Recent Reads | AI, Fourth Wing, Smoking/Addiction
Hey Everyone! Happy June!
In this video, I talk about some recent reads across artificial intelligence, romance fantasy, and psychology/addiction. I do a bit of a deep-dive on the AI book (The Worlds I See, Dr. Fei-Fei Li), which I ended up talking about for most of the video. The other two books are discussed briefly at the end!
Hope you enjoy 🙂

Alvin Graylin or Fei Fei Li's book- not sure which to go for so far as my first AI book read!
Definitely want to check these out, thank you for recommending them. Have been wanting to get into Maya’s work for a while although I must admit gets me a bit nervous considering how heavy some of her work is but I know it’s an important contribution especially for me to explore as a black woman myself.
the taste levels are impeccable, what a great selection. If, like me, you find yourself reading Angela Davis's collection of essays and speeches and realizing you need more background on Palestine, I'd recommend 'Except for Palestine' by Marc Lamont Hill (US perspective), and/or 'The Hundred Years War on Palestine' by Rashid Khalidi (Palestinian perspective). The former will give a historical and political anthology that contextualizes the US's role and modern relationship with Israel and Palestine, past decades of US policy, practice, and attitudes on the occupation of Palestine, with a focus on the US's historical and political mechanisms by which Palestine has become an “exception” to our so-called progressive and liberal values. The latter will be more of a historical documentation of occupation from a Palestinian perspective. happy reading!
Will certainly check these out. Thanks again. Sometimes it’s really tough to just jump immediately into deep academic/political texts (like with Davis), having the background will be tremendously helpful. Looking forward to checking these out!
I loooove Ursula K Le Guin, and while I think the use of the traditional gender binary in the story is a bit outdated (even Genly at some points has trouble ascribing definitions that fit a male-female binary), as a lifelong Star Trek fan I absolutely loved the exploration of the process, ethics, and politics of First Contact, and I think for its time, the gender discourse must have been thought-provoking. happy reading Dolapo!
Agree so much with your thoughts re: Fourth Wing, and would suggest you not waste your time with Iron Flame. If you're looking for a similar YA fantasy vibe that's a breeze to read through, I'd recommend Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, it's King Arthur/Knights of the Roundtable retelling but set in the modern day American South. If you liked what Fourth Wing was attempting to do with creating this more brutal fantasy world but want the setting to actually have an impact on the characters/story/etc, I highly recommend the Fifth Season by NK Jemisin -- she's one of the most talented fantasy and sci-fi writers of her generation and I was just in awe reading the ending.
Hi @AlexATheEngineer ! Thank you very much for the recommendation! I picked up legendborn after seeing your comment last week and have been slowly making my way through the first few chapters. Loving it so far!
@@DolapoAdedokun fantastic, glad you're enjoying it so far :) it's been my go-to book to gift my younger cousins and they all come back and ask me if i can get them the sequel which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. happy reading!
I DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT FOURTH WIINNG! AAA! So many people loved it, and I enjoy reading it. But, the way she describes places is just so confusing. I couldn't form a clear picture of how places actually were and this is a fantasy, how should I imagine an entire new world if she doesn't describe it so well? hahaha I don't know. But I really loooved the dragons! Their relationship with their riders is so precious <3 (if I made any mistakes, I apologize in advance, I'm brazilian, English is not my first language)
Your hiatus caused me a great unease. Now I can breathe.. he's back. I wish you could do yt full time. But of course, life
Omg that was poetic hahaha. Thank you sm for watching!
I love your insights! You’re my favourite booktuber right now 😊🥰
Hey bro. I'm a new author and I recently self-published my first book, Quantum Interface. Set in 2057, it is an Afrofuturism tale infused with eroticism and adventure. If interested, I will send you a pdf copy.
You talked about the first book with so much passion I might read it! ❤
Welcome! *belated
Ah! So happy to find your channel! Welcome! Love what you said about being in an echo chamber. That's why I like to have a diverse group of Booktubers to follow--both in background and taste--and happy to add you to it! I'm hoping to be a diverse voice too--I'm obviously a white woman, but I have a lot of qualities that make my perspective unique. Love this community!
Awesome, thanks for participating in this tag. It's comforting and encouraging.
You had me at “expand past my current horizons” and “seek the widest perspectives”. Deep respect. Take me with you.
Well done
A beautiful, insightful video. I checked you out after hearing recommendation on young Englishwan' s vlog.
Really enjoyed your reflections on the books and linking that back to your life
Loved your reflections on legacy and thinking about ourselves more in the terms of community. I personally loved “The Dispossessed” by Le Guin, it was the first time I really saw anarchy and communism in a fictional setting. Lots of interesting ideas in that one, I’d recommend it!
Thank you!
Shawnacie recommended you! ❤
New Subbie! Shawnaci recommended your channel and yessss!!
Definitely agree on reading more slowly, something I need to work on, especially with works like Baldwin. I have a tendency to jump around and read lots at once, which can throw up some interesting comparisons but perhaps doesn’t go as deep
I thought Americanah was a great book. I've got half of a yellow sun on my tbr. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on these books, I always find your reviews so thorough and so interesting.
Oops I got a bit behind! Wonderful reviews as always. I adored all the parts set in Stamps in I know why the caged bird sings, but I found that in the later parts of the book, the pacing changed and didn't always work as well. The parts when she lived with her grandmother were so evocative. The part with the preacher getting attacked by the old lady in church was also one of the funniest scenes I've ever read! I would really recommend Mumia Abu Jamal. I love his work. I think death blossoms is probably my favourite, but I'd love to see you review his work.
Great to hear from you and agreed loved that parts with her grandmother. Thank you for the rec!
Hi.Nice to subscribe you from japan😊 i recently found you when i watching some Ocean Vuongs interview.im fun of his works. also i love le guens. if you have time. i would like to hear your reflection of these beautiful books. ・Red at the bone by Jacquline Woodson ・The buddha in the attic by Julie Otsuka Thanks for your beingness and please keep your booktube. thank you.
Thank you so much and for the recommendations. こちらこそよろしく!
Fantastic reflections! I always enjoy hearing how people relate to books because we all have different backgrounds and different books mean different things to us. I come from Finland so I would not be able to read Angela Davis and contextualize myself the same way you can so I love these types of deeper reflections that really showcase how you feel about reading her autobiography. Great video!
Aw thank you very much! Regards to you in Finland!
Love listening to you engage with the political works! Reminds me of the good parts of grad school 😆If you want more dragon books, you should check out The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter or the Fireborne trilogy by Rosaria Munda!
Thank you and thank you for the recs😊
Glad to hear you’ve enjoyed Angela Davis’ autobiography. I’ve read Freedom is a Constant Struggle - well, she read it to me on audio - and I was in awe, I just loved it so deeply. Will for sure find my way to more from her in the future! Sounds like a fab idea to do a little sth in London when you get there! I would have loved to join if I was closer! ☀️
Thank you!! Will do a more formal announcement soon!
First of all i would say you are good with literature. Secondly, i plan on starting a financial booktube soon and your channel is helpful. For the love of literature, you have one subscriber here. I appreciate your work, Keep soaring.
Thank you!
Great video as usual. Getting into reading now and your recommendations have been helpful. The meet-up idea sounds great and will be up for attending if available.
Thank you! Will make another video with more details about the meet up!
Always great to hear what you've been reading, Dolapo! I'm in London and I'd be happy to show you around, especially to some black-owned bookshops like New Beacon Books and Roundtable Books. Forbidden Planet is also a must if you want to get more into fantasy and sci-fi reads. Also, depending when you get here, you might be able to catch some of the book festivals! :)
Thank you so much! And thank you for the recs. I’ll look into these and probably make a follow up video about the meet up!
You seem like such a genuine guy. ❤ I live in Japan, so I can’t join your community but I would have! 😅 Also, you should definitely narrate audio books! Love your voice!
Thank you so much. And yes, lots of people have said that so I’ll have to look into it! 🫶🏾
Loved your insights! Super interesting :)
Thank you so much! 😊
Hey Dolapo! Thank you for another wonderful video. I would love to connect if you are in London! Plenty of wonderful bookshops here and if the sunshine can stay, many wonderful parks to hang out in too. I am really keen to get to Davis' autobiography. I recently read Women, Race and Class and found it incredibly informative and powerful. I am so pleased you're diving into Le Guin's oeuvre!! Her sci-fi is particularly poignant in its socio-political commentary and thoroughly enjoyable also. The Earthsea Quartet is a favourite fantasy series of mine too. Space Crone is a book which was recently published comprising of Le Guin's writings and speeches which show a wonderful insight to her background, thinking and evolution as a writer and person. Safe travels!
Hi Alex! Thank your for your comment! Yes, if you have any recs I would love to organize something! Also great on WRC, will be getting to that next. And wow, okay! Will definitely be checking out Space Crone!
@@DolapoAdedokun Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street is possibly the most beautiful, does a lot of fiction but is more of a non fiction, world literature and travel writing. Hatchards in Piccadilly might be the oldest bookshop in London and is worth a visit. Foyles on Charing Cross Road has a huge range of books and it's just a mammoth shop! Bookbar in Finsbury Park (a bit further away from the centre) is a bookshop, cafe and wine bar all in one with author discussions occurring often. Those being the main standouts centrally and places like Green Park, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park not being far away.
So glad I discovered you here on booktube! Love your voice 😭 Currently binge watching your videos right now!
Thank you for watching!
Hey, I'm in London and always up for showing people around the book scene. I love a bargain, so my specialty service is used book shops👍
Ooh! Would love to hear any recommendations!
@@DolapoAdedokun The best area to visit is definitely around Russell Square. They have great bookshops, such as: Skoob Book (big shop full of used books) Judd Books (new books but with extremely reduced prices) Gay’s the Word (independent bookshop of LGBTQIA+ lit) Black Books (used books, first editions, and beautiful and weird maps) The Maghreb Bookshop (it’s a lot of travel and academic literature, but the owner always has super weird recommendations that fit you just right) Waterstones - Gower Street (this is a regular bookshop with new books, but it’s huge and absolutely beautiful) So, all of these are in one area, but if you walk towards the British Museum, which is about 15 min away, you also get a few good bookshops - most significantly Oxfam (which is a charity bookshop), and London Review Bookshop (the curated selection in this shop is ON POINT). If you go, do take google maps though. It’s a beautiful area but there’s a lot of narrow little streets to navigate
Thank you for the excellent synopses and reflections on your recent reads! Angela Davis is now next on my list.
Thank you so much! 💫
i look forward to these updates!!
Thank you for commenting ☺️
I just finished /The Left Hand of Darkness/ this past week. I look forward to hearing your reflections on Davis as you continue to read. Blackwell in 1998 published a set of her essays in /The Angela Y. Davis Reader/. It's a good follow up to /Women, Race, & Class/.
Thank you for the recommendation, will definitely pick it up! Excited to read left hand of darkness soon 🎶🎶
More books added to my TBR. Really appreciated your reflections about how you want to position yourself in regards to balancing the self within the greater community construct. After decades of just going along with the typical American corporate capitalist life path, I feel like I’m finally starting to question if this is really how I want to live (answer-not so much). And I’m such a dork!-I read Wizard of Earthsea countless times as a kid but never caught on to the social commentary Le Guin was making. Great excuse to revisit it (and finally read more of her books). Thanks for giving my brain some great stuff to chew on. :)
Awww so glad you also have read it! Thank you for your comment 💫
I really enjoyed Fourth Wing! Definitely an addicting book for me and the dragons were my favorite part! Hope you enjoy it too 😊
Thank you! Really enjoying it so far!
Thanks for sharing 💛💛

I'm so glad that you are reading Ursula K. Le Guin! I've been recommending her to everyone these days. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Thank you so much! ☺️

I’ve heard good things about Dolly Alderton’s books.
Welcome!!
@RoisinsReading brought me here. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
I have I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings on my TBR. I’ve enjoyed her poetry, but never read any of her autobiographies, so looking forward to it. What little I know about her life is so interesting.
