Was a lot quicker in the corners but not much in it on the straights: was glad when you locked a brake as I didn’t want to have to make a lunge under braking as we had brake locking issues as you can see from all the smoke!

More funto run a slower bike fast than a faster bike slow. This just seems more interesting.

When you figure that most of owners of modern race replicas loaded with computers, fat sticky tires, powerful brakes and 200 Hp, if placed among these old things with 1/4 of the power, no brakes an mountain bike tires, would just be humiliated in every turning. Back in the day, pilots were fearless daredevils. The minimal weight does the rest (and yes, a modern pilot would destroy them, with a more recent bike, but it would take a professional, imo).

Great video. Takes me back when I used to chase Manx's ect. on my Velo Thruxton and 350 Ducati around Cadwell in the 70's. The track is as I remember it except the little bus stop section. Makes me feel young again. Thanks for posting.

The thing about racing back in the sixties the bikes were pretty evenly matched in performance apart from those of the top tuners Petty,Beart,Francis which had a bit of an edge,of course top riders had these.But the rider could make a difference.My favourite Ron Chandler local boy

I can't get over how narrow the rear tyres are.

If the video is in real time you were lapping around 53/54 secs? Back in 84 on an LC 250 we were doing those times, but with the old Graham Hill bend, which was almost flat from Druids to Surtees! Terry Rymer did a 52.9 if I remember right on an LC250 proddy legal bike! On his 350 Power Valve he did a 51. something! Those were the days! And that was on treaded tyres, TG22's I think? Maybe KR124's? Riders of the day were Rymer obviously, Stuart Melen, Gary Morris and his brothers! Richard Stockings and a few other quick ones! I remember Stockings used 350 barrels on a 250 and the Morris Brothers had Jacking plates which were a great way to move the port timing, but deemed illegal even though the plates were genuine parts! I can't remember their tuners name bill something over Redbridge way, the other two names were Stan Stevens and Bob Farnham! Like I said, great times!

Takes me back to the 90s as a kid, waking up to the smell of Castro R and bacon butties... the sound of engines and the tannoy calling for scrutineering. Mum and dad racing outfits at Brands, Cadwell, 3 sisters etc. Now I wish I could go back and appreciate the racing. Great video!

So how did the lap times compare with the old days? Clearly the modern riders are using a knee down cormering technique that was not used by the originals.
