Setting up and testing the President Grant in the Van
At last finally got around to getting the original President Grant in the van, I also put a common mode choke in line to stop RF getting back into the linear.

So I treated myself over the Christmas period, and the item arrived on the 2nd Jan 2025, so I thought, well, why not do an unboxing and get it hooked up. Also here is the frequency list for 11 meters from Delboys online page: delboyonline.blogspot.com/p/cb-radio-frequency-list.html

Great contacts on a very quiet 11 meter band
Great video Alan. I know what you mean about the WX, I'm waiting to get a newly restored M588 in the car and give it the beans but I'm old and cold . 73's.
Debs sounds cool. Love hearing other ladies on the radio 😎
She always helps me when I need it, but she isn't into it really, I've installed a CB at her flat, just in case phones go down and occasionally she will call in to theTC net, bit sadly she says she gets shy. I've tried to get her more involved lol
Hey buddy just found your channel and subbed. Quick question. Your ic 705 is open to tx on cb bands i want mine doing and on pmr if at all possible. Do you know anyone who can do mine please cheers.
Hi and thank you, I've got the icom 7300 if you mean the radio. And I bought it already open for the CB band. Not sure if you could do it yourself, but it won't go as far as 446 for the pmr. If you have the icom 705 isn't that for 2m and 70cm?
@ hey the icom 705 is for 2m and 70cm but also has the HF bands to. I think andy kirby on his channel opened his up to CB. 👍🏻👍🏻 Ps yes it will go to the 446 pmr range 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice one Al. Got the same radio from Retevis with vox. Only got the Diamond X 5000 on it and the range is unbelievable. We also have a 2m frequency that we use, the so-called Freenet Band. Have 2 radios that I use, one as a base and one in the car to be available when I am locally driving around.
Hi bud, its a bit quiet here on the 446 channels and as ive not yet got my licence I can't use 2m, but I do listen from time to time.
@@Al.26TC101 the 2m Band Freenet is like CB, no licence required. There are only a couple analog channels available, not like pmr that also has digital channels aswell.
nice one Al
Thanks Bob
Good seeing your setup ..think i have that same problem as yours with common noise on my audio and seeing your choke will have to try one out , just wondering where you got yours from ? 73's
Hi bud I got it from USA as I remember if you pause video when im showing the box there is a website on there, maybe someone makes them in the UK or you could try making one. Just an idea. 😊
@@Al.26TC101thanks Al, will have to do some investigation work .
Lovely radio the Grant 👌26at378
@@willytee585 Great radio and really happy with it.
If you plan to use the heater for stationary use only, you might look into the Diesel heaters. At one time they were very affordable but I haven't researched them in a while. ✌✌
@udx-483muddbucket5 Cheers bud, but im just going to get a cheap electrical one off amazon and hope it does the job.
@@Al.26TC101 Understandable. I know the feeling. With the divider , electric should work fine as long as it doesn't rob you of power.✌✌
Seems you have everything under control now. Nice set up. ✌✌
@udx-483muddbucket5 Thanks, I have been wanting to get this in the van for about a month now. I need to do a few tweaks still though.
Great video Al! You're very lucky to have Deb's helping you. I doubt I'd get my wife helping me for the signal reports lol.
LOL she is always quite helpful and she is very happy that I've got a Hobby I really enjoy, she will call in on the TC net now and then, but I guess when im out on the radio im out of her way haha. Cheers
Lovely radio 👍
Glad i got hold of one , difficult to find Cheers
Lovely radio Alan. 56CT004
Really happy with it Cheers bud
Nice set up Al, RM203 nice little amp got one for mobile when the CRT9900 is in the car Tony 26TG064
Cheers bud, just need the weather to warm up a bit as the last time I was out on the radio I got stuck in the mud. LOL, so it has been a while .
@ hopefully the weather holds up this weekend Al I have a new antenna to go up gone for a Gain master 5/8 as my vertical to replace my very bent 1/2 Venom the Yagi is on its stand due to the winds lost it due to brackets ripping out the wall in early December in the storms rebuilt now and on a tilt stand working well when last on air. Weather is crap at moment down here in WILTSHIRE 73 have a great weekend
Nice 2 see you again, I got a new radio now, got a at-5555plus, nice radio, 50 watt output
Nice good luck with it , Ive not been gone that long, just a bit difficult to get Vids out atm with the weather being so crap. Cheers
@Al.26TC101 yer I know what you mean about the weather, been bad here in kent so not much dxing happening, but did have contact with Germany yesterday
Yes Al it’s all working well I’m over the moon for you mate, because it was getting to be hard work with the amp clicking off, but you only gone and done it.and the uniden is working fine. Hope you are all well and see you soon. 💯💡👍
Cheers bud yeah it's nice when things go to plan, just need to get a heater in my van and for the damn weather to cheer us all up a bit , pretty fed up with winter now 😞 I think I seen you got over to Drew NY202 in one of his videos if I'm not wrong, well done 👏
@@Al.26TC101 yeah on a Sirio boomerang and a little kL 203 just like your one, and a bit of help from mother nature, but made it. Cheers Al mate and hear you about the bloody weather. 73s mate.🇺🇸🇬🇧👍
Good old vintage uniden radios work a treat built to last its the receive on them i love
Glad i managed to get hold of one , very happy with it so far, just need to get out and do some proper DX soon.
@@Al.26TC101 cheers, il keep eye out for more videos
Had problems at home with the swr, so going to put it in the car and doing pmr tomorrow night but will try maybe sideband and see if I can get up to you. Will have a good take off in your direction. Will have to use a spare battery for the 503.. But we have been out a couple of times this year and it's been freezing. But pmr is really taking off round here people coming from ham and cb because there is more going on
I feel safer with the 203p
Good to hear PMR is taking off, it's still quiet here, but I hope we get some more tropo . I'll be calling in on the Tango Charlie net about 7pm if you still up on some high ground I'm sure you will hear them, I get out well at home, but receive isn't so great, but I'll listen out , always listening on PMR as well Cheers
@Al.26TC101 yeah I will try boring field the place I will be at the highest point in my area so the I might just try the 203 as it's safer so hopefully being 88 meters will work as normally I just can't get you but 8 meters above at home
TC 101 hey mister welcome to the weekend Orn Rainmaker waving from NY 🗽
Waving a hand back at you. Have a good weekend bud .
Great video as I mentioned on chat. Motivation is affecting us all Al. You sound like me winging 😅. Next project for me to make that ferrite loop box. You're next job fitting a heater and silicone the antenna base yey have fun buddy.. kev the Brinklow kayaker 😊
Haha , its been like it for years , maybe get a new radio antenna as the seal has eroded away and just never got around to fixing it, good luck with the box , I'm sure its pretty easy to do. Cheers bud
Sounds Bob on that Grant Al, it’s good to hear 102 in the shack too. 😁
So far so good , pretty pleased with it. Only time Debs goes on the radio is to help me out LOL, she isn't that keen, but she can be helpful. Thanks Buddy.
Kind of the same after seeing inside yours
Hi Al. Just use a 1:1 balun

@@Al.26TC101 Do you hear the state side at night time on your side of the pond? 2DR707 curious!
@@levonsmallwood6078 Yes i did for a bit , but it does drop off as the Sun sets , depends what time you are talking ?
Which site / method did you use to get it to display the propagation information please?
It should show you in the video as I pointed it out in the phone app near the end when I found it while recording the video. Pretty cool app, but you need the app on your phone and then you can search for it and add it to the lametric home screen. Are you thinking of getting one ?
@@Al.26TC101Thanks Al for the information. I'll pay more attention when I rerun the video..Yes I am considering buying one ..
It's about 18mins in if that helps. Just making sure I got it correct. Like I say you conect to your lametric clock with your app on phone and then you can search apps, HF and propergation I think its called. Download and then set parameters on home page of lametric app on phone. It will make sense if you get one I hope.
@@Al.26TC101Thanks Al , that's really helpful. I'll check the video again.around 18 mins
Hi Al. Enjoyed your video. I liked your digital display in your shack displaying the current propagation information . Is it possible you could share the details of that and any links to order on line please?
Yeah even better I did a video on it which ill share the link with you th-cam.com/video/0km6qww1DIU/w-d-xo.html. Hope that helps not cheap though .
@@Al.26TC101Thanks for the information Al , I'll check the video out
Very impressive for back of the beam.

Its a 7 ele yargi that i was given for free , so I don't know make an d model I'm afraid , but should be easy to make one Cheers

Hi Al... Sorry to hear your back not good 😐 I know exactly what it's like I'm the same just coughing can start mine off lol😮 Be good to hear you on that president Hooe it's sorted real soon and you back in the flow of things. My antenna got through the night still high in the sky so to speak maybe slight bend? Just turn it 360 deg tomorrow and Sundays wind can bend it straight 😊 All the very best Kev the brinklow kayaker
Yeah really difficult atm to get into the swing of things, my work is not in full flow so I'm in and out the cold and I'm trying to make sure my back doesn't do what it did a few years ago, get the odd twinge, but it felt like it was going to go full-blown pain. and last time I had it I was knocked off my feet. Cheers there buddy and take care with that antenna :-)
@Al.26TC101 antenna on hold emergency dentist tomorrow a tooth has fell apart 😫.. hate dentists not as easy as a filling this one I feel my wallet getting lighter already..

The trusty old Antron 99 withstood the crazy winds up in N.E. Scotland, it was mad wind here
Wow, i seen the forecast for up North, we have got away lightly although another coming through on Sunday, stay safe bud .
@@billmorrison4746 same here mate cb antenna still up west Yorkshire been bad same one the 99 👍✌🍀👊
Hi Al yeah we getting it bad but up north there getting 100mph gusts, so we’re lucky in that way .but like you said we got to batter down the hatches for the next one, sorry to hear that your back is still hurting every now and then, because I remember the last time well the one were you were out of action for ages. And you even tried to go on your perch.and you were still in pain. Anyway mate I hope you get well soon before the weather gets better for work, I know what it’s like when you got to work outside but who wants work doing in the winter. Not many. Stay safe and well and say hi to yours and Henry mate and hope to hear from you soon your friend Alan.73s .💯🇬🇧👍
Thanks, bud. Yep, I'm trying to take care of my back and not overdo things. When I get that twinge, it starts to be a bit of a worry, but I'm making sure it doesn't get to that. As for the time of year it just gets depressing, I do have some work on , but it really isn't enough, also no heater in the van atall , so I'm going to buy a cheap electrical one from Amazon and hook it up to the leisure battery , might help a bit. All the best to you and yours too.
At least its not raining Al .. 73's CT5060
LOL there is that and that big shiny thing is out in the sky
Excellent weather to fly a kite in
And probably to fly a wheeely bin.
all ok in Tango Echo land in Essex at moment , no wind
Glad to hear all is safe.
@Al.26TC101 yes we missed the worst of it here, seen some had antenna damage up north
I've never seen anything like it. i managed a contact with a liverpool net on PMR channel 10, coming through about S6. they were also chatting to Southampton but i couldnt hear the Southampton station
Crazy conditions but was a lot of fun 😁
PMR is not something I have ever looked at. It sounds like you did really well for for direct contact using a UHF band that is primarily based on line of sight signals which have limited ability to travel beyond obstacles like hills, and buildings. Maybe it helps because the Lincolnshire terrain is fairly flat, and you have some height which will benefit.
Hey bud it was all a bit odd, someone suggested, the signals might have been bouncing off buildings and into the beam, as I am compromised here low down in Coventry even though I'm in a flat, it was good fun though 😀
@@Al.26TC101 Superb job! I must have a look into the band.
Great stuff again and again must leave a message for you Al. Because I must have forgotten to do that. But seen it before and a big thanks again Al.💥💯👍
Cheers buddy means alot that I have people enjoy what I put out, but hope it inspires others to come back and give it a go.
Wow iv missed this one Al and loved Alinco rig and mad to think this is 4 years .Anyway thanks again for all your hard work you do for us.and see you soon mate 🍻🇬🇧👍
Yeah ive been doing this for a while, but time flies when your having fun. Thanks Al I enjoy the hobby no i love the hobby and making the videos, but it does take time. Thank you.
Nice one AL I just use hand held for PMR, and I get a lot of schools and people at work. But like what you do keep at it and you never know. I've been very busy with trying to get my man cave done so I have a place for all my CB stuff and hand held radios. Starting to get a bit of a collection going now, still got to put up my astro plane, and hopefully we're have a copy soon, you never know as well we just seen on the PMR, hope you are well and your family, and one more thing lovely new rig you got and straight into the mountains of New York. Well that's amazing, right thanks again mate and see you soon Alan 💯🇬🇧👍
Same here Al, get a lot of businesses, but it's worth keeping an eye on what's going on there. Thanks, Al we are good here, just a bit of a slow start to the year atm. Hopeing to get New radio in the van, but might wait till it warms up a bit . All the best
That looked like great fun PMR is a great band to use there is not allot happening in my neck of the woods.I only have the wee quansang with the nagoya 771 antenna and had a couple of nice surprises with the contacts i have on it .
I monitor it every day when im home , but never had much come through , but its worth keeping hold of as to me its another part of the hobby to mess around with although not much activity around here unless there is a lift on. Cheers
Good copy on PMR from where you are Al
Yes Very good conditions, need to try a few things here though get my PMR antenna a bit higher 🙂
@@Al.26TC101 Yep, up on the roof or a long pole for all the weight of it.
Great stuff. PMR seems dead out my way. Perhaps I should try a beam antenna. What one are you using was it pricey and where did you get it. Cheers Dom, 26 CT4217 Haverhill Suffolk
Hi, the antenna is just a 7 ele beam for 70cm that a ham friend was chucking out so it was given to me for nothing, it has an SWR of about 1:6 but it works as I've made it to Northapmton which is 30 miles away and also spoke to a chap on a handheld who was walking by a canal in Warick, I was just lucky that day I was pointing in the right direction. Try making your own if possible. Cheers
Im getting the radio itch again, need to get another rig sorted lol hope you're well Al
Yep about time you did LOL I hope all is good with you too bud , and look forward to having a chat on the radio again
also i do 30km on pmr with my HT lol no problem hahaha
Cool when conditions are good, seems like a lot of distance can be covered on PMR.
there is a net going on on sunday on channel 6 in the uk i think
Yeah as far as I know its up north and would be a struggle for me unless conditions are good.
Great stuff Al! Next time there's a lift on, drop us a message and I'll try and work you!
Deffiantly bud, you will have to let me know where abouts you are so I can beam you direction if possible. I've seen tropo might be good on Saturday.
Hi Al , PMR is quite busy here , speak to Mr Humberside Airport and Rod every other day , lots stations go park up on the hills , it’s making a bit of a come back Around these parts
Good to hear that bud, i was hearing many speaking to others maybe I should get more people involved here, but it is a radio I listen out on and scan, but never much heard this way.
Yell louder AL lol
Haha i tried Cheers
PMR nice copies. Driven me to get pick up my walkie talkies and see if I could hear anything. It was dead lol 😅 Only spoken to 1 guy in Cornwall on my walkie talkies I was in Cornwall too lol. Got out to a guy 5 Mike's from rugby other side from myself and Lee in Hartshill not bad for a little handheld. I think I suffer on reception on it rather than transmit..... first time on PMR done ok I think... Pity I was a bit late to catch yourself next time eh.... kev
Great stuff Al! Its ben at ilkley moor i did hear you for a second speaking to steve. My best contact was to Lowestoft at 177 miles as the crow flys 👍
Hi bud , nice one , looks like you had a good day, I'm going to try and move out the antennas further away from the building like I have done with my 27Mhz di-pole , can be a struggle here , but more than happy I made the contacts I did . Cheers
@@Al.26TC101 Yes mate I did go up there in the afternoon and logged 62 stations but did work a few more, worked in to Ireland through the repeater as well so that was something new and did 187 miles through that.
