Bass Fishing - Private Water Kayak Fishing - June 2024
I received an invite from a friend to fish a small private lake in
East Texas near Athens. Early and
late in the day a small crankbait @cottoncordell
worked best along creek edges.
Midday, the bass were holding on
steep banks that provided shade.
Texas rigged plastics produced
consistent bites.
I hope you enjoy the adventure.

Received an invite from a friend to fish a small private lake. The lake was the perfect setup to do some kayak fishing. The bass were post-spawn. Fish were caught on crankbaits, jerk baits, and soft plastics. A soft plastic MJ rig produced the most catches. Thanks for checking out the video, I hope you enjoy it. @FishingTexan @Privatewaterfishing @AscendKayaks @rightontrailer #133XTournament #T...
Bass Fishing a Stalled Storm Front in the Fall - Lake Fairfield, TX - 16 Oct 2022

Returned to Lake Fairfield two days after fishing under high pressure and blue bird skies. A storm front boundary was stalled over the lake providing cloud cover, low pressure, and intermittent light rain throughout the day. The fish were feeding actively through the day and were caught on a wider variety of baits. This video is a bit longer but solid fish in the 2 lb range were caught througho...
Bass Fishing - Fall Bass Fishing Under Blue Bird Skies - Lake Fairfield, TX - 14 Oct 2022
มุมมอง 2422 ปีที่แล้ว
Joined a friend for a day's bass fishing on Lake Fairfield in Central Texas. It was a mild fall day with blue bird skies. The lake was well into its Fall transition with the grass and lily pads beginning to thin and water temps in the 60s. Most fish were caught on 4" to 6" soft plastic swimbaits in Houdini, Watermelon Red, and Pro Blue. Thanks for checking out the video, I hope you enjoy it. #f...

Returned to the creek we fished a few days earlier to see if the fish were still active. The pattern we established using squarebill crankbaits and Texas rigged plastics continued to produce catches. I hope you enjoy the video. #fishingtexan #joepoollake #cottoncordell

A friend and I headed back to my favorite creek for some bass fishing in the early Fall. There were large amounts of baitfish present and the bass were actively feeding. The most bites came on small squarebill crankbaits throughout the day but the fish caught were mostly small. I did try a Texas rigged beaver bait periodically and the fish caught with this bait were larger but not as numerous. ...
Bass Fishing - Summer Crankbait Bass - Lake Whitney, TX - 17 Sep 2021

Summertime bass fishing at Lake Whitney. Almost every good fish I hooked got off right at the boat. I was beginning to think that maybe my hooks had holes in them! :-) I did manage to boat a few, including a good sized largemouth. Thanks for checking out the video! I hope you enjoy it. #FishingTexan #LakeWhitney @StrikeKingLure #summerbassfishing

I captured this video footage some time ago, but it's summer bass fishing in North Texas so I thought I'd go ahead and post it. Headed out to fish my local lake during the last week of Summer 2021. For the end of Summer, the lake level was surprisingly high and the water temperatures were beginning to cool as the transition to Fall was starting. Lots of bait were present in the creeks and the f...
Kayak Fishing - First Time Out In My New Kayak - East Texas - 03 Jun 2022

I got an invite to fish a private lake in East Texas to try out my new Ascend 133X kayak. It was a perfect mild day to learn how to use the kayak's features. I still have some rigging to do on the kayak but I wanted to fish out of it first to decide on final locations of gear and accessories. It's also very different fishing closer to the water's surface. I missed boating a few fish by not adju...

Headed out for an afternoon of fishing in my favorite creek with a good friend. The afternoon started with fish responding to Texas rigged plastics and small crankbaits. Later in the afternoon the bite switched to topwater poppers making for a lot of fun. Thanks for checking out the video, I hope you enjoy it. #FishingTexan #JoePoolLake #topwater

Creek fishing on a nice late summer day. Largemouth were keying on the abundant schools of baitfish in the creek so a moving bait provided the most bites. Most interesting catch of the day at 08:36 on a Cotton Cordell Big O squarebill crankbait. #FishingTexan #JoePoolLake #CottonCordell @cottoncordell

Excellent Job explaining everything. Keep throwing.
Where do they stock the trout? At the bridge or does the fishery have their own ramp?
They usually stock upstream of the bridge but the trout spread out above and below the bridge after a few days. The TPWD website will have the stocking schedule and you can see the dates and the number stocked over the seasons.
@FishingTexan i already put in PTO for work for the 1st day they're stocking this year.
Nice multi species vid, time to get back on JP!
Thanks for watching
There’s the man, the myth, the legend. Hope all is well and enjoyed the video…
Oh and I heard the TDC (top dead center) reference. Love it. Thanks for the shout out even though I’ve been in hiding again. Hopefully I’ll get back to videos again in the near future.
Thanks Jason!! Been a busy year with elder care but hope to be fishing more often this coming year.
Sweet! He’s back for more fishing!!!
Thanks for watching. Hope to be fishing more in the coming year
Love your channel icon! Great video
Thanks!
@@FishingTexan welcome!
what creek is this , if dont mind? I have a jon boat and try and stay off the main lake
Walnut Creek off the lake’s West arm.
I just realized it’s been 5mos since your last video, did you sell the boat? Hope you’ve been well, Joe Pool is just down the street from me, missing the content!
I still have the boat. I'm hoping I'll be spending more time on the water soon. This year has been busy, so I haven't been able to fish as much as I'd like. Thanks for watching!
Great video bud! Amazing private water!! Wish that was at my house.
You and me both! Thanks for watching Drew!
That looked like a great day out! I was thinking “what’s the MJ Rig”. Now I know. Nice ones there at the end in particular.
Thanks for watching! It's a lot of fun to catch them on the MJ rig, especially if you're fishing grass.
Awesome Vid Sir! That looked like a ton of fun!🎣🐟
Thanks for watching!
Love these baits
Cool Vid Brother!
buzzbait great bait!
Looks like a fun time had
Nice video but not cool to handle trout with your dry hands/gloves like you did with the first one you caught.
Glad to see your videos, I've gone up that creek a few times , getting there was tough
With the lake level back at a full pool, it should be a little easier to enter the creek. You're correct, it's been tough getting back there recently. With the recent rains, I'm sure the water is pretty muddy but should clear up in a week or two. Thanks for watching!
@@FishingTexan I've seen you videos at Lake Whitney, we've been on a good striper bite out there lately
Dang Yall smaked em! I fished Pool today got on em pretty good! COOL VID!
Thanks! It was one of those good days on the water. Good to hear someone is catching them at Pool. I need to give Pool a try, it's been a while. Good to see the lake level is back up.
Good fishing friend I hit like stay connected friend 👍👍
Will do, thanks for watching!
Fun day brother. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks for the invite. It was a great time!
Another great vid! Awesome job out there.
Thanks!
Is that back in Walnut Creek? I’m trying to figure out the best way to get back there in my boat because I have a Lowe deep V 16ft and it gets shallow the further south you head away from Loyd Park.
Yes, Walnut Creek. I was able to get into the creek last week with no issues. I have a friend that has a center console skeeter with a deeper V hull and he said he was also able to get his boat into the creek. I think you should be fine with the lake only 1 ft low right now. I did trim up and idle for longer than I normally do but it was an uneventful ride into the creek proper. Good luck! I hope you catch a bunch!
Perfect! Thanks for the info! 👍
It's been a while I've been to Joe Pool. I've been chasing Crappie in the summer at Ray Roberts and Richland Chambers. I enjoyed watching your video
Thanks for watching. I fished Joe Pool today for the first time in a couple of months. Thankfully, the lake level is up. I was able to get into some of the creeks for the first time in about 4-5 months.
Great video! Glad to see you back posting new vids. Water temp has been in the low 60’s. Rain has helped fill up the lake a bit as well.
Thanks for checking out the video! I fished Joe Pool today. Fishing was slow but the lake looked much better compared to my last time there. The recent rains have helped. Main lake was 60 but the creeks were 51-53.
Can you shoot around there?
Shooting firearms is not allowed at Joe Pool Lake. The lake and it’s parks/entrances are all within city limits.
@@FishingTexan is there areas nearby we’re you can?
@@chanoleyva4208 Not outdoors. www.txgunrange.com is nearby.
@@FishingTexan the reason I ask is cause I’m in Arizona and here we can shoot pretty much anywhere there is open desert. Recently this state has turned communist and I was wondering how it was there to shoot recreationally. I don’t like paying for range time
@@chanoleyva4208 not like that in Texas. Have to go to a range or find someone with private land that will let you shoot on it. Pretty much nowhere else.
That is definitely a fun way to catch em right there.
We need some rain!
Definitely, it's pretty miserable right now. The only positive is seeing and marking some shallow water structure to fish when the water levels return to normal.
Nice vid, Tex! Very good looking lake too. Those Sandies can be really aggressive and fun but hazardous when thrashing around with a crankbait. Very good Largemouth! All the best, Don
I fish joe pool and I really appreciate your videos! Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching!
Is 10" trout the typical size they stock in texas? No fish that are at least 2 or 3lbs? I fished the guadalupe and same thing all little 10" fish with white meat.
The Guadalupe may also have larger trout in it as it can support trout year round. Most of Texas only has hatchery trout stocked during the winter months and they are all small.
That's got to be a bit of an adjustment, going from the big bass boat to sitting on the water.
You’re correct, it’s different playing fish much closer to the water’s surface. I’ll get it down eventually but for now, I’m missing a few here and there. On the plus side, I’m able to fish bodies of water that I can’t access with my bass boat.
did you just texas rig the craw or was it on a jig? i fish joe pool as well just looking for good color jig to use
I just Texas rig the craw and I do not peg it. I let the bead and weight move freely on the line. Thanks for watching!!

Awesome stuff. I just moved here and was hoping to fish Joe Pool. Which launch do you recommend for a bass boat?
I put in at Loyd Park on the west side of the lake. It’s a nice 4 lane ramp. They just increased the entrance fee to $20 per vehicle. You can get an annual pass for $125 if you think you’ll go often. If you’re on the east side of the lake, the state park has nice ramp facilities as well. I think the state park fee is $5 per person.
That Kayak sure does have alot of space! One thing I would recommend is some Landing Gear to make it easy to move into and out of the water I believe Boonedox makes some for all kind of kayaks Great video!
Thanks for the suggestion. I do have a cart that I use but my vehicle was really close to the takeout point so I didn't use it. I like the landing gear idea and will have to research to see if one is made to handle the width of this kayak. It's pretty big. Bass Pro offers a cart that utilizes the scupper holes but I'm reluctant to use it for fear of creating a leak.
Love the video man! tight lines to ya!
Thanks for watching
@@FishingTexan ofc you are welcome!!
I just fished a private lake for some bass on my YakAngling tube channel. I'm in Minnesota and we don't grow the Bass as big as Texas but they are still fun whether by ice or out in the Kayak. great Video!!
Thanks for watching! I'll check out your video. On the plus side, you have much better access to smallmouth bass. I have to drive a good distance to find smallmouth. Either way, being on some water, somewhere is a good thing.
Love those small lakes, looked fun! Did you get rid of the bass cat?
No I still have the bass cat. Just wanted something for Brazos river fishing and smaller bodies of water that I can’t fish from the bass cat.
Great stuff Mr Matt that's the exact kayak I am planning to buy I love how much space it has. Can't wait to see more videos off of it.
Thanks Eddie!! It's heavy but I'm very happy with it and how easy it is to fish from it. I'm thinking it needs some time on your favorite spillway creek.
@@FishingTexan it would be perfect out there. If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost for the yak and trolling motor?
Bass Pro will run specials and different packages on the kayak periodically, so check their advertisements. In their catalog they have an ultimate fishing kayak package that is around $2500 before tax. I saw different unique packages offered in their individual stores as well. This may mean they would work with you in putting together a package for your specific needs. Buying a package lowers the price of the individual items. I bought a package in March 2022 that was advertised for $2250 including sales tax. The package was the kayak, trolling motor, trolling motor mounting plate, and a 250-centimeter paddle. Since the kayak is motorized, you'll need TPWD registration and that was $59. Bass Pro/Cabela's will facilitate the registration if you want. You could also buy an extra transducer for your humminbird fish finder for the kayak and just move the display unit between your boat and kayak if you want that capability on the kayak.
@@FishingTexan awesome thank you so much for the info definitely gonna get me one but I had no idea they had packages.
I just fished there for the first time today it’s still An active crankbait bite shallow
crankbait for the win
Thanks for watching, Tyler. Yeah, I might just be a bit partial to a squarebill crankbait. :)
Can't wait till gas gets affordable again. Want to come up there! Good to see you Matt! Great vid!
I plan on hitting Whitney sometime in May. I'll check in when heading that way. Maybe you and Jason might be there. Whitney is looking a lot better than the lakes around me.
@@FishingTexan sounds great!! Hope to meet up this time!!
We sure do need some rain in there
Absolutely! Hopefully, we'll get some before the really hot weather starts.
Can't wait to head back out to JP
I haven't been in a while either. Hopefully the water level will rise soon. Hope you catch em when you go.
awesome...👍👍🎣🎣
Thanks!!
Hey have you been able to get into Walnut lately with the low water. I have not tried but curious since your boat is bigger than mine. Thanks for any feedback.
I was able to get into the creek on March 19. I think the water level is about the same as it was then. I did have to trim the big motor up at the entrance near the floating dock.
@@FishingTexan Thanks man appreciate the info.
Also do not let your line tough the water on the forward cast. All you are doing is disturbing the surface of the water and spooking the fish. Just back cast a few times and speed that line up as you do so as you shoot forward it pulls your line out. Work on your casting it will help your presentation.
If you are taught correctly when you start it is not a problem to do everything with your left hand and cast with the right if you are indeed right handed. Think about it... stripping with your left and have to switch over to the right hand to reel. Looks awful. Also you need to straighten out your line. It is so kinked.
Great vid as always Matt!! Hope you been well bud!!
Man I havnt seen you out there in awhile I'm a local and was doing some scouting lol dont look like this now
I'm pretty far behind on my videos and trying to get up to date with posting them. My last time at Pool was probably a month ago, I usually fish in the middle of the week now, and the water has been pretty low. I believe the largemouth spawn should get going in the next couple of weeks unless we get a massive rain. Lately I've been fly fishing on the Brazos River since the lake levels in the area have dropped. I'll be back out there soon and hopefully find some up shallow. Hope to see you out there!!
Great vid! Man seeing all these summer videos is helping me get through the cold and icy days we’ve been having here in DFW. Lol
