Rachel Slade (Into the Raging Storm author) suggests and I find it pretty plausible that the crew may not have even been able to exit a door to try to board a lifeboat by that point, perhaps with a desperate exception or two (the person whose body that was briefly located, maybe?), never mind been able to get to and LAUNCH the lifeboats in those conditions with that list + waves, without the boats immediately getting smashed into the ship with containers being tossed about and dozens of ejected ones probably still violently afloat close by. I've been briefly outside in low-CAT 1 conditions on land and i can't imagine anyone hacking through that powerful of a storm effectively at sea, outside, even on the safest craft in the world that isn't minutes from capsizing and with no shipping containers raining down on me. So my point being: the lifeboat grandfathering definitely should have ended years prior, but even if they'd had adequate lifeboats, I'm solemnly doubtful that there was much hope for anyone after Davidson's final rejection of Randolph's proposed escape plan. So yeah it's pretty much on Davidson. And TOTE. And a little on Bon Voyage too--I mean what a *stupid* product/default setting. TOTE almost never gets enough blame though--we can attribute Davidson's decisions to incompetence, ego, eagerness to save his career, etc and it's fair to decide he's unforgivable. Those are the kind of things that have always motivated flawed dipshit humans though. An individual asleep at the wheel can be a terrible thing, but it's not exactly shocking that it happens all the time. TOTE is an entire company whose leadership ultimately maintained that they basically couldn't have done anything differently in the way of shoreside support or supervision because Captain apparently means he is King of the Universe. Or maintained their badly-refitted ships better. Even with the lifeboats--yeah they weren't REQUIRED to replace the useless ones yet, but that's not the same thing as having been prevented from voluntarily doing so because you believe that people's lives are valuable. Everything shameful about the condition of that ship was ultimately a choice, measured against a bottom line.

Very sad. All the 33 crew members died because they had a idiot for a Captain. If there is a Huricane on the way. Stop and do not sail. If you want to gamble with your life then go head. This idiot for a Captain gambled with the lives of all 33 crew members. Also the survival rafts were all out dated. Perhaps this is why there were no survivors. Not only did the 33 crew members die. Sadly if their bodies were never found they were eaten by sharks. They should have had state of the art , top of the line rafts. With a sealed top. With bottled water to last two months. Food to last one or two months. The raft should have been a bright or yellow. With solar powered lights. Each raft able to hold ten crew members. With a PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACON , on each raft. With a direction locator to tell the passengers where they are and where they are going. Plus a way to direct the path they are going to. This way the raft would not get lost at sea. Sadly this arrogant Captain Davidson choose to sail through a Huricane, category #3 . As a sad result the ship sank and all 33 crew members died.

The Captain really just pissed his pants at every juncture. Why is the recording cut off when the ship goes down? You’d think they’d protect it so it could broadcast telemetry. I find it a little weird that nobody made it off the ship but I guess it’s high enough to swamp the ship it’s high enough to swamp a life raft.

That engine picture is a diesel. El Faro was a Steam ship with a boiler and turbines. When Davidson called the office...it was way too late. Nothing anyone in the office could do. The security alert is NOT a destress system for sinking. Davidson was probably referring to the GMDSS Distress system. Davidson was way too late in all respects. I sailed as a Chief Officer on oceangoing ships for 18 years., many times in large storms, hurricanes, seas 40ft or more. In once case 100 ft seas, blinding snow - zero visibility. - negative 50 windchill. We just rode that one out "Hove too" dead slow ahead. That was a 987 ft ship and in great condition. Lots of issues in this case with the maintenance and ISM Code requirements. What happened to Buys Ballots Law? Simple technique taught at Maritime Academies to determine the location of the storm center. duckduckgo.com/?q=buys+ballot+law+explanation&t=osx&ia=web

@@beyondtheharbor7431 No not normal. But if you have a good nav. plan, equipment, training and ship...seasoned mariners will be successful. It takes a company that wants to walk the walk and not just talk. For large ships, even 25ft seas can be a problem. You have to have checklist to make sure all closures are secured, and many more items. Typically the Chief Mate should take a walk personally around the ship to check that everything is secured just before departure. It's a shame this occurred. People will make mistakes but it appears there was. lack of resources, maintenance, training and more. This incident has multiple causes.

Ship masters should be required to heed the advice of fellow officers, much like it is done on airplanes. CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT! Also, Tote's Director of Marine Operations should have intervened. The captain's poor judgment should have been obvious to anyone onshore following real-time weather for asking. Tote's management was obviously complacent regarding the safety of their ship and it's crew!

The captain's ignorance and selfish self belief that he knew better than anyone else on board the El Faro is obviously the reason the ship sank and he's responsible for the deaths of everyone on board. I can't understand how he could just ignore everyone else's serious concerns about the course the captain decided to stick to, surely the other people on the bridge would have a legitimate say in what course they would take seen as these are human beings risking their lives anyway, let alone in hurricane season.

There is no way that any Company will ever prohibit or prevent Your recommended route for safe passage. Never. And when comes to situation like that , when life's are at stake, and no commercial risk, You don't ask permission for adjusting or altering route.
