Investing in Nature at Oakland Beach
The City of Warwick is investing in clean water and outdoor recreation at Oakland Beach, thanks in part to a municipal resilience grant from the RI Infrastructure Bank. TNC works with cities and towns across the state to help identify community vulnerabilities and prioritize nature-based solutions.

Can Drones Detect Pine Beetles from the Air?

Southern pine beetles can cause heavy damage to pine forests, and they are moving into the northern United States as global temperatures rise. Scientists at URI are working with TNC to test whether drone can detect an outbreak faster than traditional beetle traps.

The first bird of the 2024 Block Island bird banding season was well-known to Kim Gaffett: a Yellow Warbler returning for the sixth time! First banded by Kim in May 2019, it returns every year from as far away as Peru to nest somewhere around Clay Head at the north end of the island. Amazing!

Volunteers: AAA Northeast at Carter Preserve

Four volunteers from AAA Northeast worked together to install bluebird boxes in the restored grassland at TNC's Carter Preserve. AAA Northeast gives its employees 40 hours of volunteer time off each year, making them a terrific community partner.

    This is wonderful! Love see the most beautiful bay in America being loved and cared for. What a magnificent place! Spent many years boating on the bay. There is truly no place like Narragansett Bay and surrounding waters. I miss it so.

    Was there any sediment removal or other site work done here? Was the channel reshaped with excavators or other heavy machinery?

      Hi - No, the stream seems to have reverted to the pre-flood channel on its own. We haven't done any site work, just monitoring water temperature, plant diversity and fish populations.

      @@tncrhodeisland That's great to have some data for dam removals without site work. There is a full sediment removal and channel reshape going on near me and it seems like a lot of waste time, money, and effort for little to no benefit. At least with low dams and lower order streams.

      @@PawPawKitty We just shot a new video showing the vibrant wet meadow that came up from the pond bottom. Working on editing it now. This is a difficult site to access with machinery, so we're lucky to be able to let nature do what it wants while we stand back and watch what happens.

      It's completely green now - filled in with 80+ different wetland plants of all shapes and sizes. We were there recently to shoot a video update, so more is coming. Thanks for your interest!

      No, but it's a good question. Will has gone back to school, but the coastal team will continue to sample and record data through the end of October. We'll try to get him to do an update after that.

    I’ve been trying to identify a bird that was on my deck near Atlanta. This one is the closest in appearance, but this bird was bobbing up and down while it sat on the deck rail. Ant idea ?

      Only a guess, but Eastern Phoebes pump their tails up and down and are more likely to be found around a house than a cuckoo.

    I only learned of the Praire Warbler recently, having identified it through its song via the Merlin app. It its a delightful song to hear, although I am rarely ever able to actually see the bird. Thank you for sharing this nice video.

      Cool! They are such small birds. Like most warblers, they are easier to pick out when they first arrive and trees haven't leafed out yet. Love that song too.

      Yes, Kim sets up mist nets during spring and fall migration in the same locations every year. The data set goes back to the late 1960s.

    drones are outlawed....anything you present is has no value sorry...too little too late i give you a thumbs down....(thumbs down readers, viewers) as the government has decided to support a law entered by a woman who has a vested interest in other company drones. while the tech is a great idea and i support it, using drones to do this might allow users to have a view of beetles who are just doing their thing like other illegals, and we can't have that

      You're welcome! Read recently that these little birds migrate at night and use the stars to navigate. Somehow they can account for the stars' movement in the sky. Unreal!

    Oh my that was so heartbreaking to see that poor little guy deceased. I know that it is the cycle of life but still so sad. I can’t imagine however, a more beautiful place to to pass on. He is so magnificent
