Heat N Glo Fireplace Won't Light

The pilot would light but the flame would not ignite. This fireplace has an electronic ignition system with NO standing pilot. The control module and control valve are manufactured by Dexen. The orange wire to the valve controls the pilot flame and the green wire controls the main burner. This solution only works if the pilot lights, the spark igniter stops sparking, and the pilot flame stays l...

THANK YOU! It worked on mine!
Happy to help
12/8/24. I tried everything to ignite the flames including cleaning. The pilot light would light, but no flames. I followed the video and took a small wrench and hit the part shown on the video On the fourth time, the flames ignite 😊. I let it run and restarted it again without issue. Thank you! Vince
Just remember the other end of every tool is a hammer. Going to try this on mine.😎
The 1:28 time slot trick just worked for me too! Appreciate it !!
This video should be at the top of the search results. Thank you for posting. We've been in our house for 12 years and have never had a working fireplace until now. 😆
Wish I could give this more than one like. Tried everything, could not get to work. Saw this and was like not wasting anymore of my time will just call the tech. But decided to give it the whack and I’ll be damn if it didn’t work. Thank you sir.
Seriously?? It worked!
Dude I’ll add myself to all the comments that say I fixed mine like this lol😂
Awesome
Thanks for the Tip. Got mine going this morning with this trick!
I just tried this on my broken unit. It works now! What a great hack.
Crazy, isn't it?
Thank you, I spend an embarrassing amount of time researching and futzing with this. Turns out a little percussive maintenance was all that was required.
Most of the time
I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the pilot light flame. Seems to be slightly high-there is a small silver screw just below the pilot knob that is marked 'pilot adj'. I've turned it clockwise to where it will not turn anymore and the flame is high. I turn it back counterclockwise a 1/4 turn and waited a long time and still nothing. Any ideas? Thanks.
If your fireplace has a pilot knob, then you do not have this Dexen valve with intermittent pilot ignition. This video does not apply to your fireplace.
@@flueflame5438 Copy that. I was asking you just in case you had an idea about the pilot flame adjustment. Thanks so much.,
@@dag1972 If you have a standing pilot system, the pilot adjustment screw turned clockwise should reduce the pilot flame. If that does not work, you could have the wrong pilot orifice in for the fuel type. A natural gas orifice in a propane system will display a large flame. The gas pressure to the appliance could also be too high. The valve could also be worn out or the pilot flame could be exactly how it is designed to be. You could post a video of your system and pilot flame. I could give you a better answer after seeing it.
@@flueflame5438 I will try to do just that. Thanks so much!
Great video, this worked for me!
Thanks
Unbelievably easy fix! A couple of good smacks and the fire is going. Thank you.
Thank you! My Heatilator flame wouldn’t fire up. A couple taps did the trick!
I get 3.2v at the green lead, valve still not opening looks like. Smacking it didn’t fix it either. This is a 3 year old fireplace heatliator. Any suggestions?
Does the pilot igniter stop sparking while the pilot stays lit indefinitely? If so, smack the valve harder or you may have to replace the valve.
@@flueflame5438 yes the pilot igniter stop sparking while the pilot stays lit indefinitely… tried smacking it really hard but didn’t fix the issue. The ohms resistant reads 58.. very strange
Thanks! I was about to have a technician come look at my fireplace. The pilot light was arching and I had gas, but no flame. I came across this video regarding the possibility of a stuck gas valve. It’s comical that just tapping the control valve several times while leaving the power switch on actually worked. 👍
percussive maintenance
This worked for me but it seems I have to do it every time. Any other advice on why that may be?
check for proper voltage at green wire. Make sure the ground wire is secure to the fireplace body. If problem persists, you may need to replace the valve.
The advice from 1:28 timeslot of this video did the trick for me. Thanks a ton!!!!
Glad you found this useful.
I just got a brand new heat n glo installed. It lights and the flame comes on and then it dies down to like nothing and starts beeping at me. Could be the same issue? My landlord has left me high and dry
My Heat & Glo SL-750 pilot would not light. My inlet pressure is about 8iwc. I get no pressure on the outlet port. I also replaced the OEM Dexen module and I’m only getting 200mV at the green wire. The pilot barely lights and the spark is staying on even after getting a small flame. I’ve tried tapping many times but it hasn’t helped. Do you think I have multiple issues here?
200mv is not enough to open the pilot valve. In case this is a false reading, I would take the pilot assembly out and clean out the pilot orifice.
@@flueflame5438 ok thank you. I’ll check that. I just connected the original Dexen module and same thing… 3vac input and 200mV at the green wire with my black lead on the valve chassis. Odd that both old and new Dexen modules have the same reading at the green wire. Maybe a bad chassis ground?
There is a black wire in the control module wire harness. The wire is screwed to the fireplace body. This is the ground wire for the system.@@BigEasyPatriot
@@flueflame5438 I appreciate your help. I’ll remove the ground and see if it’s still making a good connection with the chassis. Fyi…I believe my system is from 2006. Might just be time for a complete upgrade 😂
Mine worked but than fire keeps coming on and off…..
clean out the pilot and check the flame sensor
Smacking it worked but the fire keeps going out and then on by itself. Any idea what the issue is?
What is the make and model number of your fireplace?
@@flueflame5438 I have a heat n glo SL-5-IFT with this problem plus constant beeping
I call that the "fonzi" method.
Mine pilot lights along with the main burner but then turns completely off and on intermittently, would that be the pilot valve sticking? I already changed the control module and the same thing happens.
The flame sensor may be the problem. check the flame sensor wire for continuity.
This fixed mine too! Thank you. Saved a service fee.
Im trying this tomm wish me luck lol
good luck
It didn’t work, i’m going to try the thermocouple next. Thx for the video
Thanks!!!! Gently knocking the right side worked!!!!
Great. Glad it helped.
Thanks real helpful thanks for saving me time and money 😊
I'm glad this helped you.
You are the man. This was exactly my issue. Appreciate your simple and straightforward video.
THANKS SOOOOO MUCH! Worked first tap on my 10 year old heat and glo wall gas fireplace
Crazy, isn't it?
I can only imagine the service tech send me out of the room first and then give the valve a good tap . He’ll then ask me to come back in and hand me the bill for $250 dollars. 😂😂 Thank you for sharing your expertise! Merry Christmas!
I always wait until the customer is not looking when I tap the valve. I then clean the glass and dust everything to kill time. My bill is only $159. Maybe I should raise my prices 😂🤣
BINGO!! This worked on my Heat N Glo Grand-i35 LP gas fireplace insert...AMAZING. THANK YOU!!!!!
Same @#$% problem and is giving the landlord fits. Where's my hammer? ok, screwdriver but ready for a mallet by now. Stand by ....
Thank you! This resolved my issue. Heat and Glo 6000 and just took a few taps. I had to turn it on and off a few times and tap the valve each time to get it to open on its own.
You’ve got to be kidding me! I worked cleaning my H & G all morning and it won’t work. I watch this and wack the side gently with a screw driver like this expert said and it came on immediately! 😳 I’ve always known that when you have a hammer, everything’s a nail. Thanks for the fix! Simply incredible. 👍
This is why I get paid the big bucks 🤣😂
Thank you for posting this video, I just attempted to light my Heat & Glo 6000 for the first time this season. The pilot lit but the fireplace would not light. Followed your directions and after several taps with the screwdriver I was about to give up and suddenly it lit. I cannot thank you enough for posting this!
I can’t believe this worked!!! Thank you!!!
Sometimes it's that simple. Glad it worked for you.
Thank you! My fireplace is a Majestic Ruby series Insert not a heatilator however I could not get a service call until January so I found your video and thought I would give this a try anyway and this worked exactly as you have shown for my Majestic insert as well. Thanks again for the solution and for saving me what the technician said would most likely cost $495.00 to fix!
I'm glad it worked out for you. Majestic was bought by Hearth and Home Technologies which also makes Heat N Glo and Heatilator. Their valves and control boards are interchangeable among the three brands.
You saved me hundreds of dollars. I was about to give up when I found your video. Thank you!
Thank you! Here we are in October and unable to get service call for the fireplace until January. Found your video and your solution worked exactly as shown. Thanks again!
I'm glad this helped.
That worked for me. Thank you!
This was hugely valuable! I was about to call a repair guy until I came across your video. You saved me the hassle and expense of finding someone to come out to my place.
Glad to help.
I have been in my house 3 years this month! It was fixed when I bought the house but I waited until the Fall to use it. It would not light across. Two of my neighbors have the same problem. After hours of combing through the internet, I found your video!! It lit right up and I spread the word to my neighbors! Thank you so much!
I'm glad you found this helpful.
Exactly the problem I was having. Proper voltage at the solenoid and about 58ohms resistance across it so everything seemed right. Just took about 3 sharp taps.
Your's was really stuck. Glad you fixed it.
Thank you!!!
Oh my goodness it worked you Rock Thanks so much for posting!!!!!!!!!
Glad to help.
Are you really fixing it? Bad solenoid, why not replace valve?
I used to replace them, but realized that the solenoid was not bad, the plunger was just getting stuck from lack of use. The valve replacement was around $300. Smacking it was saving the customer money. The valve can be replaced but I didn't feel it was in the best financial interest of the customer.
Russian components, American components...... all made in Taiwan! you smacking it reminded me of the scene from Armageddon at the end of the movie with the Russian cosmonaut smacking the engine with the wrench to make it work lol
Whatever works, right?
excellent video. I had the same problem and this video was my solution. I am very grateful
Glad this helped you get it working.
