The Delicately Beautiful Lacets of Montvernier | French Alps
The final ride of our trip after completing the Route of the Grand Alps. Les Lacets de Montvernier is pure heaven for those addicted to riding their bicycle up switchbacks. Climbing right up out of the picturesque Marienne Valley from Pontamafrey, France up 17 delightful switchbacks to the town of Montvernier was a joy and a fitting conclusion to our Route of the Grand Alps trip. This little tandem bicycle ride concluded 64,422 feet of climbing over 523 miles in two weeks. Come along with us as we experience the Lacets of Montvernier!

After completing the Route of the Grand Alps, Lisa and I had a couple of rides we wanted to claim out of the Marienne valley of France before our tandem cycling adventure was complete. The Col de la Madeleine is a beast of a climb rising 5,000 feet over just 11 miles with an AVERAGE gradient of 8%. It's also a beautiful climb and we had a wonderful time. It ascends many of the greatest Tour de France climbs and passes through majestic terrain that is equal to or greater than anywhere on earth. We woke up in Menton and decided to go for it. How could we not! Nice is the traditional end of the Route of the Grand Alps and how could we sell ourselves short in Menton after having some so far on our tandem bicycle adventure across France. Mount Timpanogos is a stunning mountain located in the center of Utah's Wasatch Front. Lisa and I have done many fall rides over the Alpine Loop pass and we love it. I recently bought a drone and had some fun flying it in this area on the perfect day. Then I set the video to "Turning of the Year" written and performed by my very talented wife, Lisa. I hope you enjoy.

      Thank you! So glad to hear from you. We have a single 34 on the front and 12 gears on the back ranging from 11 to 52. Definitely geared for climbing. If you have a similar one by 12 configuration, you might want to consider a 36 or 38 on the front. Still plenty of climbing for a strong couple.

    • @bohurley2051
      @bohurley2051 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tandemtravels Thanks for your reply! Very surprised by your answer! It caused me to reconsider my approach, and led me to the questions below. By my calculations your lowest gear is 17.6 gear inches ((34/52)x27=17.65), and your next lowest gear is likely around 20 gear inches. However, in my 3x10 drivetrain my lowest gear is 20.25 gear inches ((24/32)x27=20.25). I would love to have your 17.6 gear inch for climbing! Around what gradient % do you tend to use your lowest gear, how much do you use it, and how much does it depend upon the amount of weight you happen to have in your panniers? Thanks so much for your help!!

    • @tandemtravels
      @tandemtravels ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bob. Great math! It's necessary and important. A few things. 1) We don't camp, so we're just carrying our clothes and other gear, jackets and wet gear, cameras, bike lock, etc. About 25lbs total. 2) Lisa is handicapped so it's hard to say what a fair comparison would be to two people with full power in their legs. She still carries her own weight, but I probably carry the luggage. In all our "non-pannier" rides we try to never use 1st gear. We consider that our pannier gear and reserve it for 9%+ climbs. Definitely nice to have. But it's a gear we didn't have until we changed out our 3X10 last year. So all the climbing you've watched was on the 3X10 that was probably similarly geared like yours. Our 2nd gear now is similar to our prior 1st gear. My bet is that you'll be just fine. Slow and steady wins the race. I hope that helps.

    First, Thank you! This video is super encouraging. My family just purchased a tent and we're pumped to get out and give it a try. Can you please share how you permanently mounted the rails? I think that's a brilliant idea given how much you'll use it. Thanks again from Pagosa Springs CO.

    • @tandemtravels
      @tandemtravels ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll have to do that. Until then, all I did was paint the rails with a textured black paint. Then, after setting it up and getting a good idea of where the rails should go, I drilled some holes and used some small hex bolts with washers to permanently mount it on the side rails. Works great and looks great! I’ll see if I can get a video done on it. Good luck!

      @MathewWolford ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you still use your Tonneau cover?

    • @tandemtravels
      @tandemtravels ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MathewWolford yes. Because the tunnel cover, I have does not cover up the bed rails. But you will want to make sure with your set up that it won’t cause a problem.

    I was surprised how poorly the wood petrifier product works. We purchased a GALLON of wood pretrifier, and when we asked for a refund because it actually made the repqir worse, the Sales Director (Rich Baker) offered to remedy the problem by offering us a 24 OUNCE replacement, and went so far as to deny us ANY amount of refund from the company who actually makes the this product - and yes we have all receipts. I don't know why the product performed so poorly, but we went to Home Depot and bought a bottle of VARATHANE, wood hardener, and it worked perfectly. It's one thing to make a product that customers cannot benefit from, but to refuse to refund a customers money -- YOU HAVE NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER -- BEWARE.

      Interesting. I’m sorry you had a bad experience. I cleaned out all the garbage and what was left. Hardened very nicely with the product. Good luck to you.

      @@tandemtravels I would think all those products are near the same. They tell you, as you said, it wont work on rotten wood. I used Elmer's and one other and both worked fine. I am about to start a smaller project with the PC and will see what happens. I have already put on another brand of harder. If I could live life over, I would never have an un covered deck. We need to think more about our projects when building in the first place.🦇
