What bothers me about Eustace Winner is that it's literally just the word "winner". They couldn't have at least spelled it "Wynner" or something? It's not even a pun or subversion, it's just the fucking word. I really feel like they could have been much more clever with it, the full name doesn't flow at all, it just looks and sounds bad in practice

You know, I'd like to believe if Donald Trump wasn't such a polarising figure in these times, Eustace would've gotten Trump as his official surname, since the word means to surpass or to succeed. Its use is especially prominent in card games, which when juxtaposed against the game's/Edgeworth's overt, obsessive, downright oppressive chess motif, it'd give this sense that Eustace can't keep up with Edgeworth because they are literally playing different games. It alsomd make that final moment of his character arc just that slight bit more poignant, where he was lucky enough to find the paper scrap in the trash dump, the literal Trump Card to put his father behind bars and setting Eustace on the road to surpassing him with no more turning back. Such a shame. A completely missed opportunity.

Byrne would be better for Blaise ngl but Kay's father claimed that already. Also they should've went with... I don't know, "Victor" or something along that maybe? It's still corny, but it's a real name, no? Except if they really wanted to double down on the "whiner" insult, they could've went with "Wagner". Unless they just wanted it to be ironic of course. The only problem with Eddie is that... just too common. Tateyuki Shigaraki is quite an unusual name.

Why didn't Edgeworth and Kay change their names as well?

To be honest, I think all the new names are fine. For Raymond Shields, when we think about it, it's just a regular name (Raymond) and "Shields" because he is an attorney and thus defends people, as a shield. It's not bad but we can't really say it's creative. The French name they came with for him is "Freddie Lapointe" which is horrendous. The pun is not very great ("la pointe" may refer to someone pretty good at his job but that's a very outdated expression), and it makes me think of "Bobby Lapointe" which was a French singer who was doing funny songs for kids. I would take Eddie Fender all days other this. 😂 Verity Gavèlle is a fine name. I think it looks a little weird with the accent but appart from that, I like it. And for Eustace Winner, I totally agree that his new name looks completely ridiculous, but I personally enjoy that because this character by itself is a complete joke, so I think it's fitting that he has a very stupid name. 😂 (I know he has a redemption arc at the end, but I'm too biased by the first 3 cases and I will always see him as the joke character of AA2)

Strictly speaking it was illegal to use the fan names (fanworks, even if they're not fair use still have the original aspects belonging to the creators), but I am going to miss them. I still wish they had come to an agreement to use the names, just like how the kotor2 restored content mod is worked into new ports of the game. But Japan doesn't have fair use and cross country copyright for unauthorized translations is extremely complicated.
