Welcome to Chaz Koi!
I am an absolute complete beginner to pond keeping!
I’ve always wanted a pond and I decided that 2023 was the year to finally make that dream come true. Having learned so much from other TH-camrs documenting their koi keeping journeys, it has inspired me to do the same.
I’m a keen DIYer and love to learn new skills so I’m thoroughly looking forward to learning about the wonderful world of Koi keeping x
Thanks for paying a visit and I hope you enjoy my channel :)

I have two pressure filters running in parallel, feeding a 1 meter long, 3 tier shower unit. The pond is 900 gallons, the water parameters are all good and the koi are healthy. I would prefer not to use pressure filters but can’t think of another way of feeding the shower unit without using two pumps. I am considering changing to a single Oase 19000 pressure filter as it looks to be easier to clean than the 2 filters I already have. Any comments welcome.
Its bout 5 quid a day to run btw😂
Very helpful, thanks
How many koi did you end up having in the tote in total? I currently have 9 with the same setup basically
My man.. Don't chuck the waste water Dilute and water your plants....its liquid gold for plants.
I saw one that was used with zero cleaning on koi pond until the pump just stopped. It was packed full of $h1t. Couldn't see the sponges at all. Stank like hell. Maybe 20 liters of pure gank.
I hope you’re changed the UV lamp at 12 months as at 18 months it’s probably doing nothing as they start to degrade from day 1. I do think that your maintenance on your filter is not adequate (My opinion only) I also have pressure filters (2) on my small pond (3500 liters) with a flow rate of 6000 liters each. (Pumps rated at 9000 liters each) I alternate the filter strip down weekly and never had a problem with water parameters. I have to ask what is that black gunk on the side of your pond. Just to say I’m not criticizing you in any way, this is just the way I do things.
Genuine question - what is the point in a pressure filter if you are going to strip it down every week - why not just get a "proper" gravity koi filter for the same price if not cheaper
Thanks for your reply. It’s actually every 2 weeks if you read the article correctly. I believe that all the fish waist that the filters take out of the pond is deteriorating water quality if not removed, it’s just the same as not having a filter and letting it sit on the bottom of the pond. I hope that you can see my reasoning behind what I do.
@@davidmontgomery3811 Sure, but IMHO the point of pressure filters is that they have some sort of easy clean function, weather it be spinclear on the APS model shown in this vid and also found on hozelock models, or the foam compression system found of Oase models. The only reason i got a pressure filter over a typical koi filter it that i can use the cleaning function every 3 or 4 days to get the fish waist etc out and only have to deep clean every year.
I’ve found that doing a backwash doesn’t remove all of the waste in the filter as is shown in the original video.
Very useful, thanks!

Just wondering are pond fish getting less hardy because when I was a young boy we had about 2 months of freezing weather even the shoreline had ice , cars were driving on the broads and we had a pond my dad drilled a hole in the ice which was over 9 inches thick , when it all melted we counter our fish and we never lost one of our gold fish and some were fancy ones
@@snodgee possibly mate! I was defo thinking about this as the winter came and went.. I have got a heater fitted, but I didn’t want the fish to not experience a cold snap, otherwise next year, if I didn’t use the heater it might hit them harder if they hadn’t built up the resilience… in the end I set it so that the water temp wouldn’t go lower than 6deg c, which I thought was a bit if a compromise given that some of the koi were still really quite small… time will tell I suppose!

@@The_Koi_Pit Hiya! This is the first time I’ve changed them, and it’s been about 15 months since I started using it. Do you leave the filter running when you empty the water out of the drain pipe? As on quite a few videos people turn the filter off first, msny thanks
Hi James, I leave the pump running when I put the filter to drain, if that’s what you’re asking? I also turn the pump up to 100% so that I get maximum pressure through the filter.
Hi mate, thanks for your reply, apologies I'm abit of a newby with these external pond filters, so I have the pump and filter (1 mains socket for each) do I just leave the pump & filter running as normal but just turn my filter to drain and that's it, so I'm not turning anything off or back on ?
@@JamesCleaver-hq6xj gotcha! I do momentarily switch the pump off, before it turn the filter to drain, and then turn it back on again. Likewise, when I switch the filter back from drain to filter, I will do the same. This is because as the lever on the filter turns around it will cut off all flow for a second, so turning the pump off when you do that, prevents any back pressure from potentially damaging the pump. I don’t switch off power to the filter which will be for the uv. Hope that helps! :)
