Music for Chameleons - Gary Numan (bass cover)

Here's my far from perfect cover of this great bass line. Lots of cringeworthy intonation issues! I hope Pino Palladino never hears this butchering of his bass part....

As always alittle sloppy in places but hey - I'm not Mark King! Trying to get Mark Kings tone with 2year old strings was a bit of an ask but I did my best!

I'd never heard of this song or band until the bassist (Guy Pratt)from the record showcased it on his TH-cam channel. What an awesome bass line!

Alan Partridge approves
Fuck me is this guy good. That made the hairs on my neck stand up
👌🏻
What Bass are you playing ? It sounds great 👍
Thank you! It's Warwick Double Buck Corvette NT. 🙂
Nailed it!
Pino is the master.....
Dude what in the heck kinda pickups and preamp is in that bass??? Sounds unbelievable!!!!
Thanks! It's the stock pickups/preamp that comes with Dingwall Afterburner. FD3 pickups and Glockenklang 3 band preamp.
So... turns out Alan Partridge played this slightly wrong.
Hello is dewi luke friend good guitar 🎸 skills
Thanks Dewi - i like your channel too!
Great to have you back. You've not lost it yet!
Been looking for Dingwall users playing non metal stuff, this sold me! Is this an ABZ?
saw your post in basschat btw!
Thanks! Its a ABHS (Afterburner Heavy Solid). It definitely the best bass Ive owned and its very versatile. Sadly I no longer own it - a decision that circumstances forced on me and i thoroughly regret!
Simon and Pino for obvious reasons got along very well; two absolute masters in the rhythm section class.... Love their later co-operations which can be found here on TH-cam too. Can you imagine what a dreamteam was involved with this song ? I was less pleased with the live version however, more instruments were thrown in, and it became like an Art Nouveau piece of architecture just before the Art Deco break: very impressive for sure, but simply too much, too heavy, too everything... All of a sudden it became somewhat suffocating, and make me yearn for something less overcrowded and over-pompous. But the studioversion, woooowwwww... Nice to see how it is played on the bass, also had a look at the drum parts covered by a number of folks; it's breathtaking when you see more in detail all the things that are involved. It's one thing to be able to play it, but let's not forget the musicians involved also had to create or at least co-create their contribution. I assume Townsend gave both Phillips and Palladino all the liberty to experiment and come up with suggestions at least, maybe the complete drum or bass line from A to Z....
Sorry you have probably been asked hundreds of times. Do you have the tab for this. Can't find it anywhere
Sorry - I learnt this by ear and didn't write it down. I haven't played this song since recording this recording so I'd have to start from scratch.
No problem. I think I can figure it out. I was being lazy 😂
Hey there, wonderful effort. I wish I could be as close as you are of the "good" line. At least we can understand how accurate was and still is Pino. Quick question, how did you do your sound (I mean settings, effects if any, etc)?
Hi! Thanks alot! I was recording direct to the computer (using Reaper) and the I only effects I was using was compression/EQ (with a mid boost) using a Zoom B3. The bass is a Warwick Double Buck NT and and I was using the bridge pickup in 'parallel mode'.
Great job 👍 I think that’s the same bassist than Dalis Car, I forgot his name (my shame 😅)
The bassist of Dalis Car was Mick Karn R.I.P.
Superb 😊
I only knew of this song because of Alan Partridge 😂
Hi. It's how I first came across it too! 🙂
Great bass. The best cover of this tune I've seen was by Alan partridge.
Immaculate bro
I have always admired anyone who can play this bass line. And you play it brilliant 👏
What is your bass tone setup? It sounds incredible
Thank you! This was a while ago but it was the following as I remember - Warwick Corvette Double Buck with rear pink up in parallel coil mode. Slight boost to mids on the preamp. Zoom B3 for compression and amp emulation (Ampeg B15).
懐かし。当時よく聴いてたわ。40年前かな。
Well done you well worth the listen
nice
Where's Alan partridge?
Masterful!
Superb stuff, i'm jumping about like Partridge
Ah ha
Alan brought me here too
What are you talking about?? This is great! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Much more challenging to follow along than to originally record the part. You’re an excellent musician, with great feel 🌹
Really nice job!
Good!
Very good cover and great sounding base! I have a fretless base as well, but I cannot get this kind of sound out of it. Are you using any effects like reverb or compressor? Are you recording directly today computer or using a microphone and an amp? I’m finally what is the make and brand of your guitar? Sorry about all these questions but I really need help
Thank you very much.🙂 I was recording direct to the computer and the only effects I was using was compress/EQ (with a mid boost). The bass is a Warwick Double Buck NT and and I was using the back pickup solved in 'parallel mode'. I hope this helps.
@@rikkiboyes2830 thanks a lot for the reply. Means a lot! 🙏

Nice!. Do you have any effects on it?
I think I was using a Boss OC2 and some light compression
but you did very great :)
