation in the aftermath of the fall from God's grace. The rest of the cantata is more cheerful since God's grace is so amazing & wipes our slate clean! (Tabula rasa) Soli Deo gloria.
