Music Hard Drive For Mazda 3 (and other cars with no CD player)
Automobile manufacturers have begun distributing vehicles that are no longer equipped with CD players, not even as an option. My external monitor is not on clone screen mode. Do you know how I can get it to clone screen mode because the main laptop screen is white like yours I cannot see the menu to change the settings from the external screen to put it on clone screen mode if that makes any sense 😀

Do you know if when playing off yet he hard drive the system adds a gap between songs? I am trying to achieve gapless playback and wondering if your solution will have that.
Hello. Just saw this now (haven't checked in awhile). I'm afraid you won't get gapless play, at least I don't with my Mazda. Unlike with my home PC/laptop, the system doesn't appear look ahead to the next song and preload at least a portion of the start of it into memory to achieve that effect. I still have the same hard drive, but am now using it to store the master copies of my music. I've now just recently purchased a Samsung T7 SSD for my car, no bigger than a credit card (but about 1/4 inch thick). I've spent the better part of the last year digitizing my large vinyl collection (got expensive buying CDs of the same music I already owned), and found with the hard drive, as more files were added, it would take increasingly longer before music would start playing. I hoped the SSD would eliminate that wait -- it didn't, but it is faster in responding. Since hard drives are more reliable, I now use the hard drive as my backup/archive. Note, that if you have a vinyl collection and a decent stereo and turntable, I can highly recommend the Focusrite Clarett 2 Pre USB to convert the analogue music to digital, and Audacity for recording and editing. Its ADCs (analogue to digital converters) are excellent. I figured that if the raw source of music -- the musicians -- choose it to convert their vocals and the sounds from their analogue instruments to digital, and give the device such high praise, then it should do a good job with one's record collection: it absolutely does.

Sorry to say this, but the issue you were having wasn't the screen being bad, but a loose display cable. Have you tried putting the old screen back in and checking if the problem went away?

screen was dead on my I5 asus. just took the whole screen assembly out and tucked the wifi antennas around the outside edges of the base. Removed the battery and plugged up to tv. Added wireless keyboard and viola, budget upcycle HTPC.

Colin, thanks for the heads up on that! Since it would just be adding a software driver to their operating system (which I'm guessing is linux-based), it should be possible to offer it to older vehicles through a firmware update to the entertainment system. In fact those brave enough to hack their vehicle's operating system have done it themselves: mazda3revolution.com/forums/2014-2018-mazda-3-skyactiv-audio-electronics/117162-media-flac-support-track-ordering.html Next time I'm at Mazda for servicing, I'm going to have to ask how I can push for this. I've now been using my hard drive for a couple of years without problem, but this would make it possible to pack a lot of lossless music on a flash drive that you carry on your keychain. Always with you when you drive, and with all the metadata including the album covers.

Great tutorial! I opted for an SSD. Hope there will be no issues with it! Just out of curiosity, how many songs do you have and how long does it take to load your music? Secondly, I would much rather use the song metadata from the MP3 ID3 tag instead of Gracenote. Does killing the gracenote update midway have the potential to damage anything? I'm going to try this on my 2017 CX5. Hope it works!
Hello EOS1, Sorry for the long delay in replying. My channel was messed up somehow by Google changes. In response to your question about number of songs, I can only give a ballpark guess. With hundreds of CDs loaded, I expect that I have at least 4000 songs with plenty of capacity remaining on my 1TB hard drive. These are almost all in WAV format which require much more space than compressed and lossy MP3s. The metadata from your MP3s will definitely appear in your Mazda entertainment system, including any CD covers. With WAV format, you'll get artist, album and song name, but no CD covers because the JPEG images get stored in user-defined tags within the metadata, and not in a standard tag like in the MP3 (and FLAC) metadata. So while the images will show up on your PC when playing a song through something like Foobar2000 or viewing through mp3tag, they won't display in your car. Killing Gracenote does no damage. I've had to disable it a few times, usually after a visit to my Mazda dealer for regular maintenance when they restore it. By the way, I've now been using my hard drive in the car for 2 years with no problems, even through cold winters. So you should definitely have no problem with an SSD (other than paying a premium for storage space to get one large enough for a big collection). Just remember to format as FAT32 so it that it looks like a flash drive to your car's computer.

If the cable was defective would you have had to break down the entire laptop?
You definitely have to remove the screen, but I don't think you have to open up the base of the laptop (not certain, though). The cable is about 8 inches / 20 cm. long, so can't travel too far. If you look at about timestamp 14:50 in the video, at centre-left, I believe that might be the other end of the cable. If you look at the image of another Asus laptop model at the link belo, the video cable is about the same length as mine and appears to be plugging into a port at the corner, much like what you see at time 14:50 in my video. www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Asus-K53U-screen/replacing-asus-k53u-screen-14.jpg
