I love that this video comes out after the massive amount of discussion and discourse from the Discord server. Can't wait to hear your analysis of it.
Oh that's funny. With the holidays I've been pretty tuned out of the discussions. Glad I stumbled into the video being topical. 😁
A great review video as always!🔥 I have somewhat of a different opinion on Seraph. I actually think she’s decently strong just not against Shadow Thief, Paladin, Black Widow or Artificer. The rest of the cast she can do well against.
A new build phase! I’m so excited!!
Do you ever play in the penultimate tournaments?
For Holy Presence is it 1 dmg for everyone one you have since it’s a stack limit of 2?
Thanks for this review! Your character-in-depth content is really good, so I'm glad to see my favorite hero added to the list. Couldn't tell you why she's my favorite exactly; I think it's a combination of her aesthetics and the status game she gets to play. Had an interesting thought while listening to your comments about Seraph's small straight. Numerically, it's very similar to Samurai's small straight - both deal 6 base damage with the potential for more, with Seraph rolling to add 0-3 and Samurai getting an Honor which is worth 1 to 1.5. And they both add 2 more dmg when they upgrade. They key difference, I think, is that Samurai is going to have extra Honors from his passive lying around, which means it converts to the full 9 (or 11) way more often.
Hey thanks for the kind words! Glad I was able to check your top hero off the list. Next up is SvK.
Thx for the review 😊
Thanks for watching! 👍
Woo! I've been playing seraph a decent amount recently, perfect timing to see if I'm doing it "right" 😂
If you're having fun, you're doing it right!
@@TheBuildPhaseyessir! I'm with ya on the flight 6's. Soooo fun when the dice are hot.
I played divine intervention in pvp, but only after my opponent played what status effect. It actually won me the game.
Wow. That's awesome.
That’s one of the only uses for that card. You either play it turn 1 in hopes to get value out of it before WSE can get drawn or you hold and play it counter actively.
Let’s go another review!!
Last one from S2.
Nice throwback intro 👌
Did I miss something or do you think basically that all upgrades are not very good?
Generally speaking, yes. I wouldn't phrase it that way though. It's not that upgrades are "not good." It's that non-upgrade cards are so strong. A card like Twice Ae Wild does something the moment it is played. So the pay off is immediate, and huge. Upgrades, even when they are great, are investments into your future turns. They don't do anything for you when played (ignoring the Black Widow exception). The time between spending the resources and getting the value is much more spread out and every upgrade comes with the risk of the dice not cooperating. If you can't roll for the ability, the upgrade is completely dead. Negative value. Now, while this is my framework for analyzing cards, nothing in card games is absolute. The correct answer to every question is "it depends." So while I do confess that I'm fairly harsh in my upgrade analysis most of the time, I wouldn't round that up to "upgrades are not very good." That's a bit too reductive. But, again, I do need an upgrade to be pretty profoundly good before I get excited about it.
I have 1 question. if you use your defense III and roll 1sword, 2 helmets and 1 hands, do you: 1. Deal 1 damage, prevent 2 damage and gain 1 protection. Or do you: Deal 1 damage and gain 1 protection.
So, if you have Divine Defense III in play and you roll a sword, 2 helmets, and 1 hands you will Deal 1 dmg Prevent 2 dmg Gain 1 cp And gain protect You get all the effects your dice can meet the requirements of.
@TheBuildPhase oh thx, I forget the 1cp too. Thx for the fast response 🥰
I really liked the Samurai the first couple of times I played him. Then I played against the Moon Elf, missed a couple of my def rolls shaming myself and got destroyed! lol 😅I dropped him ever since. He really struggles against heroes who def you want to avoid.
Vampire and Seraph was the very first DT box that I bought and thus began the addiction. 😅 I will say this much, Vampire is a very flexible hero so long as you know the match up and understand the game well. The heal is not always a trap. In fact I’ve found it to be very powerful in the mid to late game. The real problem with it is if the opponent lets you get the heal off, usually they don’t. Its either they WSE, Buh Bye, your Blood 🩸 tokens or they save Not This Time for when you attempt to heal. Now if you know that you have a very good chance of the heal going through with an ult so they can’t use NTT then I would say it’s almost always worth forcing it against a hero with lower economy.
Perhaps this is an artifact of spending so much of my time playing DT in tournaments and other competitive settings. I completely agree with you that the big heal is extremely vulnerable to the oppo messing it up and wasting your set up. And this is what happens the vast majority of the time in high level play. Not always. But usually. So, in my experiance the heal is a trap often enough that I don't even go for it anymore. Again, I fully agree that the skill of the opposing player has a LOT to do with the heal working or not working.
@@TheBuildPhase admittedly I’ve never been to a competitive tournament before but my play group is not weak by any means. I would suspect that tournament play probably shortens the game so you don’t have time to set up a heal. I’ll also add that ever since they buffed the BP to 3 dmg the heal is less appealing. All I was saying is that it’s not completely useless. I love your videos by the way and can’t wait for a Scarlet Witch analysis. She is my favorite and a hero that I think is slept on. Cheers Mate!
@gilbert3579 well, and it's probably fair to accuse me of a little bit of hyperbole in my videos from time to time. It's probably not fair to bring Admiral Akbar into this. Hehehe. So I'll concede that the heal does happen some of the time, and when it does, it's GREAT.
I just started playing Dice Throne for the first time last week when I got a couple boxes (Monk vs Paladin, and Shadow Thief vs Pyromancer) for Christmas. I am reallllly enjoying playing it and I've been trying to find gameplay and informative videos on DT stuff. Thank you so much for these breakdowns; great informational content!
And thank you for the kind words! It's really cool to know people enjoy what I work here here. Keep rolling 6s!
1 Year late but still loving this! Subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My favorite of the season 1 and 2 characters(mostly because I love pirate theme). I wish they released an alternate figure that has the cursed pirate in their skeleton form to use for adventure mode.
Does Ransom card gain your 2 cp points? If they decide not reroll
I have the leaflet from 2023 box and it states: Blood Power 2 tokens: 'Remove a status effect from a chosen player. This effect may only be activated during your main phase'. I noticed that this is not accurate to what is on your leaflet, but you said you had the updated one. Could you clarify?
Cool video
I really feel like this box and Lilith are very confusingly out of place with all the one of a kind cards. I think without money on the line in tournaments SAG can really cut loose and make some crazy flavored cards.
I hope this positive spin you're putting on the death of tournaments is borne out. That'd be a tough tradeoff. But it'd be something.
Agreed with all the frustrations expressed.
I'd love to see a video like this for the new Outcast heroes! 😊
I've got a few things on the schedule before I attack Outcasts. But yes. I will get there eventually.
@TheBuildPhase Awesome! I'm here for it all!
Another great review!
3 Ws in a row 👏
All 3 by ankle lock. Got the guy in the finals in the lock. But then I made an adjustment and lost it. And he was shrewd enough to not get caught twice.
@TheBuildPhase Dang, next time have the perfect Ankle Lock follow up queued up & you're Good.
Iam a bit late. But Ive got a question about the shadow defense : Does it trigger shadow imediately or do we gain the token AND avoid all damage. In the same idea. If we have a token, can we activate it whenever we like (most likely when someone is targeting you) OR once we have shadow we are in shadow until the end of our turn (In case we trigger the defense when attacked)
Shadows isn't spent. A lot of tokens are spent, so this is a confusion point that comes up a lot. But Shadows is different. When you have Shadows on you, it is a persistent effect that prevents dmg FROM AN ATTACK from being dealt. It doesn't get removed when that happens. It also doesn't prevent any other kind of dmg. So you can't choose to use or not use Shadows. If you're getting hit from a def ability, Shadows won't do anything about it and there's no player choice to change that. Shadows is only removed if you start your turn in Shadows and end your turn with it still applied. Or if an enemy player removes it or something like that.
@@TheBuildPhase All right. So, exemple : We play at 3. I don't have Shadows. Player 2 attack me and deal damage. I roll my dice and hit double 6. I Ignore all damage and enter in shadows. Player 3, can't damage because Im still in shadows, right ? Once I start and finish my turn Im out of shadows and Player 2 can damage me. ok ? Exemple 2 : I Win shadows with Shadow dance. I enter in shadows. Since I didn't start with Im still in shadows after my turn end. So player 2 and Player 3 can't damage me (Still can target). Once it is my turn back, when I end I leave shadows since I start with and ended up with too, Right ?
Sry Im not native english but there are not FAQ in my language :p.
@SynapsVI correct in both examples.
@@TheBuildPhase Thx a lot for your time <3
Huntress really seems kinda weak, Mira should be one of the best defensive tools in the game to make up for it but... she's not. The cat is a liability most of the time because to use it properly you need to rely on having her up but her most powerful tools require you to throw her away. She doesn't even have the resource generation to make up for it, meanwhile the best heroes in the game are pumping out overwhelming undefendable damage (pyro) or generating more and more power/resources just by commiting to their game plan (Shadow Thief/Cursed Pirate)
Very fair analysis. I generally agree with you that huntress players have to work harder than the other heroes you mentioned.
That "OK we'll talk about Barbarian later" was awesome ♥
“If you want to get good at anything you have to commit to sucking for a while.” That belongs on a poster, man.
Good vids. Can you do a DTA vid?
I plan to, yes. At the moment Seraph is filmed but not edited. Then Santa and Krampus. Then marvel heroes. DTA is probably next in line after all that. So it'll be a of a wait, but I will get there eventually.
Great video. We just picked up a bunch of Dice Throne kits and I was really interested in playing this hero. Question about the difference between the Treant board you have and the one that's on the website (Overgrowth is discard 3 spirits, deal 4 per spirit, and not 2 + 2x spirits deal 4 each.) I can't find an FAQ to explain why this is, do you know?
In my earlier videos I was grabbing assets off of the internet. My guess is I stumbled on an old version and didn't realize it. I'm now aware that the images used in the ks campaigns aren't always the same as the printed version. But I didn't know that until the errors were pointed out. Someday, once I get all the heroes done, I want to go back and remake a few of these that have image errors or where I make a mistake. But that is probably a year away at least. I still have a lot of marvel to review.
@@TheBuildPhase Thank you for your quick response. I emailed them to ask about the discrepancy too, because not only is the Treant's board different from the website, but it's also different from what's printed on the back of the Treant/Ninja combo pack, which makes for even more confusion. In addition to the overgrowth difference, the Ultimate is different too (Grow 3vs5 spirits)!
Yeah. I'm not super happy that these slid past me. My process on these early videos was to find the images, create the overlays, and then rehearse my analysis using the overlay. I never thought to check that images matched my physical pieces. I've since used a combo of internet found images and scanning my own stuff. And trying to be diligent at checking it. Mistakes happen. But I want them at a minimum.
@@TheBuildPhase Oh, this was not meant as a critique of your video at all. Not in the slightest. I loved the content, regardless. I, merely, thought that since this is some of the better content I've seen you might have insight on why the differences were there. Thank you for making this great content! (I'm going to go watch more so I have a better chance against my child when they wake up! lol)
Nooo. I didn't take it like it was intended as criticism. But I do also tend to be my own worst critic. Always trying to make the next video a little better than the one before it and other such clichés. Good luck against the kid! I've found I my own children to be quite formidable.
Kudos to Young Games playing Barbarian and Seraph against Artificer and Shadow Thief. That seems like such an uphill battle.
I've been using Covert Ops all wrong! I guess that explains why I dominate when I have a bunch of ability upgrades at the top of my deck, and fall flat when they're buried. Thanks for the insight!
Go win those games!
😥😔, I 25% blame MTG Universus Beyond, even though Marvel Champions is a thing
There's a pretty reasonable chance that it played a role in how things are shaking out. Yeah.
@TheBuildPhase people just follow the loud hype train, instead of trying something that's robust and very similar ...smdh
Great Videos thank you
Glad yoy enjoyed it!
dice throne team really suck at balancing their heroes
I do not agree with that at all. We've got 30+ heroes and a total 5 power level adjustments. 4 of which were buffs. That's pretty decent balancing.
They suck at delivering the products , the balance is far, its actually perfect by comparison XD
The SvK kickstarter delivered early. MDT was on time. XDT has been delayed, true. However, we need to remember that the fans voted to change the deadpool mini, even though we were told at thr time it would delay the product. I don't think we can put that all on the DTeam.
@@TheBuildPhase honestly I’m just a little mad because I was so excited to play and it feels like it’s been so long. But I did forget about it until the recent Kickstarter announcement. I just wanna play storm with the multiple dice lol
@shaunslays2151 I completely agree. I was emotionally crushed when the deadpool fanboi crowd cried so hard that they succeeded in forcing the rest of us to wait an extra 5~6 months. For some perspective though. My buddy has a ks project that's been supposed to ship for 3 years. I've had a multiple that had a delay of over a year. I feel the impatient pressure growing too, I have all the empathy for what your feeling. But even with this delay, the DT/Roxley peeps have a great KS reputation. They are literally the only team I've back on ks who shipped the project early (SvK). I am super dying to get my hands on Dice Throne Missions. So yeah. I feel you on the delay being kind of miserable. 😢
those damage numbers are Such a difference compared to the tactician.
Yeah. Although, to be fair, Pirate has pretry bonkers dmg compared to a lot of heroes.
This is going to sound weird, but this guy feels like an extreme version of the Samurai. The Samurai wins by having a dead average board and eeking out every point of small advantage he gets. Tactician's board is outright bad, but his game plan is using all of the tools at his desposal to try and swing things in his favour. This is why I'm not as down on Constrict; it's another tool to tip things in your favour. It chips away 1-2 CP each time, and probably forces the opponent to settle for a less impactful ability. Do I wish Constrict was Knockdown instead? Yes. (But try replacing all instances of Constrict with Knockdown and realize how obnoxious that would be.) This playstyle is actually similar to Geanstealer Cults from 40K. You take a bad base, give them powerful abilities, give them all the tricks in the book, and you still get about a 50% winrate when played optimally. You are doing a lot more work than other players to achieve a similar result, and are probably mentally fatigued by the end of a tournament. But man do you feel big brained if the game was at least close.
I agree with a lot of what you're saying here. I am a bit surprised that your analysis of Constrict is 1~2 CP each infliction. One thing that's been fun since posting this video, is seeing the Constrict enjoyers commenting and shooting dms at me. I like reading other folks thoughts and trying to learn from them. But I have found it to be a real struggle to get that kind of value out of Constrict. I'll concede that I was pretty harsh toward it in my analysis. It probably is marginally better than I made it sound. I haven't made it happen, but if you're bleeding 1 or 2 coins away from your oppo with every application, then that's actually pretty good. I agree entirely with the "weak board/powerful kit" framing. You're 100% that he's a a hero who demands a lot of cognitive load.
Constrict and barbed vine try so hard to effect the game😢😂
I do believe constrict being pretty decent if your getting it often I find the more I can get it the more frustrated.
You're right. I am probably being a little too harsh by writing it off. There are definitly times where it can meaningfully impact the game. Those times are just rather narrow and feel more like edge cases than something I can consistently rely on to win games.
@TheBuildPhase mid game it looses alot of value. early on it can hinder and frustrate an economy based hero possible. Also it makes the point of using your dice mods to disrupt them to make them spend that to rerolled or pull a card out of hand to mod. Very situation al
@@TheBuildPhase I also want to thank you again for this video as well!!!
@kameronbailey4710 oooh. I like the idea of Constrict enhancing the pain point of fixing enemy dice. That's a smart line.
Dude… pamphlet is A-OK with me! lol
It's very likely I keep saying pamphlet. It's kind of habit at this point. 🤣
@ Pamphlet, it is!
I like constrict. It usually bleeds 1cp and makes the ninja consider stabbing you for real after applying it 3 turns in a row.
I'll admit that I may have been a little harsh to Constrict. If you've found a way to use it that punishes the enemy, then that's great. My bias as a player is toward consistency and Constrict has always felt a bit unreliable to me. But I want to be clear, my intent is never to talk someone out of a play pattern that works for them. If you've solved Constrict then I don't want to discourage you, I want to learn from you!
Yeah, that! It is especially annoying for fighters that have hard roll objectives like Huntress, Krampus or Dr Strange. It is almost guaranteed for you against them to break their cp economy at least a bit.
Are you gonna preview the new Outcasts characters?
I've been mostly focused on getting these deep review and analysis videos out. But if there's interest in a surface level examination of the new box, I could do that. Yeah.
Thank you 🤌🤌
You're welcome! Hope you enjoyed it!
Better a small straight than nothing
Absolutely. Even a meh straight is infinitely better than saying "whiff"
Positivity is hard to find right now in so many ways. Nothing but love Ben. Take all the time you need sir.
We carry on. No other choice.
Can the reload ability be done during another player attack?
No. Reload tokens are for when the Gunny is attacking. They cannot be used to increase dmg her def deals, or to buff attacks of teammates.
@@TheBuildPhase ok thank you and I really like your video by the way 👍🤗
Aw. Thank you. That's very kind to say. I really appreciate it. ❤️
I love that you made this video. Really helps a lot! Thanks!
That's the goal. I'm glad you found it helpful!
Hey! im a new player about to get into the game for the first time and picked up the season 2 starter. I immediately wanted to main Samurai just because "he looks sick!" hahah. The takeaway from your video has been that hes going to be great for me to start on, but is he worth investing time in to try and get very good with? or will he always sort of pull up short in competitive play. cheers!
There's a lot to your question. Let me try to answer it in parts. First, DT is a very well balanced game. While there are some heroes who feel stronger or weaker, overall every hero has a decent shot at winning every matchup. The most polarized matchups in the game, like Pirate VS Elf, are still only around 55% favored for Pirate. In my opinion. I mention this because I think it's important to not allow the "torunement meta" too much influance over your play choices. Next, I come from a tcg background. And I have always encouraged people to bring the deck they are most comfortable with to the tournament. In my opinion, you'll tend to do better with a deck(hero) that you actually enjoy playing than you will just by playing the "best" thing because that's what everyone is doing. Every hero in DT has strengths and weaknesses. In the case of Samurai, his strength is consistency. He very reliably does what you expect him to do. This comes at the cost of flexibility. He does not have have the same variety of options as other heroes, so he can be a bit predictable. This is not a competitive deal breaker. If you want to pilot Sam in a tourney setting I think you need to focus on your game plan. You know what Sammy wants to do, so how does he get there in each matchup? I'd spend time play testing against the heroes I expect to show up at that event. I'd drill down on learning when the best time for each of my moves is, and get a solid feel for what cards need to be sold in what matches. Samurai doesn't have a "door closer" power. Shadow Theif builds to an end state then kills you with a big ult or straight. Pyro just races you down. Samurai is not a build up (control) hero nor a beatdown race (agro) hero. He's a midrange hero who needs to focus on decent dmg output plus decent dmg prevention. But let's be clear, all of these archetypes have weaknesses. A control player can make one wrong choice out of fifty and lose the game. The agro player can be out of gas and relying on luck by turn 3. Samurai is well rounded in his strengths and weaknesses. If you play to your strengths and know your matchups you can find success in a tourney setting. However, it is also true to say that Sam has some tough matchups where his kit isn't going to solve the problems for you. As a pilot you're going to need to stay calm and make some meaningful choices under pressure. Now, part of the Sammy's kit helps you with that cognitive load. By using consistency as his primary weapon, your choices will tend to be muscle memory. What are your goals in competing? If you want to just collect as many Ws as possible as fast as possible, then looking to the tourney meta could be useful. But if you want to take the hero you think is coolest and collect Ws with that... Well that's awesome. Arguably cooler than being the 1000000th person to win an event with Thor. In summary, I do not think you are wasting your time by focusing on Samurai. Every hero you learn makes you better as a player. Sometimes our goals for a tournament force us to play heroes that aren't our favorite. That's OK. But it's also OK to play your favorite even when it isn't "meta." Hope that helps!
@TheBuildPhase hey thanks for the reply mate! Really great response. I honestly am not even sure how many tournaments I would take part in! I just think about these things when picking up games "in case" I do hahah. So it sounds like samurai is a good starting point, and if I want to stick with him it's not a waste! Cheers for the advice
