I always wanted to sail to Maine. I had been warned about the lobster pots. That, and the 11 foot tide, made it not so fun at times. Thanks for watching!

Crossing! Bahamas to Newport - SV Silent Running

After reaching Marsh Harbor, I provisioned and as a weather window opened up, set sail north for Newport Rhode Island. This was an 8 day nonstop crossing. There were calm conditions at times and not so calm conditions. The Gulf Stream gave me a push which adds to more miles per day, but up the coast of the USA the wind shifted out of the north and the Gulf Stream became a turbulent bathtub. It ...

We are very close to leaving the Bahamas. The wind was light at the start and grew stronger in the afternoon. The Little harbor I first anchored in was too rough. The wind and waves had direct access to me so I pulled up the anchor and went north to Lynward Cay. The wind was still strong but the waves were tame. Next - 8 days to Newport, R.I.

We are getting closer to leaving the Bahamas. I had to pass througth Current Cut on the way to Spanish Wells. This cut has a reputation for being very unstable. I am also a veteran. The flag represents the condition of our country. I never let it touch the ground. I have been respectful of the flag over the years as people from the top down desecrate it. Hold your horses. Just as the Star Bangled Banner made it battered through the night, tattered.... my flag is battered because our country stands in the balance. Will we survive? You look from the wrong vantage point. Sorry you disagree with me. We are still a free nation [it appears], and my flag never touches the ground. Sorry you are disabled.

    I’m not sure I would agree that 40’ is a minimum size. 36’ to 38’ is what I have read and been told as the optimal size. The reason cited is it’s very manageable, This doesn’t even consider cost. Once you go over 38’ the cost of everything is dramatically higher. Sheets, Halyards, Blocks, Winches, Sails, Anchors etc. The list goes on. It is a fact that the longer your waterline is the faster your hull speed is.

    • @svsilentrunning7559

      I know a gal living in a 27' and another gal living in a 28'. I see lots of boats smaller than 40 on the high seas... BUT.... You need to have storage and room for the basics. I see people STRUGGLE with all of it on smaller sailboats. I wish I had a larger sailboat! But I probably never will have anything other than this. More power to everyone that can do it smaller, but with some I think it is a continual fight to prove it can be done. Why struggle? I want 2 months of stored food, not 2 weeks. I want water, electirc, my dinghy hung with motor mounted. I have NO room for extra sails, unless I turn the second birth into storage. I won't do that. So... Yes, some boats are laid out better than others. I don't have any water jugs or fuel jugs lashed to the life lines on deck. Most smaller sailboats have 10 jugs topside.... plus all their bumpers.

    40 foot minimum for bluewater sailing? I disagree. In a capable boat one can sail offshore with a 28 foot boat or similar length. My Islander 36 sailed offshore and my Cape Dory is very capable.

    • @svsilentrunning7559
      @svsilentrunning7559 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can sail in anything. A 40' is what most captains would say. We are not talking, "doable". People have sailed across the Atlantic in much smaller. I wish I now had larger. Why? Storage! Hull speed! I am not interested in proving a point. I am interested in safety and comfort. I did my homework for a year before coming to this conclusion. My brother at 73 is a life long sailor. He slowly worked his way up from much smaller boats. Today he has a 40" and 42". He agrees with me and others that you really should be in a minimum of 40" for blue water sailing. Yes people do it in less. I wouldn't want to. I have buddy boated with smaller sailboats. I want 2 months food, and fuel, and more. I could have bought an immaculate 34 Tarton. IT was a great boat! The issue? Storage. Put a watermaker and everything in it and there is no room for a human. People do it though. Not me.

    • @svsilentrunning7559
      @svsilentrunning7559 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Been thinking a lot about what you said. I see smaller sailboats with 5 jugs of water lashed to the lifeline. I see the same sailboats with 5 jugs of diesel lashed to the lifeline. I see them with all their bumpers up top because they have no storage. I know a gal living in her 28 footer. She pulls along side now and then and I fill her up with water. I know another gal living in her 27 footer and I am always giving her water. My brother's 34 tartan was such a great boat, but he moved up to a 40 footer because he and his wife could only store 2 weeks of food. He wanted a watermaker but could not fit it in. He could not put up as much solar as he wanted because the boat was too small. So, to each their own. If you are content on a smaller sailboat, that is great! Some sailboats are designed better than others. My 40 feels inside like a 36 because of space used for the swim deck walk through transom. But I will state again, that all the captains I talk to say a general [GENERAL] rule is 40 feet and UP for blue water cruising where you are living on your boat. I would love to have another 8 feet!

      @@svsilentrunning7559is your boat a full keel? I have had this goal in my head for 20 years while I’ve been in the army infantry and I’ve saved money for 17 years. I’m now retired from the army for about two weeks now and can’t believe I can go do this after almost two decades of planning. I bought a full keel alberg boat because I could not afford a brand new sailboat and this one is in good shape for under 20k and I still have money left for refit. It is simple and easy. I hope it does not break. I replaced the main sail last year. The old main was easy to jam when furling. The sail rolls up inside the mast. There is barely enough room but it all goes in. It is easier to furl than the genoa so yes very nice for single handing.

I could charge 2 onewheels at the same time. in the first couple years riding, I was always stopping and riding everywhere, so I needed to be able to charge it in the car while driving. A 400 watt inverter charges 2 at a time. I have in the boat, a 2000 watt inverter. Solar panels charge the lead acid and lithium batteries. I have a hybrid system.
