so basically putting a turbo on a 1G will only make about 200hp.. but the 3sge on the altezza makes that power stock. pretty sad tbh as it just de motivates me to turbo mine considering other altezzas make that power stock
All depends on health of the engine and how much boost is being pushed. Unopened 1G tends to top out at 280hp before going bang, but are capable of more if running a decomp plate and good tune. Besides it’s an engine from the 80s not designed for performance so comparing it to the 3SGE, an engine designed to be a performance/sporty engine is not a fair comparison
Hi, @Racelab_life. Do you have a part number of exedy singlemass flywheel or link where you bought it?
Where did you source the turbo manifold
@@TheNotCletus My turbo kit was second hand and it is a homemade manifold 🙂
Great video man. I just need help with the intercooler pipes shapes from the turbo to the intercooler. If you could help, that would be great.
@@ayeleyapawwah39 thanks for watching and commenting! how can I help?
What shape do you use for the intercooler pipes that go from the turbo to the intercooler?
@@ayeleyapawwah39 a 45 degree silicone joiner that comes straight off the turbo downwards into some ally that points around the outside of the power steering pump etc, then into a 90 degree elbow to get it into the cooler. Hope that helps :)
How did you convert it to E85 and does it matter compared to U98 in this particular instance since it's not a huge power gain? Obviously compared to your stock figure it's decent increase though these cars stock should make about 100kw, so I'm curious what a U98 run would be like compared to E85
@@MADagain All good questions, Thanks for the comment :) 1. The “conversion” is simple, put ethanol in it…… although to ensure the ethanol does not do damage to the standard fuel system components I replaced all the fuel components with ethanol compatible parts, (rubber hoses/fuel pump/injectors and regulator are all e85 compatible) and from there I tell my ecu what fuel is in the tank and it does the appropriate corrections for fuel density calculations etc 2. E85 is arguably not needed especially at its current boost level however I did it more as a longevity and future proofing move due to the fact my engine is high I’m km/miles and i knew everytime i drove it i would be always pushing it full noise and bouncing off the rev limiter the cooling properties of alcohol fuels will help keep it running cooler and last longer when “hotlapping” a track which is the entire purpose of this car, something that works everytime and I never have to worry about watching temps just drive drive drive 3. E85 due to its high octane rating and fantastic cooling properties also gives me a larger tuning window for when i inevitably turn up the boost to which ethanol in my opinion will become necessary for engine safety (future-proofing) Hope this was helpful thanks for watching, appreciate the support :)
@@Racelab_life Thanks a lot for the run down. I have a mate with an is200 and eventually we will be looking at throwing a turbo at it to see what happens so any help or just alternative ways about doing it is good to see. I've seen countless people say it's not worth it on these motors but their just slow and unresponsive stock anyway. So any improvement just for responsiveness I think is a good move as long as his engine is healthy enough for it. Which we will find out ahead of time. It's all about the enjoyment at the end of it. Rather than completely engine swapping it of course. I do have one last question related to ecu stuff, I've seen a few people run the stock ecu but never clarify if that's all they used. Is it possible to use the stock ecu in this instance or does it require some form of aftermarket ecu... Obviously if it could run a stock ecu the lack of tuning would hurt it but if we're able to limit boost should it work?
@@MADagain No problem, it’s obviously a lot larger of a gain just by going jz or another easier to make power platform but this was incredibly cheap for me to do vs a jz conversion so was a no brainer for me, the biggest thing to make them last is a good tune, highly recommend using a known reputable tuner that knows what they’re doing and understands these aren’t the strongest in stock form. As far as ecu goes there are companies out there that sell “packages” that give you a fuel system/turbo kit/intercooler/ dump pipe/fuel cut defender etc and claim that it’s safe to run their setup on 7 or 14 psi depending on which package you go but…… based off the fact the stock ecu is NOT tuneable at all I would personally advise against this and run a piggyback setup like in my video or wire in a standalone to gain full control of all engine functions, this is in my opinion much safer and better, although I have no experience with the types of kits mentioned above so cannot necessarily speak poorly of them, I’m sure they work great but a standalone ecu is always better in this case…
@@Racelab_life yeah I think for us the goal is just to get it running with a controlled amount of boost say 3-5 psi then once that's sorted find a "cheap" after market ecu to use as a light back but I've never done anything like that so just wanted to get your opinion based on the fact you sound like you know a bit about these cars. Any chance you could do a video about how you have yours set up and what it allows to to control?
@@Racelab_life we'll have to do a lot of tests and check if the motor is even suitable for boost first though as the motor is completely unknown to us. If it's clean under the rocker cover and sump is clean it may be good enough but starting out with a low amount of boost just to see how the engine behaves I think is the start but we ain't even close to trying it yet just getting some options for us. I'm currently rebuilding a Subaru EZ30 and will eventually boost that motor but that's an entirely different can of worms haha
201 -23 whp is insane on a 1gfe with stock 155-160 engine hp/ 111-118 whp. that is roughly an 85hp gain. which technically means you can now call it a 245hp engine. which is nuts. i dont know how reliable that will be with a weak stock 1gfem but its probably fine. and you said you were going to run it on e85 race ggas. which presumably reduces the chance of knock/ pre ignition etc which would be what ends the engine with weak rods. not that i know anything about cars. because i dont. but this almost makes me want to do something similar on my 1gfe altezza. but honestly, i think i still prefer the idea of selling it and buying a 3sge altezza rs200, which fortunately for me is an option (albeit expensive) in my country.

wait isnt tthe is200 stock supposed to make 155hp??
@@twixu8811 Technically it does….. at the flywheel but not at the wheels…… most power figures listed by the OEM’s are flywheel hp/tq figures measured using an engine dyno. Every engine looses power through the drivetrain due to the effort it takes to rotate all the mechanical parts through to the wheels (gears, tail shaft, diff, axles, hubs) The dyno in this video measures power at the hubs and is a more “ realistic “ power figure as it’s what’s actually being made at the hubs/wheels…… Thanks for the comment 🙂 (A rough rule of thumb is a 15-20% loss through the drivetrain which puts the factory power output around 125-135hp at the wheels…. which I am just shy of at 118hp on a hot day)
