    Embarrassingly, I've somehow messed up Kaufman and Linklater - Linklater is definitely NOT involved with 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. Big mess up - apologies for the misinformation. 'School of Rock' is awesome though.

    He gives good examples of the laws of human nature, where characters are morally complex, and while some assume they have the best interest of others they can come of as projecting their beliefs onto them. Even tho its a vacation theres lots of need of power and control over others, based off of our biased beliefs.

    Just rewatched the series and I've been interested to hear what everyone thinks Season 3 will be about. I love that you pointed out how his influence and belief in other people started a chain of positive belief among his team, and yet leaves him at the top with nobody to believe in him or push him. I think S3 will contine showing his team thriving even moreso without him, and eventually Carmy exiting his career as a chef. He started his journey as a chef out of a place of bonding with his brother and it grows into a monster burden because of him continuing to crave validation from Michael. For Carmy to reach a healthier place, I feel he would need to either rewire his relationship to his profession, or find a more specific and personal way to contribute to the world - something that is chosen without the influence of unhealthy external desires such as proving himself to somebody else.

    In my experience The process of healing from trauma has many stages, the rage and grief, the retraumatization , the us and them where you try to spot a monster and call out every atrocity, (because it’s wrong and it breaks your heart and nobody cares, and what they did was wrong and shattered you, and the world keeps turning and it feels like nobody cares.) And lastly the obsession with the TRUTH. Which is where you trace every detail, every moment where you could have been colder, where you let them in, left your door open, said no but not the right way,….. etc It is essential for survivors to reclaim their truth. And the kicker is that there are many truths. The person who hurt you carries their own truth. It may not match up with yours, but that doesn’t change the TRUTH that your body knows. The person who hurt you, may carry their own pain and trauma, but that doesn’t make it ok for them to hurt you. That’s another very uncomfortable truth. We want a clear cut bad guy, a monster we can slay. When there is no head to display on a spike, no law and order ending credits, no justice, hell half of the people who find out will find a way to blame you for your abuse. In my experience they throw parades for abusers. The show beautifully articulated that no victim is perfect, no abuser truly evil. We’re just people. Scraping together and bleeding from wounds we pretend aren’t there. Another BRILLIANT show about this subject is I MAY DESTROY YOU on Max. Michaela coel never got her flowers for it, and it rearranged my soul the last time I watched it.

    great video ~ ! really appreciated how you put so many of my thoughts on this show into words, especially about how martha acts as the catalyst for what we see but the grander narrative really only revolves around donny and his subsequent coming-to-terms (or lack thereof). really interesting commentary on the way richard's reality bleeds into the writing and cinematography of the show to create such an uncomfortably vulnerable piece of fiction, it's been bothering me how the majority of people seem to be channeling a borderline voyeuristic and nosy intrigue into speculating the real-life counterparts of each character when it came to acknowledging the inspirations for the show rather than applauding gadd's ability to present himself so rawly in front of the camera. really amazing show that i never want to watch again

    I completely resonated with every word you said. I haven't been able to stop thinking about the show ever since I watched it. It was uncomfortable to watch because it was so honest. That almost took me by surprise. And that is also what I appreciate the most about the show. It wasn't an attempt to antagonize anyone, but to paint a very human story of a person who is still a work in progress. I am so in awe of how honest and raw Richard Gadd has been about his own feelings around this entire episode of his life. There were points in the show where I was angry or annoyed at Donny for the way he was behaving, and I eventually realized that that could be because it was a reminder of how I would have /have felt or acted in my own life. Definitely holds up a mirror for my own feelings.

    i haven't watched baby reindeer and decided to watch this video on a whim. i liked the explanation it was really good! im wondering what you think about the implications of everything the show covers in real life? i think the effect on the audience is the most interesting thing to analyse when it comes to the media we watch because, well, we are the audience. what makes a piece of media so special to people is the things we take away from it, what lens it provides us to see the world with, and to see ourselves with. i'd love to hear your thoughts and, once again, loved the video! 🩷

    • @lookasidefilms6614
      @lookasidefilms6614 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for your comment and for the great question. It’s an interesting topic: on the one hand, I think there’s amazing beauty in a piece that distances itself from the viewer and allows the viewer to observe it almost forensically. On the other hand, a piece that carries emotional weight almost always stays with us longer. And emotion is brought through touching the heart of the actual human observing. But I also think it’s very subjective looking at pieces like that because the way we experience a film or show is often based on external things too, like the environment we’re watching it in. BUT then again, at the end of the day, media is subjective… but can maybe be looked at through a general overall lens of objectivity. I hope that answered at least some of your question? 😅

    As a writer I have to say the dialogue in his movies is something I can only aspire to. I think the mundanity of many of the conversations taking place in his works settles you into the universe of the movie while also adding to the uncanny, uncomfortable feeling of being in that world. I feel like dialogue is so often sidelined for either show don’t tell-style, or it doesn’t add to the otherworldly feeling of a verse at all. Every element of his films feels so extremely harmonious. Truly a fantastic artist in his field.

    I love that The White Lotus season 1, with its low production budget, cast filled exclusively with under-the-radar actors, and not based on any IP or historical event won so many awards over the “Emmy bait” miniseries that are popping up like crazy.

      Are you calling Jennifer under the radar???

    • @Saigeee333
      @Saigeee333 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SaidaAlmightyy Jennifer was and is a star. At the time of her casting in White Lotus however she was not at a high point in her career. She’s said in interviews that it revived her career. Murray Bartlett, Sydney Sweeney, Lukas Gage, Fred Hechinger, and Brittany O’Grady in S1 were definitely “under the radar” at the time of being cast. Same for Haley Lu Richardson, Adam DiMarco, Leo Woodall, and Meghann Fahy in S2. Michael Imperioli hasn’t been as relevant as he is now (that relevancy being due to White Lotus) since The Sopranos ended 17 years ago. Compare these names to who you see in Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, or any Apple TV+ show (they tend to only cast A-listers) and they were definitely under the radar in comparison.
