Really nice tutorial, thanks for this Martin.
Very cool!
Nice demonstration! Usability is simple and intuitive.
this sequencer is pure genius. endless inspiration
My challenge is the swing range of 75. My Daw swing goes up to 100. How can i get stepic to align with my DAW swing? Cant the developers increase the swing range to 100%? 25% in stepic is different from 25% in my daw due to the swing range in STEPIC
Currently, I have no plans to expand the swing range. I find the range up to 75% sufficient as it covers most use cases. Why Stepic's swing doesn't align with your DAW's swing, I can't say for sure. Could you send me a small example project so I can reproduce the behavior on my side? Then we can look into the cause and see if there's a workaround. Generally, everything is fine with Stepic's swing. For example, if you set a swing of 50%, the notes on even steps are played or swung with 50% "delay."
Looks great!
yes, this tutorial is stupit once you running an irritating sequence....how shut it down back to the BEGIN.....?? ONE OF THE BASICS AFTER ALL
basics please..........how to put to the begin / zero.............
Also add plz unselect "root chord key" for chords. I undarstand thats important. You can just paint this key, but if it unselected midi signal dont work for this note
next update add plz "1 button" add chords like 3d or 7th 9th
Great video and love your enthousiasm 😃
Hey man lots of love to you, you're one of the very few people who actually do stuff...all these people are busy in buying stuff, selling stuff etc...but this reverb, buy serum, but this gear, buy that Synth... you're one of the few guys I've seen who actually does something productive with all this gear...and teaches too....lots of love friend...
Just got into midi (gear/software) almost a month ago. Still on the uphill side of the learning curve. But this is something I'll strongly consider a bit down the road. Seems like something I can dive deeply into. Thank you
Hi there! Does Stepic work in Reason DAW aswell? Thanks in advance.
Hi, thanks for your interest in Stepic! You can't use Stepic directly/natively in Reason, but you can use it along with another VST3/AU synthesizer in a plugin chainer (like Plugin Buddy from Modalics). If this appoach suits you depends on your workflow and requirements. If you want to give it a try, send us an email, and we'll set you up with a temporary demo license. You can find the contact details on the homepage.
Es wäre toll, wenn im Arpeggiator Mode auch die Akkorde auf einzelnen Steps abgespielt werden könnten.
Wie meinst du das genau?
thanks for the vid but I (and probably others) would have benefited from a keyboard input graphic though to help understand exactly what you were doing :)
Drag and drop MIDI Export does not work with Ableton Live 11 Intro. I have the working two channel setup/
Hi, the drag & drop MIDI export should work with any version of Live. If you send us an email, we would be happy to look into the issue for you. You can find our contact details in your purchase receipt email or on the Devicemeister homepage.
I would love to have a presets section so I can build a huge library of sequences.
Sometimes wishes do come true, and Christmas isn't far off either.
@@devicemeister Sounds promising :)
Wow 🤩
Rewatching this video now and now realizing how I would use the hold feature. It’ll definitely come in handy while programming patterns. 🎹💙
hi,,,,,, buthow do i link the automation ping to some other synths where i cant find the MIDI LEARN option
Hi, which synth are you using? What does the manual say about MIDI Learn or MIDI-CC Automation in general?
@@devicemeister hi sir... I'm using MONOLIT BLEASS , CHEEZE MACHINE , and basically all the good Free synths.... But I don't have their user manuals nor I can find any MIDI learn option within the Synth interface ..... I would not like to give you a headache but if you could just give me a direction on what to search for , I would search the internet myself on How to do that .
@@saurabhsharma2572 If you can't find a manual in the plugin or on their websites, I would hit the devs with an email and ask them. It could be, that these two free devices don't have MIDI CC implementation. Here's a tip: If you haven't installed Vital by Vital Audio yet, definitely do it. It's one of the best free synthesizers and it supports MIDI CC automation and offers MIDI Learn. Which DAW are you using?
regarding the note in scale transform , its modes are either to allow any input , just notes in the scale , or change the input to nearest, but that doesn't seem to have any connection with transposition , that is if the fixed notes of the pitch sequencer doesn't change , or do they ? what would make sense to me is if the incoming note would be treated as the root note , so those pitches should change accordingly.
Hi, I'm not entirely sure I understand what you mean. However, if you set the note-in mode to "Transpose" in MIDI Play, the incoming notes effectively become the root note. For the note in scale transform (ignore offset / to nearest) to have an effect, you need to have a scale set. The determining factor for this is the Scale Keyboard in the top bar, not the pitch notes used in the sequence. You can see this in the video at 4:28.
Can you load and save patch presets in Stepic?
Currently, Stepic doesn't offer preset function. Depending on your DAW, you can use its preset feature to save and recall Stepic's state. Implementing a preset function is high on the priority list. It's quite possible that this feature will be added to Stepic soon.
@@devicemeister Thanks for the update. I'm loving Stepic in my workflow, I've tested a few MIDI sequencer/generator plugins, and Stepic is certainly the best step sequencer style plugin I've used. The workflow is very quick and intuitive and the cost is reasonable. A preset function would be an awesome addition. Mainly for backing up patches and user created preset packs. Do you have a timeframe for when a preset function will be added to Stepic?
mmm.... This is of course very good. But what and for whom is this paid plugin? BlueARP does the same thing and is absolutely free :) Anyway, thanks for the content.
I cant use this on studio one help me please 😢
Hi, please contact our support. You'll find the contact information on the Devicemeister homepage.
can you drag more than 1 pattern over to a midi clip in Ableton? If I made 4 patterns and want them to play in order inside a clip, how do I drag more than 1 pattern at a time
you can export only one pattern at a time. if you want to have multiple Stepic patterns in one clip, simply export the clips into the arrangement view and line them up back to back on the same track. Then (multi)select these clips and hit STRG+J (CMD+J on Mac). Now you have all patterns consolidated in a single clip and can move/copy it to the session view, if wanted.
@@devicemeister perfect. Thanks for the reply.
love it!
literally zero explanation of how to set it up for those of us who don't understand how to . Great "tutorial." I'm getting a refund.
Hi, we intentionally decided to focus only on Stepic's functions in the tutorial. Covering the setup for the variety of different DAWs would have made the tutorial too extensive. If you need help setting up Stepic in your DAW, feel free to send us an email. I'm sure, together we get Stepic up and running on your end. You can find our contact details on the homepage. If you're still not satisfied with Stepic, you can, of course, get your money back.
@@devicemeister It's obviously not the "ultimate stepic tutorial" then.
This sequencer on my computer does what $2k worth of modular gear does. So glad I can control my hardware synths through midi.
how to change "root octave" in "midi play" mode? i mean i use C-1 on my midipiano bute spetic start from C-0.... other plugins start at C-1
Thank you for this helpful content! Is there a guide to using Stepic's automation lanes to control external devices through MIDI OUT / Patcher in FL Studio? Having trouble getting Stepic's automation lanes to "grab" the controls for synths that FL can otherwise control through MIDI CC in the MIDI OUT plugin.
I sent you a video link via email that shows how to address external hardware with Stepic in FL Studio and get the CC automations working. If it still doesn't work after that, feel free to email me back. Then we can dive deeper into the analysis.
Thanks for a tremendously helpful and well presented video. Stepic purchase next :)
I did not get in what case to use the retrigger. Anyone can give a use example?
By using retrigger, you introduce a different (rhythmic) signature into the sequence, as the start of the section sequence is always aligned with the start of the pattern playhead. You'll only notice this effect if you've set a different sequence length in the section where you've also activated retrigger. If the pattern and the section are the same length, retrigger has no effect, as their starting points always align. Generally, it's a matter of personal taste and what fits better with your track at the moment.
@@devicemeister Thank you so much for the detailed info! Stepic and people behind it are just awesome!
Just want to add Devicemeister's excellent customer service! I accidentally bought the wrong version of Stepic when i meant to buy the ableton version. When other companies would have said "tough luck buy it again!" Stepic did a full license swap for me with no hassle. Will be paying attention to future products they put out.
Does Stepic have other play directions other than forward and random? Is it like Pandelum or backward mode?
Stepic has only one Forward and 2 Random playhead directions.
Hi…Stepic seems to be a Gem 👍 …are there different Run Modes like Reverse and Ping Pong. Thanks for answering.
Hi, Stepic has only one Forward and 2 Random playhead directions.
so cool . Wow
this just opened so many creative doors for me, thank you
with the midi mapping the sequence changes, along with playing the note / transposing that note, do you have to let go of the note before you change the sequence? As in, can I hold the note down with 1 hand and change the patterns with my other hand.
Hi, that's possible. Just make sure to use notes for pattern changes that you don't need for live playing (like transpose or the arp). That way, the two functions won't interfere with each other. I often use the lowest notes on my keyboard for pattern changes. Alternatively, you can control pattern changes via MIDI-CC. This is a good option if you have CC buttons on your master keyboard or a separate controller. Choose the option that best fits your workflow.
@@devicemeister excellent, thanks for the reply.
How does one save sequences?
Stepic doesn't have its own preset function, but you can use the preset function of your DAW to store and recall the plugin state. Most DAWs offer such a feature nowadays. However, this feature is also high on the priority list and it's quite likely that it will be integrated into Stepic in the near future.
Is there a way to vreat custom scales in stepic? Like if i wanted to use egyptian or soemthing
You can set any scale by disabling all the unwanted notes on the scale keyboard. Please feel free to check out the second part of this tutorial where we cover this topic: th-cam.com/video/UeoI-78YJ9I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nWdhfDeCI_340PaM&t=372
how u connecting external synth to stepic can u do a video
That would be hard to cover, because every DAW has a different approuch of how they connect to external hardware. However, you can get in touch with our support. Hit us with an email and let us know, which DAW you use. We'll be happy guide you through the process.
can you midi map the Hold Button and Mute Button?
Currently that's only possible with the Max for Live version of Stepic.
This is brilliant mate, thanks!
when dragging a stepic pattern from stepic into fl studio, consecutive patterns overwrite all others ie, ive stored 11 patterns as variations in stepic. drag stepic pattern 1 into fl. it works drag stepic pattern 2 from stepic - being a variation of pattern 1 - into fl. now FL pattern 1 is overwritten. ive tried making individual patterns in fl itself, then selecting a new fl pattern before dragging each stepic pattern over. so create pattern 2 in fl, then drag pattern 2 from stepic. Each still overwrites the previous patterns in FL. In you example you only drag over pattern 1 from stepic. Have you tried dragging all patterns over? Any ideas? cheers
Hi, the approach you've chosen is right for FL Studio, I think. However, you need to make sure that the piano roll of the pattern you want to export into is open. It's a quirk of FL that when you import MIDI via drag and drop, existing MIDI in the the target pattern gets overwritten. To merge multiple Stepic patterns into one FL pattern, you first need to export them into separate FL patterns and then merge the MIDI inside FL. That's the way I know, at least.
How is hive talking to stepic?
In FL Studio, you connect using the MIDI ports. Set the Out-Port on Stepic and the In-Port on your synth to the same number in the plugin settings. This allows the synth to receive MIDI from Stepic. You can also check out the routing chapter in the second part of our tutorial where we demonstrate this. th-cam.com/video/UeoI-78YJ9I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BY4RCL_fgLnD8WzP&t=197
@@devicemeister okay. I tried that several times with no success. I shall watch the video linked tomorrow and see if it shows ,e something I’m doing wrong. Thanks
@@darrenelkins5923 Check your mail inbox as well; I've sent you a PDF that guides you step by step. If it still doesn't work out, let me know. I'm confident we can figure it out together.
Can you mid map those midi play options to a macro? So you can adjust the Octave range, or the direction, in real time?
That's not possible in the current state of Stepic. However, I have ideas to extend Stepic in that direction.
🔥🔥🔥
This series of tutorials is just excellent. Thank you. However I have a question about the Chord Editor. Let's see I am in f minor and create a few chords. The green slider transpose the chords, however I am not 100% sure about this. When all green sliders are on green (F) all triads with F play ok. But when I create a C Minor chord (C Eb G) F is still active. So I hear 4 notes. I need to raise the green slider 1 step to G to create the Cm chord. When the green sliders are transposing, this is not correct for playing the Cm chord. I need to raise the slider to remove the f from the Cm chord. Although I understand that the root note is always on, but it would good that when you click the CHORD the root note will be disabled, so you can create the chords correctly, Perhaps in a next version, it would nice if the chord created will be shown. Would be a great bonus
At its core, Stepic is a monophonic step sequencer, with the pitch section serving as the reference source for note generation. Chord notes are then added to the pitch of each step. That's why the chord buttons are located directly under the pitch faders. The advantage of this method is that the intervals entered remain constant for each step and always transpose with the pitch. You can see this well when you change the pitch fader of a step where you've also entered chord notes. This way, your harmonic pattern remains intact even when make changes to the pitch sequence. To clarify from a technical perspective: Stepic stores chord information in semitone intervals relative to the pitch (e.g., -2, +3, +5), not as specific notes (C, C#, etc.).
