7 free VST Plugins for your Harsh Sci-Fi tracks!
Hey, thanks so much for taking the time to do this! I appreciate the kind words and I'm really glad to hear that you like it. I'm gonna address some things you mentioned: 1. Favorites - This would be a great feature! Unfortunately I'm bound by the limits of the program I used to make this, so that might not be possible just yet. :( 2. The ADSR controls are a little touchy - I do plan to make them a little less so. 3. In a recent update, I made some of the knob fills a little thicker so that it's easier to see. 4. The reverb is not *technically* 1:1 with the PS1. It is however a similar algorithm and so it's very reminiscent of the PS1 and the Sega Saturn without directly copying either. Leaving the damp turned all the way down gives you the most authentic sound. 5. Evil Pig Guy shipped broken, and I am so sorry about that. It's fixed now! The add-on is free if you've paid for GuyEngine, but there is an expanded version that includes more instruments if you want to spend a couple bucks. 6. Full disclosure, I am a musician/sound designer and not a programmer! All of the samples in this are meticulously hand-crafted and intended to act as a unique alternative to video game soundfonts. Most of the sounds in those soundfonts are owned either by the game's publisher, or by major synth/DSP companies like Roland, and Korg. So GuyEngine is a safe alternative for folks who want to make 32bit game music without fear of being copyright smacked. I feel like people use soundfonts specifically because they capture a specific vibe, and because they are free and accessible. I made GuyEngine $15 because I wanted to maintain that accessibility. Yes, a ton of work did go into this, but the overwhelming positive reception and kindness that I've received as a result of this work more than makes up for what I might have gotten from a $30 price tag. Thanks again for doing this, and I can't wait to hear what you make! - side note, I am going to be doing a community showcase where I play a bunch of tracks made by folks with GuyEngine. If you're interested in that, please submit one and I'll share your name and socials while your track plays!
Thank you for the reply! I'm on vacation till Jan 4th, would that be to late to submit something? And how would I submit, via email?
@TurtleBoxOfficial No rush! Email works, or discord!
Mic audio in this video is quite low, didn't realize while I was recording. 1. Mic was facing the wrong way (omegalul) 2. Recorded this at 3am so I could sleep in
Thanks for sharing this. Great for lots of stuff, especially music for media.
Yes! I agree!
90gb of free content? Where? I have a few freebies and bought a few things but I don't think it's anywhere near 90gb. It doesn't really matter though, better to have a bit less content that's great than 90gb of whatever (not saying SP content is the latter).
Every single pack for soundpaint that's free adds up to 90GB. Some of the Ambience / Drone packs alone have instrument bundles within them that are around 1GB each, I know the Violins, Cellos, and Bases from Adastra String's are each about 1.2GB. So that's just counting a few instruments itself. With 13 free packs on their site, and each one having around 8-10 samples within, and each sample being close to 1GB, it's not hard to see where the file size comes from. Beautiful Noises (Bundle) is something like 65GB. Soundpaint libraries are massive, to the point where it's the one thing I would critisize about the option as a free tool. It's a double edged sword for smaller producers / composers to have to manage massive installs
@@TurtleBoxOfficial Thanks!
How do you download the free library of instruments?
Off their website. Once you make an account you just log in, select the packs you want, then when you open the software you're able to just mass install every fgree thing at once.
thanks m8, cheers
wow how tf is this free?!
Insane, right?

The GOAT - th-cam.com/video/O-MQC_G9jTU/w-d-xo.html
Check out @Sountpaint today! Highly recomment browsing their site and picking up an insane 90GB of free instruments and ambience while you're there.
Do you know any plugins that can give drums a more metalic tone?
Depending on your DAW and your budget, I know a lot. Ableton has Corpus (I think it's called) which basically just adds a lot of texture and solidity to your sound. A Non-Ableton alternative to this is AAS, Chromaphone. It's about 89$, but it does the exact thing but with more paramaters to adjust and better presets. A free way to do this would to just be layering over metal pings into your bass drum track, and matching the pitch. I do this for some tracks on ObScurus and In a Time and a Place. The drums for this track were layered with sampled glass breaks to thin out the snare and the let me just sub out the entire bass end - turtlebox.bandcamp.com/track/samm You can do a lot of weird stuff with good samplers, including entirely altering the tone of drums.
I apologize for the weird mic audio in this, my mic was facing the wrong way and I have a cold. Also I apologize to everyone's ear for introducing them to Blood Bucket.
Guess you could say this is proof of concept ;)
Just started the game with the shinobi class and jumped Into the place straight away...
Yes, any class can make the jump if you pixel boost.
I instantly recognized that radio noise sample. Silent Hill (1-4) is my favorite horror game series
It's actually a super old sample! It's the "Radio Static Danger" audio, - th-cam.com/video/_T3RjLpA7t8/w-d-xo.html It always blew my mind how it's literally just a sample of someone tuning and scanning a radio. It wasn't ever pitched as this horror / evil sound, it was meant for just ambience. Akira Yamaoka just High Pass filtered it and layered it a bunch. In an earlier video I showed a plugin called VHS Noise Generator that basically creates tones of Radio / Tape Magnetic effects, you should check that out too!
Will do! I'm getting curious about building ambient horror sound

thank you! that helps a lot actually 😭
I can do a more in depth video on that sound you were talking about specifically if you'd like.
@@TurtleBoxOfficial you'd really do that? 🙀🙀🙀

More great suggestions. Only on the first one and karp sounds lovely! Will definitely be getting these, thanks. Hope you feel better soon
Karp is truly one of my most favorite pad designing tools of all time.
@@TurtleBoxOfficial it's beautiful sounding for sure. I'm definitely going to get it!
Exscuse my voice in this video, I'm still quite sick and have been since last week! Enjoy the content though!
there is a mod that gives you regen that scales up as you up your res till you hit 100 were it turns off and lets the normal regen take over
I made this video way back in feb 2023, a few months before the game even came out and a few months before the mod.
@@TurtleBoxOfficial was more just mentioning it as it feels a bit better sense you get 1 regen for each 10 points in res XD (i like that there is a regen but i do wish it kicked in even at half power sooner cuz 100 feels a bit unneeded for non speed runners XD
That's might be just me, listening 4 on the floor every day, or this is what real art sounds like - the ability to grab few weird soundscapes and make an album (EP) with them. Thank for sharing a unique perspective on a challenge/music!
To be entirely fair I didn't grab any sounds for this, they're from my own sampe CD which I released last week. I'm happy the timing lined up, a day after I released the CD a project went up and I decided to throw together this EP the saturday after the CD dropped, then made this video the following Sunday. I'm really glad you love this, It makes me very happy.
@@TurtleBoxOfficial To clarify, by "grab" I meant "choose/pick", which is a skill of its own considering how much stuff is out there.
Why is there an adv if your channel isn't monetized

Hypnotic and beautiful.
Thank you! I'm very glad you enjoyed it.
Really great guide!! Very good job!!
Very cool, I didn’t know of these plugins (except for Supermassive which I have and of course, love). Some great pads here, I have some new plugins to check out, thanks.
I thought of using a different reverb like Waterverb or PSXverb but those are kind of complicated so I figured I'd just go with something I know everyone either knows about or already uses to keep it simple and quick.
Could tell these were Windows only from the design alone
Windows plugins always have that look to them, don't they lol
The promised H.G. Fortune video! 😄Again a good demonstration of the gems - and the link you provided is SUPER, for within is included the Tiger Pro, a VST that was so hard to get earlier. Thus his memory and legacy is kept alive forever... Thank you for the upload! 🤟
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll do more H G Fortune stuff in a later video.
I prefer the original.. sounds good but didnt get the original vibe...
I prefer the original too. I'm not trying to replace the originals or anything, just create a rescore in my style.
Plugins4free is always a good source for classic vsts. This vid made me unzip my "legacy" vst storage just to see what I still had. I still have all My HG plugins!
All the new HG Fortune stans shedding light on the early days of wild/crazy VST plugins. I wish you all could discover Humanoid Sound Systems Scanned Synth Pro/Enzyme, but those were paid and required license key files, and the company did not update them to be used without it when it went under =( They were linked to Camel Audio, who Apple bought for Alchemy and then made it Logic Pro-only. I should install Enzyme and see if it still works >_> XD I think the HG Fortune stuff would be great to make sample libraries with
@@Emily_M81 I thought about doing a video on Camel audio and Alchemy when I recognized it on Hark The Ghouls soundtrack. Sadly I don't want to knowingly make a video on something that's incredibly inaccessible
@@TurtleBoxOfficial I completely get it. I still have not forgiven Apple for buying my favorite synth and making it Logic-only LOL. I've been tempted to learn Logic just to have access to Alchemy again, but I no longer use Macs, either. Sadly, the Humanoid Sound Systems stuff is just gone :(
Windows only.... Shame. 😕
Sadly I'm on Windows. I'll try to make it clear if things are Windows Exclusive or not from now on.
looks like a pretty cool game
5:40 I think it’s just «spot on», lol.. as in hitting the key spot on. Thanks for the VST tips man.
I think that's my favorite part about the video, is my stoned ass unable to see the word "spot on" and say it without thinking it's meant to be pronouncedin some weird whacky way
@@TurtleBoxOfficial Lol!
Love it. Pleasantly quirky.
Just so you know..these are 32 bit plugins and you might need to use a bridging program, like Jbridge, to get them to work on a 64 bit system..which most PCs are these days. I'm sure some daws will automatically run them as is..but usually you need to bridge them to get them to work.
I explained this in another comment, but this is specifically why I use Bitwig. I talk about in some of my other videos how a lot of the plugins I wanna show folks just don't really work right these days, and your options are have Bitwig or use a bridge. I don't personally think it's that big of a deal if that's fair. It's a lot more fair than people who make videos about Free Plugins and not disclose that they all need paid services or are only Demos and stuff. 32 vs 64 is a pretty okay price to pay in my opinion.
Hey..I totally agree with you..and my apologies if my post gave the impression I was being negative in any way. For the record, this was the first video of yours I've watched, so I have yet to read the post of yours you referred to..but yeah, I also have a ton of old 32 bit plugs that I still use today..many of which still give modern plugins a run for their money when it comes to quality of sound and over system footprint size! Anyway, thanks for the video..seeing both of these again was a real blast from the past. 😉👍
@@Dan_Corkery I got no negative impression at all! Sorry if I came off that way. I actually have some motor function damage, so while I talk like a goof in real life, I actually type how I think in my head which leads to sometimes weird tones or over explaining. I'm glad you got a reaction out of the videos too, I ended up covering the Swamp synths from the same developer a week after this video and had a lot of fun with those too.
Thank you for sharing. My Ableton cannot play the older plugins but i can play them in Cakewalk and the free Tracktion Waveform 😊
Always happy to share!
yeah a lot of these old plugins are 32-bit only due to age, and Ableton Live doesn't bridge 32-bit to 64-bit
HG Fortune takes me back
Yeah, I'm happy a lot of people requested this and that I have these to provide demos for.
No worries, I just turned up the volume a tad. I’ve done that too and realized I was even quieter than usual. New to your channel, Thanks for some recs on new free plugins. I am a Bitwig user too and it’s alwayd cool to see and hear how others use it.
Inspired me to create; thank you a whole bunch. The SwampXT is cool as fuck, I also used Dream Machine three and atanoise - P. I specialize in paranoid-freak music, and all these H.G Fortune plugins are AMAZING for that - i fuck wit FULLY. The low E string on my cheapo guitar is broke but these things carried me through like four hours in a daw
Hey I just wanted to really let you know how much this comment means ot me. Thank you so much.
Cool video. Why do you use bitwig btw?
I've actually been using Bitwig since it came out, and only because I feel like it's the only DAW that actually manages experimental music very well. There are a ton of built in features in Bitwig that allow you to just endlessly route and create modular paths in ways other DAWs struggle and even limit you.
@@TurtleBoxOfficial I use Ableton, and with Max for Live, you can do a lot-more than in Bitwig, in my opinion. Even with Ableton's stock plugins, you can create some really cool experimental stuff. I'm really into IDM, drill'n'bass, circuit bending, and experimental music overall. I tried Bitwig before but didn’t find anything innovative enough to make me switch besides the grid. As a Bitwig user, can you tell me what you find cool about this DAW?
@@кук-б2з Bitwig doesn't Crash when a VST sandbox crashes like Ableton. Bitwig contains VSTs into individual spaces prevent this from happening, as well as to save a lot on PC resources, which ultimately allows you to run more plugins and VSTs than other DAWS can handle before starting to lag out. Bitwig being sandbox based means it's opening every instance of a plugin, stock or otherwise, into it's own individual container, meaning it's possible to open something like a Juno VST with one Oscillator and start slapping on as many as you want. I can open a MicroKorg VST with two Oscillators, quadruple that to six, and then give each of those Oscillators their own EQ, Reverb, Compression, ect. No other DAW works like this because no other daw (except maybe reaper with it's container system) can reach that output without major CPU usage and high risks of crashing and needing extreme automation. Bitwig has a really sharp learning curve, I don't recommend it to people ever. It's just something I've been using since 1.0 and I originally only stick with it because I think it's Workflow customization is the best out there. I really don't like messy Workflows, so being able to clear EVERYTHING except the Timeline and my modulation is perfect for me.
I'm just now realizing this video isn't equalized and is super low volume. Really sorry!
Cool stuff, didnt know these before
Make sure to Subscribe to keep up to date with more of the weird plugins I yap about!
I really like the vibe!!!!
