I recently installed two SKF 22218 C3 bearings with tapaered sleeves, and no where on the SKF website could I find the clearances. I checked two other bearing manufacturers and they didnt list clearances either.

In the real world you would just pack the bearing out with grease, install on the shaft with the tapered sleeve to the desired position on the shaft, install the tab washer, get the lock nut as tight as possible with a hammer and a drift then knock the tab down on the washer into the nut. Pack the housing with grease and then sit the bearing back down into the housing. Check the shaft spins nicely. Jobs a good'n.

Venturi high speed fans for exhaust is where I see this the most. 4" shaft the biggest so far. Remember to have the fan clean and balanced once twice a year

I’ve never tightened a bearing outside of the housing. While working on site it’s almost impossible to do so. Also for the floating bearing you have to make sure you account for the taper lock and the fact the bearing will move on the taper. Has to be almost pushed to one side in certain situations so the bearing has room for expansion side to side

Im a bit split about the explanation about re greasing, allowing the grease to seep through the seals. As these seals are basically single lip clip fit seals, wouldn't this method of letting grease seep through press the seal out of its holding lip and just be protected by the metal dust cover, thereby forcing the grease via centrifugal force through the opening and letting the bearing run dry prematurely. Very nice video on the basics of fitting bearing units
