Alvin Graylin or Fei Fei Li's book- not sure which to go for so far as my first AI book read!

Definitely want to check these out, thank you for recommending them. Have been wanting to get into Maya’s work for a while although I must admit gets me a bit nervous considering how heavy some of her work is but I know it’s an important contribution especially for me to explore as a black woman myself.

the taste levels are impeccable, what a great selection. If, like me, you find yourself reading Angela Davis's collection of essays and speeches and realizing you need more background on Palestine, I'd recommend 'Except for Palestine' by Marc Lamont Hill (US perspective), and/or 'The Hundred Years War on Palestine' by Rashid Khalidi (Palestinian perspective). The former will give a historical and political anthology that contextualizes the US's role and modern relationship with Israel and Palestine, past decades of US policy, practice, and attitudes on the occupation of Palestine, with a focus on the US's historical and political mechanisms by which Palestine has become an “exception” to our so-called progressive and liberal values. The latter will be more of a historical documentation of occupation from a Palestinian perspective. happy reading!

I loooove Ursula K Le Guin, and while I think the use of the traditional gender binary in the story is a bit outdated (even Genly at some points has trouble ascribing definitions that fit a male-female binary), as a lifelong Star Trek fan I absolutely loved the exploration of the process, ethics, and politics of First Contact, and I think for its time, the gender discourse must have been thought-provoking. happy reading Dolapo!

Agree so much with your thoughts re: Fourth Wing, and would suggest you not waste your time with Iron Flame. If you're looking for a similar YA fantasy vibe that's a breeze to read through, I'd recommend Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, it's King Arthur/Knights of the Roundtable retelling but set in the modern day American South. If you liked what Fourth Wing was attempting to do with creating this more brutal fantasy world but want the setting to actually have an impact on the characters/story/etc, I highly recommend the Fifth Season by NK Jemisin -- she's one of the most talented fantasy and sci-fi writers of her generation and I was just in awe reading the ending.

I DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT FOURTH WIINNG! AAA! So many people loved it, and I enjoy reading it. But, the way she describes places is just so confusing. I couldn't form a clear picture of how places actually were and this is a fantasy, how should I imagine an entire new world if she doesn't describe it so well? hahaha I don't know. But I really loooved the dragons! Their relationship with their riders is so precious <3 (if I made any mistakes, I apologize in advance, I'm brazilian, English is not my first language)

Loved your reflections on legacy and thinking about ourselves more in the terms of community. I personally loved “The Dispossessed” by Le Guin, it was the first time I really saw anarchy and communism in a fictional setting. Lots of interesting ideas in that one, I’d recommend it!

Definitely agree on reading more slowly, something I need to work on, especially with works like Baldwin. I have a tendency to jump around and read lots at once, which can throw up some interesting comparisons but perhaps doesn’t go as deep

Oops I got a bit behind! Wonderful reviews as always. I adored all the parts set in Stamps in I know why the caged bird sings, but I found that in the later parts of the book, the pacing changed and didn't always work as well. The parts when she lived with her grandmother were so evocative. The part with the preacher getting attacked by the old lady in church was also one of the funniest scenes I've ever read! I would really recommend Mumia Abu Jamal. I love his work. I think death blossoms is probably my favourite, but I'd love to see you review his work.

Fantastic reflections! I always enjoy hearing how people relate to books because we all have different backgrounds and different books mean different things to us. I come from Finland so I would not be able to read Angela Davis and contextualize myself the same way you can so I love these types of deeper reflections that really showcase how you feel about reading her autobiography. Great video!

Glad to hear you’ve enjoyed Angela Davis’ autobiography. I’ve read Freedom is a Constant Struggle - well, she read it to me on audio - and I was in awe, I just loved it so deeply. Plenty of wonderful bookshops here and if the sunshine can stay, many wonderful parks to hang out in too. I am really keen to get to Davis' autobiography. I recently read Women, Race and Class and found it incredibly informative and powerful. I am so pleased you're diving into Le Guin's oeuvre!! Her sci-fi is particularly poignant in its socio-political commentary and thoroughly enjoyable also. The Earthsea Quartet is a favourite fantasy series of mine too. Space Crone is a book which was recently published comprising of Le Guin's writings and speeches which show a wonderful insight to her background, thinking and evolution as a writer and person. I just finished /The Left Hand of Darkness/ this past week. I look forward to hearing your reflections on Davis as you continue to read. Blackwell in 1998 published a set of her essays in /The Angela Y. Davis Reader/. It's a good follow up to /Women, Race, & Class/.

More books added to my TBR. Really appreciated your reflections about how you want to position yourself in regards to balancing the self within the greater community construct. After decades of just going along with the typical American corporate capitalist life path, I feel like I’m finally starting to question if this is really how I want to live (answer-not so much). And I’m such a dork!-I read Wizard of Earthsea countless times as a kid but never caught on to the social commentary Le Guin was making. Great excuse to revisit it (and finally read more of her books). Thanks for giving my brain some great stuff to chew on. :)
