Pompey Chimes is a Narrowboat in the UK. We bought it in September 2024 and this our account of our experiences and adventures with it.
Small Jobs in 24 Hours on Pompey Chimes
How many small jobs can I complete in 24 hours on Pompey Chimes?
I fitted some new bins, put up two blinds, changed over the hinges and knobs on the kitchen cupboards, changed the hardware on the hatch doors, put out some new fenders and changed the rope seal on the stove door. I also drank beer and rum and had a nice relaxing evening.

Episode 4 - In this video I tackle the chimney. I didn't realise how rotten it was until I started cleaning it, it was falling apart in my hands. Nothing a few rivets and a bit of paint can't fix.........

Episode 1 - Picking up Pompey Chimes on 12th September 2024. Pompey Chimes is a 'new to us' narrowboat and this is the first video in our series of vlogs that will capture our narrowboat ownership experience.
Wow guys fantastic job. The ivory looks really nice. A total transformation. It lightens and brightens up the boat so much. I like the sage for the kitchen cabinets. Definitely the right choice to break up the ceiling. Top job.
Thank you for your lovely comments. You clearly have great taste :-)
Lovely boat, I’m looking forward to watching your adventures. X
It looks a lot lighter and bigger with the nice paint work. Do you intend to live on it full time?
Thanks, yes it does feel bigger and lighter. We are not looking to live aboard full time, but I would love to do extended periods of time cruising the network.
It looks it has been looked after. What an exciting time. Can't wait to see what you do with her. Stay safe. Good luck on your journey 🤗
That is a spot on breakfast. Oh my word, that is a lot of work you've done, it looks great! That really is good stuff
She cooks a great breakfast, best way to start the day. Thanks for the comment, yes a lot of work completed in a week and we are really happy with it so far.
The Rowbarge is fantastic - be careful entering the lock above though when the river is in fuill flow!
We had a walk along to the lock. Yes, it looks like it could be quite tricky getting in to the lock with the river flowing across the entrance. We will give it a go at some point.
Was the boat named Pompey Chimes by someone’s living in Portsmouth?
The previous owners are very dedicated Portsmouth football club supporters.
Progress is being made well done, slow and steady wins the race as they say youve done well so far keep up the good work
Wow, what a difference some paint makes. The boat looks a bit wider and taller and a heck of a lot brighter. I love the sage green kitchen cupboards too as well as the new chrome lights. I am looking forward to further renovations. I
Thank you for the kind comments. Yes we are really pleased with it so far.
Looking forward to follow your progress
Wow that has made a great difference, and like you say, starting to look and feel like your boat now, well done to you folks. And the choice of masking tape colour, well what can I say, 😂
Had to be blue masking tape......
Looks fabulous, much better painted. Ha ha if that was me Sharon I would have said the same thing about the jumper! You're both doing a great job. Best wishes Christine x
Give a man a fry up and watch him go. 😂
Best way to start the day.....
Good choice for the colour, as it really brightens the inside up!
Thank you, yes we are really pleased with it so far. It feels so much brighter now.
I don't live in that jumper BTW...its my decorating top 😂
Met this boat last year whilst cruising. Trust your a Pompey fan like myself.
Yes we are Pompey Fans. We were season ticket holders for 15 years.
Are you a Pompey boy?
Yep, we are Pompey fans and held season tickets for 15 years. We also live about 5 miles from Portsmouth.
Very nice, looks like a solid boat if dated!
Yes, it is a good starting base to work on. Just needs cosmetic updating mostly.
Play up Pompey
Pompey Play Up!!
Invest in a coal cage for the fire ...save money
Thanks. I have looked into this and will probably make one......?
Have seen this boat moored up where I live in handsacre by bridge 58 on the Trent and Mersey canal as a friend is a Portsmouth fan took a photo of it for him.maybe I’ll see it moored up here again good luck with refitting the boat.
Hi, I been watching various Narrowboat bloggers overs the past year or so, and started to plan out my fantasy boats, and Ive got to say the layout you have is extremely close to my design, question how long is Pompey Chimes
Pompey Chimes is 55 feet long. We really like the layout as it suits our needs. Just needs updating....
Used to see your boat when I was moored at Atherstone
Yes, the previous owners kept it there. It is now on the Kennet & Avon Canal.
Hi the brass discoloring can easily be removed by using Cillit bang then polish
Thanks for the tip.
I used to live round the corner from your new home marina
You could try to keep half the cuppard as pantry 😊
Yes, I have had another look at this and we think we might be able to retain the cupboard for smaller items.
Very best of luck and happy adventures.
Looking forward to following your new adventures.🙂
It looks better and the brassware has come up lovely. Once you have completed your renovations will you live aboard permanently?
Thanks, it came out better than I thought it would for a quick makeover to get us through the winter. Not sure if we will ever live aboard permanently, although I would like to do that. The day job is preventing it at the moment.
I went to uni in Pompey, many, many years ago (so yay!) Interested to learn how you came to getting a boat, and what you plan to do with it (live aboard/ occasional, keeping it in a marina / continuous cruising etc). I've only been to the Oracle in Reading as a shopper, I'd love to do it on a boat some day
Is it easy to find to place to moor the boat long term and is it expensive? t looks like an great way to go on adventures. I have heard of people living on them year around. From your narration it does not appear that is what you are planning on doing. Regardless, this looks like the first day of many future adventures.
Finding somewhere to keep the boat is not that hard. The closer you are to London the more expensive it is and it is harder to find a mooring. The northern canals are a lot cheaper than down south. Outside London in the south it is roughly £3k per annum, 2 or 3 times that in central London depending where. We have bought this boat for pleasure cruising. We still have day jobs that are not conducive to living aboard, but one day it is a dream of mine to do this as many others have done.
'Play up Pompey' , brings back memories . Regards from Gary in Aus.
Blue Army.....
Morning guys , just wishing all the very best in your endeavour together with your beautiful boat , I'll be watching from now on, I'm getting the bug😂😂
Thanks for your lovely comment. We are very excited to see what adventures we have on our narrowboat.
It's the best name I've seen on any boat. Does it have a normal horn or does it play the Pompey chimes? Shouldn't the red around the sign writing be blue? Quite a project ahead of you. As you say, in pretty good order, just a little dated and tired in places. I'm sure it will look great when finished. If you need any free painting advice let me know. (44 years decorating internal and external). Good luck. Subcribed.
Haha, no the horn doesn't play the Pompey Chimes......but maybe it should? Might be a future project?
