I went from Broke English Teacher to Full-Time Software Engineer in Japan. I had ZERO programming skills and within 2 years I was able to start my new life as a Software Engineer/Web Developer
(I took a 6-month detour, to learn Shopify development and try running my own e-commerce store)
Connect with me so I can help you:
1. Learn to code / take your next step in learning
2. Get your first Tech job / freelancing gig
3. Spend at least a few years in the industry and get that $100,000 salary
Keep in mind some people with CS degrees start out higher than that right out of college so this isn't such a high goal in the tech industry.

Iam learning web development .. Scope in this domain..? please tell me brother.. How to get remote.. Job.?
I don't know...I didn't specifically search for remote jobs. This was just the one I found. Are you trying to get a job in Japan or just anywhere?
@WebDevJapan ok bro best one web development and ui ux any one tell bro.?
Thanks for advice'
No problem, hope it helps!
Comfy video though
Are PHP developers still popular and in demand in Japan?
Yes, I see a lot of PHP roles. I don't know much about it but it seems to be associated with legacy systems and there are A LOT of outdated systems in Japan. I mean, did you see the news where a local government office just made the switch away from floppy disks recently? I even see COBOL jobs. The main project we are working on where I work is migrating an old system built in COBOL over into Next.js and TypeScript.
@@WebDevJapan how about Japanese language?
@@LEMPERBRO It depends on the company. A lot of jobs in Japan will require some Japanese language. The ones that don't are typically looking for senior level or at least people who can work independently.
Hey! Thank you for the interesting video Maybe you know some Python channels with content similar to yours? (real word project/code) or maybe people here know?
Thanks! I'm not sure when it comes to anything not JavaScript related. That's all I focused on. Maybe try asking in my Discord? Or other Discords.
@@WebDevJapanI will definitely do it !
I am very interested but still unsure where to start. I am a junior programmer from Indonesia with experience in JavaScript, and I am currently focusing on learning Go. 🚀 This video really inspires me. Thank you, and nice to meet you!
Thanks for stopping by my channel! If you type "IT jobs in Japan for foreigners" into Google there are many websites that appear. Most of them are good. I've seen people get job offers from basically every website on the first page of results. I just noticed one I didn't look at before, called Git Tap. That will be the next one I try out (not looking for myself but just trying to find the best ways for other people to get a tech job over here).
5:31 bro that's guy AF
Do you speak japanese? to be hired in that company
I do, yes. I've been in Japan for 8+ years. But It's possible to get a job here even without Japanese language ability, if you have the tech skills.
@WebDevJapan Thank you for the info bro. I am here in Japan right now, but I am having a problem in applying for a position for a semiconductor industry. By the way, thanks again ❤️ I'll subscribe you since I will also start studying python and add it to my skills ❤️
5:54 my dev experience summed up 🤣
I think that's just what being a dev is lol
My new company is going to give me infinite amount of money for books. I will buy this book for sure!
That is awesome! I can get one book a month. Take advantage of all your stipends/allowances, etc.

@@WebDevJapan Exstension?
as a senior full stack engineer, your work ethic is better than mine! lol. I used to be like this, but now I'm more of a type of "I know how to do pretty much everything and can get pretty much anything done in a couple days", so I'll procrastinate and not show 100% in hopes that it won't be expected constantly. So I show about 50% and leave room for those 80-100% effort grinds so the company isn't on my ass all the time and thinks I'm above average but not 10x like I actually can be. I leave my 10x efforts for my personal grinds.
Thank you for the kind words and valuable information from a senior dev. I definitely have slack off days where I just use Chat GPT but I won't increase my skills like that so I try to do it the right way as much as possible.
So your main task that day, was that so the English and Japanese language worked properly, like the English language when you switch to it, and then when you go to other page it will go back to original language, so your main task was make it working right? Sorry i just didn't understood most of what was in the video😂. I'm just starting to learn to code
Yes, pretty much! I had done most of the implementation for the language toggle the day before so I was working out the bugs during the day when I made this video.
mann that's so cool to see someone refactoring etc without Ai. i'm student and i used to Ai rn. Hope i can do it like u
I use AI a lot. It just depends on my mood and if the task is urgent or not. But I like to do it the old fashioned way as much as possible.
@@WebDevJapan noted! i'll keep practicing and i hope i can find my roles. i just can't find out yet where i want to be, is it android, web or something like that
Nice! Can't wit until my first day!
When will it be?
am currntly learning programming, do i will live like that someday :)
Yes, you can. It's possible for anyone if you work hard and SMART
@@WebDevJapan C++ OOP Data Structure Algorithm Desgin Pattrens -------------- Am Currntly learning OOP :D what you think i got frustrated when i see job requierments ask for like 4 Programming language like React + Nodjs + Go and some weird stuff i have no clue about it i feel like i need 10 more years Damn
@@selmanhisoka1457 I went from zero knowledge of programming to full-time job in 2 years. Some people do it faster. Some take longer. My main language was JavaScript. So, learning React and Node js wasn't hard. React is just a library for JavaScript and Node js is just an environment to use JavaScript on the back end. Just focus on one programming language + whatever framework and other tech are popular for it. For JavaScript it was React, Node js, then TypeScript and Next.js. If you build full stack apps using Node js then it would be reasonable for a potential employer to assume you'd be able to pick up other backend languages quickly.
@@WebDevJapan thanks alot mate, i really appriciate you advice ♥hope we meet someday :D
Last I've checked (please correct me if I'm wrong), average software engineer salary in Japan is about 1/3 (or even 1/4) of what one earns in USA.
Yes, and the cost of living is also 1/3 to 1/4. I'm an hour drive from Osaka and pay $280 a month for rent and it's in a safe area with no crime.
100 sites for $2 is a good deal
Yeah, if some of them start having huge amounts of traffic you might have to upgrade. But even then it would be like $9 of month?
this is a ghost dev :)
There was coding going on inbetween, I swear
@@WebDevJapan hehe all the best to you :)
Why not just store the user's language preference in a cookie and use that cookie to render the appropriate language
still working on this?
We put it on hold because it was just an in-house project without a guarantee that a client would pay for it. We got too busy with our main projects. We are just a small company - less than 20 people.
Brother can i possibol without degree software engineer job
I did. But if you want a work visa in Japan you will need a university degree or some professional certification.

Sir, can i join Japan University for do software engineer 04 year degree. Is japan university course program are useful the this morden IT industrial field. I am foreign studen can you give me some advices for me sir to start my IT journey in Japan
There are some universities that are in English, yeah. Do you understand Japanese language? The university degree is a good credential to have for getting a job in Japan but not 100% necessary. If you speak Japanese, are in Japan, and have good programming skills you can get a job. If you don't speak Japanese I would go to a language school first and then some kind of 1-2 year IT technical school.
"now I don't even know what's going on.." Yeap,I use this statement everyday at work
Hello Sir, good work. I tried subbing to your newsletter on your website but the form didnt work. Could you check it. I really love your meetup blogs on Osaka. Keep it up.
Hey! Thanks and thanks for letting me know about the newsletter. I'll figure out what the problem is.
what's your tech stack? and which ones do you think are good for working in Japan?
I did JavaScript, Node.js, and React during my studies. Almost every project at my job is TypeScript, React, Next.js, and AWS. They do some Python in the backend sometimes. I see a lot of jobs like that in Japan.

Are there any react native community groups or channel in japan?
for React, I've seen some in person meet up groups but not specifically for React native. Simon Grim is who I got the tutorial from to build this Poke app.
Hey, I've been thinking about working in Japan but have heard scary stories about work life balance. Could you please tell me How the work life balance is, in the software developer industry?
The place where I'm working now is great. It's flex time, fully remote, east to take days off whenever you need to, etc. But I had to work at some companies that were not so great on the way here to my current lifestyle.
You High?
I noticed that you are working with Shopify, and I am also working with it. Do you like working with this platform?
Yes! I love Shopify, not only working on the platform but also helping people launch their e-commerce brands or improve their already existing brands. Sometimes it's hard but most of the time it's enjoyable and sometimes exciting when getting close to launch or seeing results.
Hey , I have no reply from Japan Job Agent Daijob. or any other method to search the job in Japan. Please tell the correct way to do to.I have Linkined profile ? What is the way show them

@@WebDevJapan Yes, I will share my linkedin and resume to you tommorow
I'm currently working as Linux sysadmin while studying to get a bachelor's in Computer Science part time. In my free time I'm learning Japanese as a hobby. I'm thinking about eventually switiching careers from sysadmin to developer and moving to Japan sounds interesting. I was wondering if you - as someone with experience - can give me a rough idea about my chances? Let's say I've just finished my bachelor's, speak decent but probably not fluent Japanese by the time, have 5 years experience as a sysadmin, no relevant experience as a software dev, but some neat projects on GitHub, would any Japanese companies be interested in me if I applied from abroad? If not, what if after getting my bachelor's I worked in my home country as a software dev for a year or two? Is devops a thing in Japan? Haven't really seen job postings for that. Getting into Japan as an english teacher first is not really an option for me since english is not my first language, although I speak it very well.
Hi brother, I had 4 years of experience in production grade. I don’t have University degree and I'm came from non CSE background. I'm doing problem solving leetcode also. So my questions is I don’t have any university degree so can I track good tech company?? Please answers ❤
Hello. Yes, you can get a job. If you're looking for a job in Japan you will need one or two professional qualifications to get a visa.
@WebDevJapan Thanks a lot
I like the hairy Vlog microphone 😃
Thanks. I like your vapor statue profile pic
Hello WebDevJapan I saw a post of yours on reddit and then saw your channel, I would like to ask a few questions on discord if you have time? Thank you in advance
sure! thanks for stopping by the channel
Interesting I was trying to do that yesterday and it didn’t work same thing but I get error 404 😂
Which one? Hostinger or Github? If you share your repo with me I can take a look.
Hey mate! Im wondering if there any IT job that could fall under Gijinkoku visa in International service category, the one which only 3 yoe instead of 10 yoe needed for those w/ degree. 😅
Engineer is one of the job categories, so I think so. If you are a software engineer it might fall under that category. I need to ask around to foreigners who are software engineers to know for sure. A lot of us have spouse visas though.
*There is no actual "master's degree" in ANYTHING in india...so be ready to do the work they fail to do at that company. Sadly making sure things actually get done PROPERLY (when others faked their way into the company) is the White male role in tech companies.*
*no code...wtf? Yeah, that's a "niche"...yikes! (comment for that guy that said he has a fiancee in nigata)*
is this able to do if its iintegrated to database/BE ?
GitHub pages is for static pages only, no BE
nice to see that video i thought software engineers do all day drink coffe, rest at cool places, eat free from open kitchen, walking around, go to the gym 😂
lol maybe some do I've seen people talk about how they work 5-10 hours a week for $100,000 year salary.
How much is an annual salary for a software engineer in Japan?
For me, as someone with no CS degree and no work experience, entry level was 3.2 million yen a year. That's the absolute lowest anyone should get as a SWE. 5 - 6 million is more realistic for someone with experience. Good companies will pay 9 million + for senior level.
@@WebDevJapan I am confused between working in Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom. What do you think the best chooses?
@@i10_iO There are a lot of factors that will go into that choice. I pay 15% of my take home pay in rent. I think it's more like 50-60% in the USA and UK. But I have a very low entry level salary. If I was getting a good dev salary in Japan my rent would be less than 10% of my pay - as low as 7% if you're single in a small apartment. But Japanese yen doesn't convert well into USD right now. So, if you have financial obligations outside of Japan it could be difficult. Or if you want to invest in things that are handled in USD. Then there is the crime - well, not in Japan. There is almost nothing to worry about here. You won't get robbed. Your car won't be stolen. Women can walk around at night without fear. It's a very peaceful country.
@WebDevJapan Well, I love Japan and I want to work there, but I'm afraid I'll be blind for hours and exhausted and karoshi. Does working in Japan really have long hours? Do you work more than 40 hours a week? I'm also single, living alone.
@@i10_iO I did have one job like that before. I feel like it's a rite of passage to long term life in Japan. Most people have to experience a "black company" at least once before moving on to a better lifestyle in Japan.

Thanks m8
