Hi Mohamed, you can distill all plants whose leaves or bark contains essential oils. Easiest to test is to rub the leaves between your fingers. If you get a strong smell and oily feeling in your fingers, then the plant most probably has essential oils. Be carefull since some plants oils might be poisonous. Just google the plant and check, rather save than sorry😃

Hello, I am trying to take out steam distillation of 3kg eucalyptus leaves with 6L of water with gas burner. But i am unable to get oil from it, instead very small amount i am getting but its black colour. Can you please help me with the process?
Are you steam distilling or boiling the leaves in the water? If you are steam distilling, try crushing the leaves prior to distillation. The oil is probably inside the cells and crushing will help liberating the oil

How about making a video that explains each part of the apparatus. I have been using a Soxhlet extractor followed by fractional distillation. Soon I'm going to attempt a vacuum distillation with a Dean Stark trap. Your machine looks like it would save me several steps. I'd also like to see the cleaning procedure
Thanks for the comment, will do another video soon. If you use vacuum, just make sure you protect your vacuum pump with a freeze trap if you are using rotary vane oil pump.
You didn't use a filter in the extractor. Are they unnecessary?
Only necessary if small particles are present which can syphon back to the flask. In this case, it was not necessary.

Does crushing the leaves or chopping them to smaller pieces increase oil recovery?
It usually does, especially if the oil is intracellular. We took the skins of grapefruit and pulverized it before distillation. The yield was definitely increased.

I tried to extract essential oil from moringa olifera leaves by this method but I got more water insted of essential oil. Let me know about this problem.

@@mansipatel6371 Ok but have you checked how much oil will be expected from that particular plants leaves? Some leaves have the oil intracellular and crushing them before distillation can help a lot
It's not a problem, that's normal for all extraction. That's the main reason pure oils are so expensive.
Curious, did you plug up the top of your soxhlet extractor. One some videos, I saw a thermometer on top.
Hi Steve, no its open. No need to measure temperature here. But when doing distillations its very nice to know the vapour temperature just before it enters the condenser.
