Why would it not fit if its a bolt on part? Im so confused. Im having this same issue with a "bolt on" bdl evb2sl. I have the standard collar on a stock 80" evo and 5 speed trans. Why would the spacer not be long enough of its "std" please explain.
Ok baby will you grab a small bag of ice
why does the spline washer go on first? what keeps it from falling down into the groove on the starter shaft?
Hello my friend, how much torque is the motor pulley tightened with?
Thanks, do you recommend the locktite for the tapered shaft/hub too?
So the picture at the start shows that plate with the 4 bolts being flipped compared to what’s in the video
Do you have a open primary that fits 1979 flh Electra glide?
Very nice explanation and information
How close should the belt be to the ring gear?
How many steel plates and how many friction plates go in the hub
You say torque the front pulley nut to specs..... whose specs, Harley or BDL???? They differ quite a bit.
Think real hard. It'll come to you.
The Top Hat which fits inside the pinion has the same bore size regardless of either cap screw being used, therefore it's best to use a small washer with the smaller of the two cap screws as the head isn't too much larger than the bore of the Top Hat.
Lpp
How would I remove the clutch. Hub? I have taken the clutch hub nut off even the snap ring that was on there the clutch plates. I have applied heat to it with a heat gun as well as tapped it with a rubber mallet and it won't buge. Any ideas?
I’m sure you got it off by now but for others even with all that loctite , the clutch hub comes off fairly easy with an automotive harmonic balancer puller and heat. Use a sacrificial washer on the trans shaft.
Just installed a new 3” open on my softail. I didn’t hesitate to buy BDL again, as my first primary belt drive was as close to bulletproof as they come. The new system installed flawlessly
What is the belt tension spec on these? I seriously can't find an answer anywhere.
Wonderful video
Hi,very good tip, congratulations, blessings.
Thanks for the video. But you should not distribute the LOCTITE at the shaft with finger! It is poisonous and should not distribute by fingers. Even it should ONLY use for the thread.
Hey can someone confirm to me that I can easily remove the stock 97 Softail Harley-Davidson chain primary system inner and outer primary case and install this BDL open belt drive system with no problem the S9 is the one that I got
Once when I worked on a customers truck I accedently poured red locktight into the engine oil. The locktight was in a quart size clear container and I thought it was Marvel Mystery Oil. Im a fry cook now.
Belt Tension?????
Superb.
Guys let me hopefully shed some light on the comments below. I use BDL products in my race shop and highly recommend them. I don't receive ANY special treatment or pricing from the company, I just demand and count on the best. That being said, to hold the clutch hub, you can easily make a tool from a clutch STEEL plate. Used or new doesn't matter, a new one is like $7. Weld on a handle, a piece of mild flat steel, 1/8" by 12 inches long and install in the clutch basket and use this to hold the hub while tightening or loosening. I bend my handle at a 45 degree angle in 2 places about 2 inches away from the weld to the plate. For the front pulley, take a cheap AKA Harbor Freight pair of vice grips and weld on each jaw a 2 inch piece of mild steel, bent at 90 degrees. I do recommend, 3/16" for this. First grind the ends to fit snugly into the grooves of the pulley. MOTION PRO also makes a similar tool, although I use the one I made. No question that you must use RED LOCTITE on the pulley nuts. On the spline in high performance applications, if you use the RED like recommend, a small amount of heat from a MAP torch available at Walmart is generally all that's needed to remove the hub. Hopefully that helps. SARGE.

ok,,so thru this whole video there is NO MENTION OF A TOOL,,,TO HOLD THE HUB FROM SPINNING WHEN TIGHTNING THE MOTOR NUT,,,, WITHOUT USING AN IMPACT,,,I just want to use a toque wrench not an impact,,its 160 ft lbs and I tried putting it in gear,,blah blah blah,,etc,,etc,,,
You don't actually say what you are supposed to do if you have splines protruding. Actual troubleshooting would have been nice.
I know it's a bit late, but may help someone else, BDL actually make a shim kit which contains five different thickness washers so you can place the required shim behind the pulley to move it forward just enough to prevent the nut locking up on the shaft instead of the pulley.
Why would it be different bike to bike if its a universal bolt on kit.
I’ll listen to the experts...Thanks BDL
That man talking is wink eller... I think he counts as an expert
Run out of jam for your PB&J? Red loctite.
Like others have said, you have to be kidding me with putting red loctite on the main shaft. No fkn way. How in the hell are you EVER supposed to get the clutch hub off again?! Heat?? What exactly are you gonna be heating? The entire clutch hub assembly, not anywhere near the main shaft. Stupid stupid stupid....
comes apart easy with a common harmonic balancer puller.
Do you need to soak the clutch plates in atf?
Hell no
@@Rokonroller BDL sent instructions with my 3" open primary kit, specifically instructing to soak or at least coat the fiber plates in ATF.
Love the comments from haters! Honestly just shut up and ride your ride. Nobody is out here talking shit about power rangers! Everyone is so butt hurt!
Make sure to loctite your splines and loctite your nut, you can put some in your hair, maybe brush your teeth with it.. red loctite
Redlock splines never to be stripped again!
Cool how about a rear chain drive?
How do you hold those pulley stationary????? - with the chain drives, I just shove a block of hard wood in the chain, but how do you hold them with no chain?
yeah that's my question tooo,,whats the answer?????????
@@billcarson6790BDL make a locking tool
I got three words that will change your world. Primary locking bar. Or make one
@@Joejoe5560 thanks Joe for getting back to me three years later, those are three words as well - lol
How do I get my inner clutch hub separated from the clutch basket? I have to change the basket (outer drive) because the starter teeth are trash. 8mm belt drive, electric start, final drive chain. Clutches and inner hub are fine.
You don't have to take it apart, Just take the pressure plate off and back the clutch hub nut off (it is a left hand thread, Use an impact gun for this) and then use a pulley puller to remove the clutch basket and hub all in one piece. Now that you have the whole assembly off you take a cut off wheel and cut the old ring gear off ( take care to cover your bearing and other parts from the debris the cut off wheel creates) Once the old ring is removed put the new ring in an oven and bake at 450 degrees for an hour and then quickly place it on the basket with the bevel facing in towards the belt and gently tap it into place with a brass hammer making sure it seats all the way down onto the clutch basket. When you know it it all the way down and seated let it set at room temp for an hour and put it back together and you should be good to go.
I have a 3" open BDL on my Shovelhead. I had to do some stator and main seal work. My question is that i have to torque up that front pully to around 240ft Lbs. So how do i lock the pully without stretching my new belt using a block?!.
exactly - how do you hold those pulley stationary - with the chain drives, I just shove a block of hard wood in the chain, but how do you hold them with no chain?
easy rider,, do u have an answer,,,cause thats my question too...
Primary locking bar
Bad ass great advice thank you
If it’s so “easy” then i’ll stick with assembly lube. Sawing off rear primaries aren’t my thing.
When I installed my open primary. I decided to go a different route. I have some anxiety issues and after a few dreams. About my clutch hub flying off and killing a baby. My choice was JB Weld for the main shaft splines. My Grandpa Jack always said you can never use too much. That's what rags are for. One of my buddies let me borrow his 4 to 1 TQ multiplier from Snap On. I snugged everything up till I couldn't turn the assembly. Back off the nut. Then retorqed it with an impact like you did. But, I connected the impact to the torque multiplier. To make sure its all snug as bug in a rug. Going for a ride tomorrow. Charging my battery tonight. Strange it died on me in just 2 hours. Hit the button an my lights get dim. Nothing turns and I hear a noise like EEEERRRRRR. So tomorrow gonna fire that bad boy up.
Wtf? Dude I hope this was just a troll comment.....
I think you two need to understand what a bit of humour is.. the fell a is joking for fuck sake
Good info on the install. My BDL front pulley seems to be vary tight when trying to push it on my 1982 Harley Shovel Crankshaft. Are there different spline geometries available ?? I don't want to use a Rubber mallet to get it on. Any help would be appreciated... BTW the rear Pulley slides on the tranny just fine.
That belt drive or a gear drive primary is what Harley-Davidson needs to go to from the factory. Why Harley-Davidson is still using a chain primary drive system with a totally new motor in 2017/2018 is beyond me.
War stock. Harley has miles of chain to use up before they replace it with something better.
I can't recall the last time a video helped me EXACTLY to what I needed to know. No BS just straight up knowledgeable advice. New fan for life, Mickey
the compensator nut not have a spacer washer?? what model and year is the bike?
I have a 93 BdL clutch basket a 66 tooth ring gear, a nine tooth pinion gear. Both are bad, I bought replacements but the new pinion is not long enough to ingage the new ring gear. Do they make a longer jackshaft than 4and 1/2 inches?
where can i get a part number to order ?
the transmission nut is a reverse nut dumbass
I am freaked out ! Why? The air hammer is beating the crap out of the bearings, Esp the crank bearings. Just not a good idea to use such a tool on sensitive parts.
do tou need to take a torch the clutch hub nut to uninstall
YES, I did
No, not in the original setup. But if you follow this genius' instructions, you'll need to torch the whole bike before things will come apart. The use of loctite in this... instruction video is plain hideous.
