The old historical books and medical books discussed different levels of doctoring and compared the body to a country. All of the texts translated here are from a thousand years ago or earlier. Some of the themes: -Medicine and statecraft have common techniques. - As a government official, you can promote health for the masses; as a doctor, you can promote health for individuals. Both are virtu...

      If I found cases, I would be excited to do that. Unfortunately, I haven't found them. especially not in any ancient medical books. Matthew Sommer (an academic) is writing a book about it. His books are amazing. And of course, there are a few historical stories, like the cut sleeve. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huang_Jiulang en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dong_Xian en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_China

    Hey Lorraine! Great video. I’ve recently been having patients pressure cook herbs for external application. For example Instant pot. Have you tried this? If so, any insights you have here, based on all your processing experience 🙂Thank you!

    • @LorraineWilcox

      Yeah, I use the instant pot to cook herbs sometimes. Not as good for highly aromatic herbs or delicate herbs because the the heat and pressure, but very useful for most decoctions. Do you have a specific question?

    • @megan.136

      Yes! I can usually get two uses of herbs when cooked on stove top. For pressure cooker, I am assuming only one use is best? For herbs like Bo he, Jing jie, Jin yin hua - I do include these in formulas with pressure cooker. I don’t want to over complicate the process (for compliance) do you have any sense of how much of a detriment this is to volatile compounds / suggestions on how to handle. Also, do you think pressure cooker is more potent than stove top? This is why I started using it in the first place. Thank you!!

    • @LorraineWilcox

      In the pressure cooker, the liquid doesn't get cooked down, so after soaking the herbs, add in the amount of liquid you want to end up with. If you would cook it twice on the stovetop, add enough liquid for two cookings, It is easier to explain with an example. Let's say you want to cook herbs on the stovetop and so you add two cups of water and cook it down to 1.5 cups. Then you cook it a second time to get another 1.5 cups. In this case, after soaking the herbs (because they absorb water), have three cups of water in the pressure cooker, but only cook it once. I hope that is clear.

    • @LorraineWilcox

      I don't know what to say about the delicate herbs. You can either over-cook them in the pressure cooker, or add them in to steep after the pressure is down enough to open it. Neither solution is probably ideal.

    • @LorraineWilcox

      One thought... you could add the delicate herbs in after cooking in granule form. Not saying I love this idea, but it might be worth an experiment.

    Thanks! I really love to look at the underlying patterns of the early heaven and post heaven sequence in the ba gua, can you explain how the two sequences relate, and how that interrelates with medical theory?

    • @LorraineWilcox

      Haha, cannot explain anything like that in a comment here. It is too broad a question. But basically, the two sequences are used for different things. Post-heaven is used for doing stuff in the real world, for example setting up a grave or house (fengshui). Pre-heaven is often used for talismans or things that are timeless. Of course, there are exceptions. The trigrams are like a deck of cards. Just like different card games have different rules, so do different uses of the trigrams. Sometimes pre-and post-heaven are superimposed on each other, but mostly each has ways it is used. and not both at the same time. In medicine, we would tend to favor post-heaven as disease happens within time and space.

    • @tanyaallen2664

      Thank you that was a wonderful explanation. Its almost like the pre-heaven describes another dimension with slightly differ laws. Sometimes I wonder if referring to the pre-heaven sequence might be useful related to the Qi Jing Ba mai.

    • @LorraineWilcox

      There are two methods that use time to select the opening points of the 8EV. These 8 points are associated with the 8 trigrams, but those two ancient methods use the post heaven order. I think seeing the 8EV as pre-heaven is more influenced by some modern teachers in the west, like Jeffrey Yuan. While of course chong and ren have some pre-heaven aspects, not all 8 do, if you read between the lines in the old books. For example, what do the qiao and wei vessels have to do with pre-heaven? Nothing in the old books.
