    This is a really could course and I learned a lot in several areas. I was already familiar with the graph but I had not been using at logically as you do, namely lining it up with the grids that represent frames. This was also an eye-opener on animation workflows. There are so many things you do with duplication and mattes that I will incorporate into future projects. In the past, I would have saved so much time by simply duplicating things rather than starting new layers from scratch and re-entering information I already have somewhere else. Finally, it was a great insight into general design principles. It has taught me I should have a more logical approach to my projects from the outset. Previously, I've just muddled along without thinking enough about consistency or restricting myself to a colour palette. This course was difficult and I had to re-watch parts several times, but definitely worth it.

    • @BallerFX
      @BallerFX 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Ben! Headshots were built once and rendered from a spreadsheet using Dataclay's Templater for all 27 players. Name + Number is rigged up based on the length of the last name so that the number sticks to the bottom right, and the name is on the upper left. Had to make sure they didn't go off screen. Player headshots are sized and positioned inside their own comp so their eyes are in the same line and roughly the same spot...obviously with the video, they're moving around, so it's a rough positioning based on their landing spot.

    Is there a Sequence Preset that is best to use for Mogrt files? It's so many to choose from.

    • @BallerFX
      @BallerFX 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Romeo, ya...since all MOGRTs are created with different specs, it depends on how it's created. Here's the best way to make sure you get the settings correct: Start a new sequence and make sure the sequence is empty. Drop the MOGRT onto the timeline. It'll prompt you if the MOGRT settings differ from the sequence settings, and you can then choose to use the MOGRT settings for the sequence.

    crazy helpful! I have questions Heres the scenario: In one comp I have a control null called CONTROLLER // within that null I have 2 color controls (1 - Primary and 1 - Secondary) as shown in your video @10.24 - I also have 1 dropMenu called SELECT BRAND (with 2 options) On my timeline I have 2 shape layers with fill effects In the first shape layer here is my expression on color: var dropMenu =thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect("SELECT BRAND")("Menu").value; thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER")(dropMenu + " - Primary"); Basically trying to connect the fill layer color to the color picker within controller (based on dorpmenu # + type next to it) if I understand correctly? But I get an error saying 'property or method names 'undefined - Primary' in 'Class Group' is missing or doesnt not exist. It may have been renamed, deleted or the name may have been mistyped. The synthax checks out however, and i've never encountered that error...what am I missing? Thank you for your help!

    • @BallerFX
      @BallerFX 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Looks like you're missing some syntax between Controller and dropMenu...give this a shot! thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect("Replace with Effect Name")(dropMenu + " - Primary");

      @@BallerFX since im not using pseudo effects and theres only color controls, im confused at to what effect name I should plug :/

    • @BallerFX
      @BallerFX 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GoodTimesHD do you have the effect named 1-Primary, 2-Primary, etc? If that's the case, use everything up to .effect, and then use (dropDown + "-Primary) after .effect. I needed an extra (" ") in there to call out the name of the effect, but if you're just using color controls, you can call it directly.

    • @GoodTimesHD
      @GoodTimesHD 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BallerFX Thank you for the quick response - I'm used to using the hextoRBG expression and conditional statment to control color based on dropdown menu so making this work would absolutely change my workflow for the best. (expressions I tried below applied to the fill effect on a shape layer) I tried using the index # to call out the effect and that doesnt work. I also tried using .effect(''1 - Primary'') and that didnt work either. I tried connecting the dropdown menu instead but no avail on that one.... dropMenu = thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect("SELECT BRAND")("Menu").value; thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect(1)(dropMenu + " - Primary"); thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect(''1 - Primary'')(dropMenu + " - Primary"); thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect("1 - Primary")("Color")(dropMenu + " - Primary"); I have no clue what im missing, I know this is simple stuff haha but i'm sure the solution is right in front of me....going crazy right now hahaha

    • @BallerFX
      @BallerFX 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GoodTimesHD Ok, keep that dropMenu line...for the next line, pick whip up to your top color effect, and that will give you the base to work off of. Then you can go through and change out the number for the dropdown. You'll need to remove it from the quotes and add a + before the quotes start. Should look something like this: dropMenu = thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect("SELECT BRAND")("Menu").value; thisComp.layer("CONTROLLER").effect(dropMenu + " - Primary'')("Color"); Pick whipping will be the key to get the right syntax to start with, and you'll have minimal edits to make from that.

  • @nathitappan
    @nathitappan 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Always cool to see how else you can achieve automation! There are so many ways, I'll have to look into the Pseudo Effect plugin. Two questions: does it not interfere with sharing mogrts? Some effects and plugins require the end user to also have it installed on their machines to be able to render all effects in the mogrt. And do you ever feel like expressions can slow down your renders? I've been meaning to make some tests to see what's the benefit/return break-point but haven't had the time. For instance I love using one precomp with all athletes headshots, scale, anchor point and position all set through expressions, then turn their opacity on or off based on a match to the name. But that's quickly turned into 200 expressions, albeit simple ones, in one comp.

    • @BallerFX
      @BallerFX 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ya, for sure...Pseudo is great because it works like a single effect, and doesn't require anyone else to have it installed. Once you add it to a layer, it acts like a native effect. Expressions can definitely slow down renders...these one's writing to dropdowns as opacity on/off switches are pretty light. If AE starts to chug, I turn on the render time column and see if there's a specific layer that's causing issues with timing. For this NLL project, I had a few challenges because I had a background borealis type effect for the background that was heavy on the CPU and slowed things down, but the changing of the colors, text, and logos was super fast if that was off.

      Hi DJ, that's awesome...definitely jealous of the kinds of resources you have access to at your age. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. Make sure to tag me with what you create from this!

    Justin, I love the work! How did you learn after effects and photoshop and if you could learn it all over again how would you do it?

      Thanks Ryan, took many years...started playing around and tinkering adding some graphics here and there when I was shooting + editing. Did a lot of Andrew Kramer tutorials, and eventually School of Motion courses. There are so many parts to motion design, I'd pick what interests you and focus on that area for 4-6 months and work on building up specific skills that way. Taking courses that are targeted will help you focus and get the most out of them.

    Can you explain the reason to do this instead of changing the range selector units from index to percentage?

      Hi Greg, it gives you more capabilities if you need to art direct it. For some executions, range will work just fine. I find when I work with some effectors like opacity or fill, I don't like the results I get, and need to work with index. For instance, range wouldn't be able to do what I did with the colors near the end when the color slowly fades from red to blue. By having it on index and adding the Math.round() function, we can ensure that it goes from red to blue without the fade through purple. These can often be preferences based on the work being created. I typically default to using index so I can be specific about the art direction.
