Have just done the trick (with success) for the second time, the first was just about 6 month ago, it was hot on the day it failed, so I assume the longevity will depend greatly on cooling. I am the lucky owner of an Acer 5920G so taking out the circuit board is very easy. Any recommendations on how to keep the grafics card cool anyone?

Thanks so much, I just came back from a store where they told me I was nuts to do such a thing. I got an MSI GX700 Megabook, disassembled almost everything cos the GF 8600M GT Card was the last thing u could reach ( who the hell thought about that....). Baker mode: 10min at 180°C, thermal paste after on GPU and CPU, reassemble and a sweat after, everything back to normal. Just saved me several hundred bucks ( the merchant was saying me to throw my laptop to the bin, well u can go to hell buddy....)

It wont last long...

I repaired a video-card like this the same way except. I created four traffic cone looking mounts to let the video card sit on which was recommended in the tutorial I read. And I baked at 200c for 8 mins. Then I allowed it to cool for 30 mins before putting it back in the laptop. It works still and it's been 2weeks and counting.

Just resurrected mine today :). 8 minutes at 375ºF (~187ºC). It actually runs cooler now. I removed the thermal "pads" and replaced them with new thermal compound. I have an Acer 5920g, looks like you have a similar model.

I have a msi gx700 with nvidia geforce 8600m and it died in december '12. I am afraid of putting the video card in the oven. I am afraid because i think that the oven could break the card or the card might affect somehow the oven. Anyway, if i put the card into the oven, what should i put under the card or should i wrep the card into something? Pleaaaaase help i.m desperate and i need my laptop.
