Grange Over Sands, New Lido, Holker Hall, Ramsbottom Link
A walk around Grange Over Sands and its link with Ramsbottom & Helmshore. The local Lido closed for over 25 years gets a 6.8m makeover.
And a visit to nearby Holker Hall and its beautiful gardens.
Colonel Austin Townsend Porritt, born in Ramsbottom, had mills in the area including Sunnybank, Helmshore (see recent walk around Helmshore). He spent his final years at Yewbarrow Lodge in Grange. He made many contributions to the town and left his 15 acre estate to the people of Grange.

Lovely video thanks. Ramsbottom's great for walking. We did a walk a couple of weeks ago from Nuttall Park then along the disused railway path through Tottington and then back along the Irwell Sculpture Trail. We've been up Peel Tower a few times but never tried the other side of the valley towards Grant Tower. Maybe when the weather improves again!

I remember a coach visit and stay in Grange Over Sands a long time ago. Not visited Holker Hall though. Was that organ music inside the church or your own arrangements Steve? (Very impressive pleasant melody. Really liked). You had a lovey day for filming. Some lovely shots too Steve. What camera did you use? Nice jazzy/bossa style piano playing including a gentle piece.

Hi Shanita, Holker Hall was an interesting discovery, wonderful gardens. I wrote the church piece for pipe organ then copied the midi file and pasted it to the strings track to fill it out a bit, glad you liked it. Using two cameras at the moment, my favourite is the DJI Pocket 3, think I will be using that one for a long time, the one inch sensor produces great shots. Then some fun shots with the Insta360x4. I do wish they would stop tempting me with these new cameras.

I lived in Garden Street from 1989 for the best years of my life so this video brought a pang of nostalgia to me. The arched bridge just upstream of the mill is actually an aqueduct containing the main sewer from Rammy towards Bury. I was mountain biking past one day and I found it burst open with untreated sewage pouring straight into the Irwell. I phoned the water authority and it became a major incident, they lined the aqueduct with a pipe and rebuilt the stonework pretty fast. I was also there when the pub collapsed into the river, which was a merciful end for it because it had staggered from one existence to another for years as people tried different styles. I spent a small fortune on beer in there. When it collapsed the rumour was that it had been bought by a Mr Khan who was scheming to build apartments on the car park and hadn't got insurance on the building, so when it took away the bridge parapet Bury Council went after him for the cost of repairs. Dunno if that was the real truth or what has happened since. I used to love watching Pete Waterman's trains chuffing past my wondows at weekends and blasting into the tunnel. They were happy years.

We went on as far as Two Lads and a splendid view over Lancashire and beyond (having spoken to someone on the way who recommended the view), and then returned along Burnt Edge. I think we might be doing more in that area in the future.

I've been to the Haworth Gallery a few times, but all the other places in your film are new to me. You have a real knack of finding and showing interesting places Steve. Having driven through Accrington several times many years ago, before motorways, I have always thought of it as a grim industrial town with little of interest. But so many places have changed since then, and Accrington is a case in point.

Thanks for your comments Michael, I never know if it will be a good walk or not so glad you found it interesting, I did a lot of reading. Some years ago we visited the market hall and the architecture inside was a joy, I hope the refurbishment is done sympathetically. We enjoyed chatting with the locals during our walk especially up on the coppice.

One of us being a Lancashire lad, (Warrington when it was Lancashire) we have decided that we really need to do a tour of the county in our van this year. Just found your channel when starting to research and we have now subscribed. Thanks for this video as Silverdale is on our list of places to visit.

Hi Shanita, it turned out to be an interesting walk (you never know do you), and just 20mins drive to get there. In the summer I think there are two vans at the car park, one serving food, so a return is on the cards.

Super views, lovely walk. After a visit to Smithills Hall last summer, and a short walk from there, I've had the map out and been looking for longer walks from there. After seeing your film, I think it's only a matter of time before we start exploring more of the area up into the hills. The view from the lone bench was something to behold; I don't think I have ever seen a better-placed bench anywhere.

Hi Michael, we did a walk to Barrow Bridge last year, but the route to the 63 steps had been closed for repairs, so I made a note to go back. I also walked the West Pennine Way so am familiar with areas further north, but there is more around Walker Fold Woods that look interesting. I have no doubt you will plot an interesting route. Just looking through my ever increasing "to do" list for the next walk.
