Thank you for this video. I was hiking on the beach of Lake Superior in Pictured Rocks and saw several doing this. I assumed they were dead. I don’t understand why they did not flee me as I was approaching them. They had plenty of time. Why were they standing out in the open on a beach?

Found an injured one while walking my dog in Santa Ana 🍊 California. I picked it up by its wings and it never played dead I placed it on a flower and next morning the wings were wide opened and it was completely still now I’m here to see if it is playing and I’m very sad to see when playing they don’t spread their wings 🥺

I've very rarely seen those butterflies. I mostly just see the Carolina Grasshoppers that look similar to those when in flight (hence one of their nicknames being the "Butterfly Grasshopper").

Butterfly bush is an invasive foreign plant that outcompetes natives plants in the wild and is not a host plant allowing our native butterflies/moths to reproduce. It should not be recommended. Joe pye weed, anise hyssop, NY ironweed…there are many noninvasive native alternatives

I was accosted by mourning cloak butterflies for over 2 years after my fiance passed way. I'd never seen one before or heard of it. I googled it by its appearance. Suddenly they were spiraling around me when walking our dog, going out onto my deck, the first one landed on my deck when i was crying.believe me when I tell you also, they would find me everywhere! They would land on the parking lot, the sidewalk, on and on. Spiral around me sometimes from feet to head. That was 9 years ago. Now my father died 3 months ago, I have not seen those butterflies in years. I'm in the same area out in nature as always. Yesterday while walking the dog 2 of them accosted us , flew around us and landed and sat on the sidewalk several times and followed us. 😮

I work in a childcare center and everyone knows I love bugs, especially moths. Last week I got a call in the staff lounge from one of our teachers to come to her room. One of these moths was outside the window, just hanging out. It had looked injured so I went to take a look at it, and it took a few minutes before it would start to move. It crawled all over me, until it decided to take off. When I turned back around, I saw her eggs on the window sill. I took 5 out of seven of them home. I’m waiting on them to hatch now. I’m on day 5. Waiting for 5 more days, then I know they will hatch.

I have an injured butterfly and I tried one of these and it worked! I have trouble holding her as she only has one wing and three legs and the only wing she has is damaged. I am now able to safely help her from the healthy butterflies trying to play with her and being able to feed her. Thank you!

BACK IN 1960 AS A 10 YR. OLD LIVING IN SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA., I GATHERED TOGETHER HEAPS OF MOURNING CLOAK CATERPILLARS AND PUT THEM INTO A TERRARIUM AND FED THEM LOTS OF THE WILLOW LEAVES FROM THE TREE I HAD FOUND THEM ON...SO MANY WERE IN THERE THAT I COULD ACTUALLY HEAR THEM EATING! WATCHED THE ENTIRE METAMORPHOSIS PROCESS AND WHEN THEY EMERGED FROM THEIR COCOONS, THEY WOULD FEARLESSLY CLIMB ONTO MY HAND...I WOULD THEN SIT ON THE FRONT PORCH STEPS AND WATCH AS THEY PUMPED UP THEIR WINGS IN THE SUNLIGHT AND THEN FLEW AWAY. SIGH. ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE MEMORIES! WANTED TO BE AN ENTOMOLOGIST, BUT MY MATH SKILLS SUCKED, SO NEVER HAPPENED. LOVE YOUR VIDEO BTW!

Thanks for this info. I am raising monarchs but the problem is when I bring the cage outside and open the door, the butterfly doesn’t leave. He will go try and hide in the corner. He’s not sick or anything and he can fly in the cage. Now he just needs to fly away and enjoy his life.
