I like my self-cleanig oven. One drawback is that that the door frame inset to the stove chamber does not get hot enough to burn away the glaze. Oven cleaner will need to be clean that.

Don't blame inappropriate application of a cleaning or sanitizing product on the product itself. That's like someone ruining their car by adding way too much oil and concluding oil is bad.

You know I am so glad to find out that I am not the only one opposed to tile countertops because of the unsanitary nature of the grout between each tile. I'll be honest though, I had NO IDEA that there were people who put ceiling fans in their kitchens! :O

People who vacuum without keeping watch on their cords give me SO MUCH ANXIETY. I once had a vacuum that my mother was using and she sucked its own cord up, and caused it to shred the protective coating and start sparking on the chassis of the vacuum. It was a metal vacuum mind you.

Also, I have to point out that air dusters do NOT leave behind a silicone layer. They would damage electronics if that were the case and are instead commonly used by computer repairmen. I'd definitely agree on being cautious with it around wood furniture, however. There is a liquid propellant in the cans that can sputter out if the can is shaken while using it or if the can is turned upside down and that propellant will etch into your wood and leave those white spots you mentioned. Again, it's a case where I still agree with your advice as it's better to be safe and just avoid using canned air as a dusting method for furniture (especially since it will send dust everywhere thus ruining floors and nearby objects), I just wanted to add clarification.

I am a huge fan of bleach, I love the smell of it when I am cleaning, but I'll concede that you are 100% correct on its corrosive nature. It will certainly shorten the lifespan of coated products and even damage surfaces it is applied to! Some of this can be fixed by proper dilution, but I still always recommend caution with bleach. Using oven cleaner on a self-cleaning oven is definitely a no-no as well and I'm glad to see someone else pointing that out! I prefer cleaning with oven cleaner and am paranoid about self-cleaning functions on ovens (unrealistic fears) so I purchase ovens without the self-cleaning function which are made without that same coating.

Drain cleaner eating away at pipes is a bit of a myth as well, but routed in some truth. There are drain cleaners you can buy which are safe for PVC piping, but most of the high-grade drain cleaners will definitely eat at your pipes. I haven't found a drain cleaner that works for cleaning hair clogs though, so I wouldn't recommend anyone even attempt it in the first place.

You're correct about using bleach. My son uses it to sanitise the toilet. I hate it because it burns the throat when you breathe and burn your eyes. There are alternatives but I'm not sure they're much better. There has to be a cleaner that cleans surfaces without pollutants. For getting rid of mould use an anti-fungicide which is more effective and lasts longer

Ive been looking for so long for a viable peroxide based replacement for bleach at work. But the ones available at our suppliers always have bright dyes in them that stain surfaces forever if you leave them on for more than 2 seconds. It's so frustrating. Id like to phase out the bleach cause i feel like the chlorine is eating my lungs and brain but i can't because that will leave me with either pink or blue bathrooms.

Bleach is great. If it destroys your bathroom tiles, you are using it incorrectly. You only need about 1 part bleach on 999 parts water. Also, the only "product containing bleach" that wasn't actual bleach that I've ever seen on the shelves were abrasives. You don't want to use abrasive cleaners on ceramics. Bleach does not damage ceramic tiles, but abrasives do.

So I switched. But tbh I never noticed bleach affecting finishes. But I didn’t use much; I suspect those who were ruining their tubs and counters after just a few years were using way too strong of a solution.

We have very dark gray Corian countertops. They really could re-polishing after 25 years. Would I choose them again? No. But I also wouldn’t choose honey oak cabinets. There’s a Formica pattern I’ve been eyeing…. But streaking has never been a problem. Ceiling fans do get fuzzy. But 100° temps for days on end require them. They make dusters for them to keep the fuzz in control. Full scrub in the spring and fall.

I ended up chemically burning my lungs from using too much bleach, which turned into pneumonia. I've mostly avoided bleach since then, only using it very occasionally for stained tea cups or coffee mugs, and even then I use a small amount in water and am careful not to use my bare hands or to get my face too close. I much prefer Barkeeper's Friend instead of Ajax or Comet. It's really amazing. And it gets the stains out of white sinks which not even bleach can do. It can also mend small scratches in your stove top. I don't have a modern oven, nor do I have the manual. I rent, and this oven is very old. I'm quite sure the manual was thrown away long ago. But I don't use the spray oven cleaner, because I can't remove the element at the bottom, and I don't know if it would ruin it. I also can't remove the door of the oven. So essentially my oven just stays dirty. But it doesn't get more dirty over time, because I make sure and place everything on a baking sheet if there's any chance it might spill over. I just keep wishing for it to quit working so my landlord will have to get me a newer oven that will hopefully be easier to clean. But since it's so old the damn thing will probably last forever.

Leave it for like an hour then come back and wipe + scrub(I don't do too much but like 5mins with a rag helps a lot). This is typically bad advice. A bag full of white vinegar shouldn't be your first step. It's a faucet aerator - just grab a wrench and unscrew it and drop it in a little glass of white vinegar and go do other work and come back and it's all set. The bag of vinegar has the possibility of wrecking the finish on the faucet and then you have another handful of trouble. I literally just did this in my kitchen faucets a few weeks ago. And for those of you saying "what if you don't have the right wrench?" It should be part of your bag. I mean you have Barkeeper's Friend...

    • @CleaningtheECway

That is very good advice. I am at a client's house, and I can't take apart their faucet, I am not a plumber, and even more, I am afraid of causing damage. Typically, when I soak something in vinegar, it is only on the area that needs the buildup to be broken down and not the entire faucet.

Fellow cleaner tuning in for the first time! I can't agree more. 1. Tile countertops ✅ I completely agree and raise you "basically all tile everywhere" 😅. Kitchen countertops are the worst offenders. Followed by shower floors, shower walls, and stove back splashes. Bigger tiles are better than smaller. But they all kinda suck to keep clean. Definitely never *paint* tiles. My house was flipped and they painted the kitchen wall tiles and there are just grease and watermarks everywhere. It's impossible to clean without taking the paint off too. 😭 2. Flat bottom sink ✅ Multiple of my clients have these. The worst is a copper flat bottom sink. It's grungy FOREVER. 3. Ceiling Fans 🤨 I've not encountered a ceiling fan in a kitchen yet. But I can only *imagine * how much of a PITA it would be. Just scrubbing the flat tops of cabinets is so insanely work-intensive. When I remodel, I'd rather have cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling, even if they're empty. The face of a cabinet is easier to clean than the flat top. 4. Black countertops ✅ I agree these look sleek n classy. But unless you're committed to wiping them down every morning and night, they're going to show every crumb. I personally DO wipe my counters twice a day but my clients with black countertops, you can see everything. Dust, crumbs, grease. Speckled brown or gray are the way to go if you're not the most vigilant cleaner. They hide grime. I always fantasized about having a countertop made of the chemically inert black material used in biology and chemistry labs. It seems impervious to damage. 5. Things all over the countertops ✅ YES! My personal counters are completely bare and I can't tell you how much that alone makes them seem clean. Getting a microwave over my stove really changed everything. It helps make it so much easier to wipe down the counters at any time. I've never worked for a client with uncluttered countertops, I pray for the day. 😅 I hear about "appliance garages" a lot which I feel like could possibly split the difference between "empty counter" and "daily appliances accessibility", but have yet to experience them outside of a showroom. 6. Black cupboards ✅ Every client with black cupboards needs to have them be completely smooth/flat *with* handle hardware. I see so much dust on the ones with trim. And so many fingerprints on the ones with no hardware. I'm fastidious but I don't think I could keep up with these in my personal house. 7. Flat gold fixtures 🤷 IMHO, every shiny fixture looks grimey basically immediately. And flat black seems to hide water spots the most. Flat stainless seems OK. 8. Slate tile floors 🤔 I haven't had the displeasure of washing these in kitchens yet, only entryways. They're absolutely terrible to clean. You absolutely *must* vacuum first, then mop. They're like tiles, but the worst kind. That said, I do still like their appearance on entryways. But definitely use a welcome rug. And definitely be prepared to take time cleaning them. I feel like a smooth flat stone of some kind would be just as pretty but less headache. 9. Kitchen table with grooves ✅ FOR REAL. Add to that any surface with grooves or texture or a gap. Wood block countertops make me cringe with how gross they can get. 🎉🎉🎉 Your list is great! Well thought out. I'd add to the kitchen list: 1. Gas stoves, specifically the grates. Get electric or induction smooth top! 2. Hidden trash/recycling cans. This is a catch-22. The cabinet ones are always disgusting. People are sloppy at using them. But not everyone likes looking at their trash bins. And if they're visible, they need to be cleaned to keep up appearances. 3. Floor mounted air vents. If you're doing a remodel, go for wall mounted air vents. So much kitchen food and drinks get spilled in floor vents. 4. On the topic of vents, vents that vent outside are vastly superior to vents that filter and then recirculate inside. Less grease in the house! 5. Any appliance you can't take apart easily to clean. I've seen some offensively dirty kitchen gadgets. Toasters that don't empty, hot water pots that you can't scrub, abused waffle irons.

@@CleaningtheECway I have a small toaster oven I've tried to clean with all kinds of things with no luck. I'm at the point of getting rid of it. The outside looks good. The inside looks like a burnt mess. What can I do?

We rented a flat once with a fake slate kitchen floor, complete with ridges and uneven texture. It was awful to clean, and always looked filthy.

A TikTok cleaning hack suggested Coca-Cola for cleaning rust off of metal. I have a few rust-looking spots in the sink. Advice about rust and yes-no for coke?

If it’s surface or superficial rust you can try vinegar. Oven cleaner will probably also work but be careful with it. I’ve never had luck with soda as a cleaning product but if you try it, make sure to use diet soda. The sugar in regular soda makes it sticky if you leave it too long.

I use Bar Keepers Friend to clean rust off. Coke can cause your sink to darken, and the sugar can cause bacteria to grow. When using it to remove rust from metal, it has to soak for an entire day (24 hours).

@@WhiteVioletButterfly Thoroughly rinse the surfaces afterwards, or you'll get an even worse result. Chances are they will rust over again, so you're probably looking at replacement down the line.

Nowhere close to a puff post. These are serious warnings that any homeowner with skin in the game will want to know. The solutions are, be a grownup who does not require spoonfed pablum, do some research, watch some more videos, read your owner manuals, be a nonparasitic adult, avoid the Stupid Tax.

Black refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers are my pet peeve. You can see every fingerprint, streak or spot on them no matter how much you clean them. Also, I can’t stand single basin kitchen sinks or a sink without a sprayer.
