We sold up aged 44 and moved to Portugal in 2002. No plans, no destination in mind, just adventure. We fell in love with Alto Alentejo, bought our house in 2003 and spent 2 years renovating, exploring and just having experiences. Moved back to restore our finances in 2006, but got back permanently in 2013. We eked out our savings until our private pensions came in 2018. We've never been back, never going back and every single day has been perfect.

Everything you said was a lie. Expats don't feel integrated, they feel served by Portuguese who earn at least 3 times less and can not afford the rents under any circumstances. I live for 8 years in Portugal. First thing I did here was learning the language. Until now, I only know a very very few expats who speak at least a little Portuguese. My Portuguese girlfriend is often the only Portuguese in a dinner, party, gathering, etc... Only 4 years ago we saw many Portuguese, old friends... Nowadays, nobody, only foreigners, the culture is dying, the expats bubble is getting bigger and bigger.

There are all kinds of crimes taking place in Portugal. Why do people still pretend that Portugal is so safe? This is a fantasy of the Portuguese people, but is not as safe as they try to pretend. If you don't believe me, watch the news and you will see that something doesn't add up. Boa sorte!

The North of Portugal has many descendents from Swabia, Visigoths but not just. Vandals, Buri, Quads also came along with the Suebi. Most are hidden away in small hamlets and villages in the hinterland and hills of Portugal, where they hid from the Romans and other invaders. It's really quite amazing when I run into one, as there are plenty in the Minho (NE area) where my heritage is from.

The reference to the Fifth Empire appears in the Bible and becomes a myth through interpretations that have evolved over time. In Portugal, Bandarra (1500?-1556), Father António Vieira (1608-1697), and Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) reinterpreted the myth.

Estou farto de ver portugueses a queixarem-se dos ordenados e das coisas menos boas do Pais sem antes olharem ao que temos de bom. A verdade é que tivemos mta sorte em ter nascido em Portugal. Thanks for watching Jose and for your comment. I am not sure how you reached that conclusion. What I got out of this conversation is that Simone, who I'm pretty sure is not a cult leader or doesn't belong to a cult, feels that Portugal is a place where people feel like they have the freedom to express themselves and be. That's a good thing I think :)

What might be considered a cult for you, might be not be for many others! In Portugal we have freedom of religion whether you like it or not! It's very subjective! By definition the catholic church is also a cult and it doesn't seem to bother us! Personally I think Christianity has gone ashtray and I'm glad to start seeing people practicing advaita vedanta which in my view point brings a lot more sanity than other christian group, we even have a garden about it!

It's interesting her mother-in-law's name is Coutinho. I'm Portuguese and In 2017 I traveled to Goa with some friends. This one indian guy helped us at the airport and told us he had portuguese blood and his surname was Coutinho. Next day we find him sunbathing while sitting on his porch, on a house with the 'Coutinho' tile (in Portugal people often use tiles with their family names to identify their houses). So, either we found a relative of your guest's, or Coutinho is a very common surname in Goa.
