After a lifetime in the garden and kitchen, I'm sharing some everyday practical knowledge to inspire you to learn new skills, and hopefully show you how to avoid some of the mistakes we've made along the way, in 24 years on 5 acres in zone 5b in the inland northwestern U.S.
Things I tackle:
Gardening and harvesting vegetables, herbs, and fruits
Growing perennnials, annuals, and roses (antique and modern)
Greenhouse and seed starting
Herbs
Raised bed gardening
Canning, preserving, dehydrating, freeze drying
Cheese and butter
Making sausage, smoking bacon, ham, and salami
Cooking and baking
Beekeeping, honey and beeswax
Entertaining and catering for huge family gatherings
Wood stove cooking - because pizza!
Poultry and pigs
DIY home and garden projects
Knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, sewing, quilting
Random farm chores I maybe shouldn't do 😆
Also: I have zero tolerance for rudeness. Rude comments = instant removal without warning.

Plan a Garden That Will Feed You ALL Year
We eat nearly 100% from our garden canned foods year round, (except for fresh vegs like salads, in winter of course), and in this video I'm sharing my basic vegetable garden planning methods. After 24+ years on the same property, we're changing things up this year, so it's the same space, same needs, but a WHOLE NEW design and layout. I'll walk you through the records I keep, how I keep it organized, and more, plus here are some of my favorite resources for great organic and heirloom seeds:

That was very inspiring, interesting and informative. Thank you. I am just starting out on 26 acres so your experience is very helpful. My daughter also has just bought 25 acres so I will pass it on to her also. Being organized makes a huge difference.
Love this!!
I'm taking it as we speak 😁
Use in your hot toddy😊
Exactly 💯 😁
Very helpful share😊
Oh good, thank you! Happy to help! 😀
You can take those peels and candy them if you wanted to, to eat when you are over you're cold. I like home remedies. I'm saving your video in case I catch a cold and I will try this recipe. Thank you for sharing. ✨👍
Ooh good idea! I love candied peel! Thank you!
@@NorthwestSimpleLiving you are very welcome
✨️
I’m gonna make some of this. I got cranberries on clearance for .25 a bag. I usually just put them in sugar and freeze to add to my drinks.
😃😃 hope you love it as much as we do ✨️
Hi from south Africa...I like your pans..will you send me a gift of them...the cake looks great I need to start my own business...especially wedding cakes and birthdays ...thanks for sharing...
Thank you, so glad you liked the video 😀
Culver's butterbugers brought me to this well explained video
So happy you're here 😀
It is on my to do, but....... got about 100 things on that list. 😊
I got ours reserved today for April. 🐝✨️
Brilliant, I always am impressed how wedding cakes can be done so beautifully.
Thank you! ✨️✨️
Gotta say that I think there may be an easier method of waxing, and that is to perhaps use a smaller pot (or more wax) and hold the cheese vertically, and so dip half the cheese into the wax. You then allow the wax to harden and then dip the half you have not yet dipped , and you repeat that process two or three times to wax the entire cheese two or three times. Alternatively, if the cheese wheel is not really large you can hold the cheese between your fingers of one hand at the center and revolve the cheese slowly so that the wax coats the circumference of the cheese back to front and then you might brush the cheese with a natural haired paintbrush so that the top is completely waxed and then the bottom is waxed once the top has hardened/dried. Either method means that your hands, even if gloved, never touch the hot wax. The other thing you might do is use parchment paper rather than a cooling tray on your cookie sheet. The wax won't stick to the parchment paper and the paper will not create the indents that the rack does on the wax. Last point. If you have waxed the cheese, the humidity is the humidity INSIDE the wax sealant. You really do not need to monitor the humidity of your "cheese cave", and that wax will keep trapped any and all moisture that is in your cheese.
Yep, a deeper pan with a lot more wax would make this a lot easier, you explained it exactly 💯👍
Can you use sugar substitute like Splenda
I haven't, but someone here in the comments has posted their experience with substituting. Sorry, not sure how to find which comment, though 🙂
I think you’re pretty much a meat expert….lol
Haha omg thanks... except I don't know all the meat expert vocab 😂
We love making our own sausage too, but sadly, we don’t raise pigs, so we either grind commercial pork or purchase ground pork to make our sausage. Like you, we love being able to customize the spices and control the amount of salt. Do what you can to make improvements to your diet - right? Thank you for sharing how easy it is to make a superior sausage. Well done.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed the video. I do love knowing what is in our food, as much as we are able, and I love your idea - you don't have to raise pigs to do this 😀
What's good about this recipe you don't need to raise a pig to get this delicious sausage ,you can get it from your local store and add the ingredients I am at an age and where I live I can't raise a pig but I can use this recipe with plain ground sausage from the store I'd rather know what ingredients goes into my meat Thank you for sharing ! I will be giving this a try but with less ground sausage for it is just my husband and I
Yes! You can definitely size this recipe down for a single pound of ground pork, without needing to raise the pigs -, thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
How many eggs?
16. Full recipe is in the description 🥰
Interesting video. Havarti is a cheese I have yet to try, but here's a simple trick you can use when making washed curd cheeses like havarti or gouda: if you place the strainer you used later in the video (around 12 minutes) as the tool to separate the curds from the whey, you can more easily remove the whey without any fear of removing any curds. You simply scoop the whey from the strainer that you insert into the whey. The other trick you can use is to add some cold water if the temperature of the curds and whey goes higher than the maximum temperature you want (was it 97F? ) Simply replace all the whey with water at 130 F and if it's too hot, add cold water. If the temperature is too cold you can add some hotter water. The key processes are that you want to wash the curds so that the culture you added at the start are inhibited from transforming the lactose (sugars) in the milk into lactic acid: the more lactic acid there is in a cheese, the sharper the cheese will taste. The heat also tends to force more whey from the curds. This makes for a more firm cheese at the end of the day.
Thanks! Love the colander idea!
I LOVVEE RUSSIAN TEA CAKES
I knowww! It's not Christmas without them 🎄😍🎄
Gotta say this video is very inspiring to me. The struggle is real….to others as well as myself. I too have lots of dead to remove and weeds to pull and mulching to mulch. I too have lost roses but for me it was opposite season: we had temps of 120 degrees here in Northern California in July 2024. I lost an own root Alchemyste and Buff Beauty as well as newly planted in the spring Baronne Prèvost and Honorine de Brabant. I also lost a grafted climbing Golden Opportunity. All others made it but look a little worse for wear. I hope I can get out there in yard in January and February 2025 to do a good clean up. It seems we have a lot of varieties in common too. Just subscribed. I look forward to seeing your progress on their recoveries. Thanks for bravely posting an imperfect but still beautiful rose garden here on YT.
Thank you! Omg I've lost Baronne Prevost too. Lots of similar roses 🌹😍. Check and see if Roses of Yesterday and Today is still in business down there in CA. They may be gone but so many of my own root roses were from there, and Rogue Valley Roses... Hopefully in the spring I'll have some major improvements to share. I hope. But I hope that *every* year lol
I got ocean spray organic 'frozen" cranberries this year.
You have a beautiful home, made even more so, with your Christmas decorations!! Thanks for the tour! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you and yours! 🎄✨️
Love how many ornaments you have that represent special memories or stories. ❤
Thanks so much! It's all very sentimental✨️🥰
Magical ❤️
Best compliment ever! 🥰
Beautiful.
Thank you so much! 🥰
Lovely space. The memories from each piece is obviously precious to you❤ thank you for sharing a bit of it😊
Thank you! We really do ove every piece 🎄🥰
Love this idea
Thanks! It's such a perfect and practical gift 🎁
You are a very busy woman!!! I don’t know how you find time to do all the things.
Haha, thank you-- and this is my "slow" season...😉 😂
Hi, This is your most recent video I could find, and I want to ask you a question because you just seem to know all the different things that I like in life.❤ I always loved eating sour buckwheat pancakes. They're very thin. I have not been able to find out how to make the starter from buckwheat. My dear friend Lena passed away and she gave me the starter recipe. If you happen to have the recipe I would really appreciate if you would share it.
Oh dear, I wish I knew. I have a buckwheat waffle recipe, but I've never made buckwheat sourdough. It sounds good though!
Mmmmmmm. Sold, I’m going to make these.
They're SO good! 😀
My mom used to make Vienna tarts but her recipe called for cottage cheese instead of cream cheese. Since I can't find her recipe, do you think it would be okay to just substitute and equal amount of cottage cheese for the cream cheese? Thanks.
Not sure, but you could experiment with a half batch or so 😀
Last year I bought cranberries after Christmas because they were 1.00 a package at that time and since I live alone I wanted small jars 4oz so I could enjoy them all year long I am happy to say it was a big success and will repeat it this year. ❤❤❤
Good idea!
🌞🌞🌞
😁😁
I like this vid a lot! One thing I would do is to explain how to put the disk in the food mill. The rough side goes up! A lot of people get that wrong.
Mine doesn't have disks, but that's a good tip!
The threads on the jar are made at specific measurements that correspond to headspace for various canning recipes. Just fill to the correct thread
Thanks!! 🙌🙌🫶
We don’t do the canned stuff at our house. I make cranberry sauce with water, cranberries, orange juice freshly squeezed, orange zest, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and a half cup of red wine, or two shots of a black cherry whiskey. I let it just simmer on my stove until it thickens stirring occasionally. Measurements all depend on how tart the cranberries are and how many I’m cooking for. We love the chunky remnants of the popped berries. I can’t wait to try your cranberry butter!!!! This looks amazing!
Your recipe sounds amazing!
@ thank you!
MERRY CHRISTMASS~ ❤
🎄💫🎄
There is such a thing as organic cranberries. I find them in Trader Joes or Kroger in my area.
😀💫
You made this process less scary! I am going to try it! You are a great teacher.
I'm so glad to hear that! Happy to help 😄
I asked for a recipe withou dill but now u add dill very confusing
Yes, sorry, this is without *fresh* dill. I didn't mean to confuse you 💫
neat
Thanks! 💫
Helping my mom with canning has given me heat resistance, as my boyfriend likes to say. Heating the lids and cleaning the rims of the bottles with boiling water. The magnet trick tho is super cool
Lol I think I've gotten much more heat resistant fingers over the years too. 😅
Whyis this called butter not jam
Jam is made with pectin usually and more fruit solids and butters are fine textured spreads made with pureed or seived fruit pulp that is cooked with sugar to a smooth spreadable consistency.
😊wowzer! I've never made that candy before. I'll have to give it a try😊
It's really nostalgic for us, tastes like...airy toasted sugar 😋
If you have one near you, Trader Joe’s has organic cranberries.
Thanks! I need to widen my circle next year and hit the bigger organic markets 😄
Never thought of cranberry butter. I've made pear butter & pumpkin butter. Both very delicious. 😊
Definitely try cranberry 🤩
excellent video & I wish I could taste it right now!
It's so good! We're using it up on toast for breakfast 😋
Would you mind sharing the quantities and the recipe?
I wish I had time, but the recipe is very long and detailed, and for the next few weeks I'll be too crazy busy and not at my computer, so sorry! There may be one on cheesemaker.com though 😀
I put my rings and lid in the dishwasher, and they come out hot . I just then pull them out and place them on jars . I can with water baths. I have my mom's food mill. I only use it for concord Grape jelly. I use to make a cranberry/ apple chutney years ago. I can soups and spaghetti sauce. I love to can. I always make candy and my Swiss grandmother's cookies and give away for the holidays. I am going to make this to use as hostess gifts.
Oh good idea!
