SeMoJo Homestead
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ส.ค. 2021
In 2013, we purchased raw land consisting of just under 5 acres of woods. We cleared around an acre and in 2016, started the process of designing and building a home that would reflect us. After a year of fine tuning, we stepped into our little dream in 2017 with no plans of homesteading. By 2022, we were able to raise/grow about 80% of what we consume.
We invite you to join along as we cover everything from raising livestock, laying out a beautiful space, to growing and raising food, what to do with that food, a few “how to’s” and just the daily homesteading life.
Thank you for accepting the invitation to become part of our homestead family and we hope you find yourself coming back to visit time and time again as you get to know us.

Cornish x vs Buckeye? Cackle Hatchery for Buckeyes
Have you raised buckeyes?
Have you tried Buckeyes?
We have not. What hatchery raises them?
Seeing the care for these turkeys reminds me how much love and effort goes into farming. Inspiring!
I screen shotted the recipe , 😂 thank ya'll.
That’s always the easiest way 😊
Had a population explosion of pocket gophers this year. They did a LOT of destruction on 54 slips. Drought didn't help any either. Got some gopher hawk traps and on the hunt . Up to 9 😊
Uhg. Thankfully we don’t have gophers. We do however have moles which don’t eat them unless they are in the way 🙄
The cornish x share more with slugs than chickens. But they feed the masses. 👍👍 ya'll provide good information.
😂 I'm laughing and crying😢 at the lack of views .WHEN this IS the most informative video on the the subject. You'll did an awesome job here. Packed full of Intel. The 1st minute told an important story.👍👍. Most will say the ranger types cost more to feed ? But haven't seen a actual feed cost analysis. The Xs take away the feel good of raising chickens. IMO.
How much do you feed your big reds ? And how many did y'all raise.?
We offer free choice for all our growers while keeping them on fresh ground using a chicken tractor. We usually do around 25-30 each round. Hope this helps.
@semojohomestead do you always get straight run ? Or females? What's the difference in taste??
No difference in taste that we’ve noticed but there is a difference in size. Your roosters are going to be bigger by about a pound. Some places may sell them sexed but most are going to just have straight run for meat birds.
@@semojohomestead so do y'all get straight run, because if thats the case , males are cheaper than females and weigh more.woukdnt it be better to get males for more meat. I feel roosters are more tough. When grilled ,but in a soup it all gets tender. What your opinion on that,?
Males are the most expensive Straight run is the cheapest route and we typically get about a 50/50 mix. I haven’t noticed the roosters being tougher. We always let the air in ice with a splash of vinegar for 12-24 hrs to help with rigamortus and prevent tough meat.
Good meal!! I haven’t eaten Hoe cakes in about 20 years. My granddaddy would cook them every Saturday night.
Without curing salt have you had any spoilage?
This is JUST the video I was looking for! I was in the same predicament you mentioned of not finding any videos with the content you provided. Thank you 🥰
So glad it helped! Best of luck with your seed starting for 2025!
Brilliant 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Do have one that prevents leafminers in swiss chard and spinach?
Rosemary is a good one as well as onions and garlic. Both of those are good to’s for keeping away most pests. I’ve heard that radishes can also help but I think they work more as a trap plant.
happy holidays to you guys!
Same to you!
Threatening other peoples familes for this is the problem
Not sure I understand what you are saying.
I just did this with nearly 11 pounds of wild Fox Grapes (Vitis labrusca) from my back yard. I peeled each (no small undertaking for 11 pounds of grapes) and cooked the skins separately as did you, however once cooked, I use an immersion blender to thoroughly puree them before recombining with the strained grape pulp and juice. There are powerful antioxidants in fox grape skin, so I can at least pretend it's a healthy condiment despite all the sugar I added per the recipe.
That’s a lot of grapes! If they count ketchup as a serving of veggies then surely this counts as a serving of fruit! 😆
Love you guys!
Your don't add curing salt? And how many pounds or kilos can you brine with those measure's
Not entirely sure but our hams are big. An easier ratio to go off of would be your target liquid amount which is between 3-4 gal. The closer to 3 gal, the more concentrated the brine. From a what I’ve found, if you can let it brine for at least three days, that concentrate ratio doesn’t matter as much.
I’m really going to miss watching the videos. It helps keep us connected. Love you all so much
🥲 Thank you for your informative and fun videos; I’ve enjoyed them. And, thank you for giving me a shout out back then! I was so surprised!! Jeremy, my birthday is recent, too-November 15 🎉 I’m glad you were able to get better fast. Now, I’m going to go over to Facebook and find you there. Enjoy your family! 💕
Thank you so much for your faithfulness through the last couple of years. Happy birthday!! My Birthday is actually the 9th.
So sorry to have you "go away", but cheers and good luck going forward!
Thank you!
Will miss seeing you weekly😢❤️
Aw!! I’ll miss the highs and lows! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas. God bless
Thank you! Hope yall do as well
Sorry to see you go, but glad your leaving the channel up. And who knows what another season may bring? Blessings all your days! ❤
Thank you
@semojohomestead , I just subbed because of the big red video. Now I see ya'll are ducking out. Might be a good time to be gray 😊 thank you'll for the intel. GOD BLESS.
Thanks for the sub! We are still throwing shorts up on a some what regular basis but for now we are done with the longer format due to family obligations. I have enjoyed reading all of your encouraging comments though! Keep them coming. 😁
Life changes. God bless you all!!
Thank you!
guys I hate to see you go! I don't facebook but will pray for you guys😊
Thank you so much!
Sad to hear. Definitely understand though. I'm looking up the Facebook for sure
Thank you!
You also have a label maker!!!
We don’t have a Costco, so we shop the sales at the regular grocery stores for items such as dairy, paper items, cleaning items, and meats other than chicken. Because of our gardens, orchard, and chickens, we probably produce about 75% of our food. We also buy long-lasting grains in #10 cans from a bulk store (from which we make our own whole wheat bread). We feed our chickens as much as we can from our yard (plus wheat & some pellets), and we make our own compost. We still have a ways to go. Every year is a new adventure.
That’s great! The more we can utilize what we have, the better off we are
They _are_ called pomme(apple)granates(grenades) They are literally apple grenades
Thanks for teaching and am waiting for my answer
What was the question?
Hi. For years, I have used dry Bay Leaves in our 5-gallon buckets of flour. I break a bay leaf in half and put it in the bottom of the bucket; add the flour; then break another bay leaf and poke it down just slightly in the top of the flour. Then, put the lid on the bucket. I’ve never had any bugs in the flour. Even in the bucket being currently used, I don’t reseal the lid, but just lay it on top of the bucket, and never have bugs because of the bay leaves. Good job getting your buckets! I hope they do well for you!
This would definitely be worth trying as extra precaution. The beetles seem to be so bad here.
Also definitely need to do some sweet potatoes next year now!
Got my chip drop this weekend yay!!!
Cover you garden area with them about 6” deep and you will be good to go for next year!
i have never had any luck with sourdough it is to hard to keep up with good luck with yours 😊
I love these lil “take along” videos. I am wanting to learn more about sour dough and get into that. Can’t wait to see what yall have going on next week.🤔😊
Thanks so much for the feedback and encouragement
So yummy. Harvesting mine and they are huge 😂 thought u weren't gonna be able to fit in ur oven for a sec😂😂❤
Haha. It was huge! We are growing them for the first time this year and have a nice size one almost ripe
@@semojohomestead they are delicious. Imma make a pie outta one. And some soup too 😋
How did green grape turn in to purple jam.?
Good question. Someone else was asking this as well. We use natural, unbleached sugar. As it cooks, it gets darker turning this more to a dark greenish brown. The skins also darken as they cook. The pulp/juice still comes out that whitish green color so I think it’s just a combination of the first two things.
Hoping you enjoyed your great "guys 'weekend". Glad to see that you are all safe 🙏
Thanks you! It was fun
Is he separation from the skin necessary if I'm using seedless grapes?
Probably not. I would still try to press the pulp down as much as possible.
🦃
Enjoyed the kids interviews!
Thank you for sharing 🙏
